Mining user activity as a context source for search and retrieval
Nowadays in information retrieval it is generally accepted that if we can better
understand the context of users then this could help the search process, either at indexing time by including more metadata or at retrieval time by better modelling the user context. In this work we explore how activity recognition from tri-axial accelerometers can be employed to model a user's activity as a means of enabling context-aware information retrieval. In this paper we discuss how we can gather user activity automatically as a context source from a wearable mobile device and we evaluate the accuracy of our proposed user activity recognition algorithm. Our technique can recognise four kinds of activities which can be used to model part of an individual's current context. We discuss promising experimental results, possible approaches to improve our algorithms, and the impact of this work in modelling user context toward enhanced search and retrieval
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges

Educational use cases from a shared exploration of e-books and iPads
E-books and e-book readers are becoming increasingly widely available, particularly for the general reader, and there have been many studies on their adoption. However, less is known about their use for educational and academic purposes. We report here on work carried out on e-books and e-book applications using iPads by academic and teaching staff. After considering pedagogical issues and reporting survey results, we identify a spiral of six key use case areas for e-books. This spiral of use cases moves from basic e-book use, through situational reading, e-books and learning, using multiple learning resources, collaborative/group learning, to e-book production. We discuss each of these use case areas and provide guidelines that will be of interest to practitioners and researchers alike
Usability Enhancement of SMS Interface for Illiterate Users
This article analyzes several User Interface (UI) designs and puts forward some more general design principles for interfaces designed for low-literate users. The results of this study highlight the importance of text-free interfaces compared to text-based interfaces for the illiterate and low-literate population. The study developed a Short Message Service (SMS) interface consisting of many design elements, including graphical icons, voice, and text reduction. The participants were more satisfied with the designed SMS interface as compared to the traditional text-based interface of SMS. We believe that if the user interface is appropriately designed, users will not need formal literacy, computer skills, or any external help to operate the application. It has been shown that an interface with minimal or no text but one or more graphics, audio, and digital components is helpful for users with low literacy rates

CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
The use of microblogging for field-based scientific research
Documenting the context in which data are collected is an integral part of
the scientific research lifecycle. In field-based research, contextual
information provides a detailed description of scientific practices and thus
enables data interpretation and reuse. For field data, losing contextual
information often means losing the data altogether. Yet, documenting the
context of distributed, collaborative, field-based research can be a
significant challenge due to the unpredictable nature of real-world settings
and to the high degree of variability in data collection methods and scientific
practices of different researchers. In this article, we propose the use of
microblogging as a mechanism to support collection, ingestion, and publication
of contextual information about the variegated digital artifacts that are
produced in field research. We perform interviews with scholars involved in
field-based environmental and urban sensing research, to determine the extent
of adoption of Twitter and similar microblogging platforms and their potential
use for field-specific research applications. Based on the results of these
interviews as well as participant observation of field activities, we present
the design, development, and pilot evaluation of a microblogging application
integrated with an existing data collection platform on a handheld device. We
investigate whether microblogging accommodates the variable and unpredictable
nature of highly mobile research and whether it represents a suitable mechanism
to document the context of field research data early in the scientific
