    Unmanned Ground Vehicle navigation and coverage hole patching in Wireless Sensor Networks

    This dissertation presents a study of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) navigation and coverage hole patching in coordinate-free and localization-free Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Navigation and coverage maintenance are related problems since coverage hole patching requires effective navigation in the sensor network environment. A coordinate-free and localization-free WSN that is deployed in an ad-hoc fashion and does not assume the availability of GPS information is considered. The system considered is decentralized and can be self-organized in an event-driven manner where no central controller or global map is required. A single-UGV, single-destination navigation problem is addressed first. The UGV is equipped with a set of wireless listeners that determine the slope of a navigation potential field generated by the wireless sensor and actuator network. The navigation algorithm consists of sensor node level-number assignment that is determined based on a hop-distance from the network destination node and UGV navigation through the potential field created by triplets of actuators in the network. A multi-UGV, multi-destination navigation problem requires a path-planning and task allocation process. UGVs inform the network about their proposed destinations, and the network provides feedback if conflicts are found. Sensor nodes store, share, and communicate to UGVs in order to allocate the navigation tasks. A special case of a single-UGV, multi-destination navigation problem that is equivalent to the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem is discussed. The coverage hole patching process starts after a UGV reaches the hole boundary. For each hole boundary edge, a new node is added along its perpendicular bisector, and the entire hole is patched by adding nodes around the hole boundary edges. The communication complexity and present simulation examples and experimental results are analyzed. Then, a Java-based simulation testbed that is capable of simulating both the centralized and distributed sensor and actuator network algorithms is developed. The laboratory experiment demonstrates the navigation algorithm (single-UGV, single-destination) using Cricket wireless sensors and an actuator network and Pioneer 3-DX robot

    Unmanned Ground Robots for Rescue Tasks

    This chapter describes two unmanned ground vehicles that can help search and rescue teams in their difficult, but life-saving tasks. These robotic assets have been developed within the framework of the European project ICARUS. The large unmanned ground vehicle is intended to be a mobile base station. It is equipped with a powerful manipulator arm and can be used for debris removal, shoring operations, and remote structural operations (cutting, welding, hammering, etc.) on very rough terrain. The smaller unmanned ground vehicle is also equipped with an array of sensors, enabling it to search for victims inside semi-destroyed buildings. Working together with each other and the human search and rescue workers, these robotic assets form a powerful team, increasing the effectiveness of search and rescue operations, as proven by operational validation tests in collaboration with end users

    The Impact of Telemetry Received Signal Strength of IMU/GNSS Data Transmission on Autonomous Vehicle Navigation

    This paper presents the effect of received signal strength on IMU/GNSS sensor data transmission for autonomous vehicle navigation. A pixhawk 2.1 flight controller is used to build the navigation system. Straight lines with back-and-forth routes were tested using two types of SiK telemetry: Holybro and RFD. The results of the tests show that when the RSSI value falls close to the receiver's sensitivity value, the readings of the gyro sensor data, accelerometer, magnetometer, and GNSS compass data are disturbed. When the RSSI signal collides with noise, the radio telemetry link is lost, affecting the accuracy of speed data and the orientation of autonomous vehicles. According to Cisco's conversion table, the highest RSSI on Holybro telemetry is -48 dBm, and the lowest is -103 dBm, with a receiver sensitivity of -117 and data reading at a distance of about 427 meters. While the highest RSSI value on RFD telemetry is -17 dBm and the lowest is -113 dBm, even the lowest value is above the receiver's sensitivity limit of -121 dBm with data readings at a distance of approximately 749.4 meters. RFD outperforms Holybro in terms of RSSI and sensitivity at low data rates. When reading distance data to reference distance data using Google Earth and ArcGIS, RFD telemetry has a higher accuracy, with an average accuracy of 98.8%

    Event and Time-Triggered Control Module Layers for Individual Robot Control Architectures of Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicles

    Automation in the agriculture sector has increased to an extent where the accompanying methods for unmanned field management are becoming more economically viable. This manifests in the industry’s recent presentation of conceptual cab-less machines that perform all field operations under the high-level task control of a single remote operator. A dramatic change in the overall workflow for field tasks that historically assumed the presence of a human in the immediate vicinity of the work is predicted. This shift in the entire approach to farm machinery work provides producers increased control and productivity over high-level tasks and less distraction from operating individual machine actuators and implements. The final implication is decreased mechanical complexity of the cab-less field machines from their manned counter types. An Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicle (UAGV) electric platform received a portable control module layer (CML) which was modular and able to accept higher-level mission commands while returning system states to high-level tasks. The simplicity of this system was shown by its entire implementation running on microcontrollers networked on a Time-Triggered Controller Area Network (TTCAN) bus. A basic form of user input and output was added to the system to demonstrate a simple instance of sub-system integration. In this work, all major levels of design and implementation are examined in detail, revealing the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of each subsystem. System design philosophy is highlighted from the beginning. A state-space feedback steering controller was implemented on the machine utilizing a basic steering model found in literature. Finally, system performance is evaluated from the perspectives of a number of disciplines including: embedded systems software design, control systems, and robot control architecture. Recommendations for formalized UAGV system modeling, estimation, and control are discussed for the continuation of research in simplified low-cost machines for in-field task automation. Additional recommendations for future time-triggered CML experiments in bus robustness and redundancy are discussed. The work presented is foundational in the shift from event-triggered communications towards time-triggered CMLs for unmanned agricultural machinery and is a front-to-back demonstration of time-triggered design.
