    Minutes of the CD-ROM Workshop

    The workshop described in this document had two goals: (1) to establish guidelines for the CD-ROM as a tool to distribute datasets; and (2) to evaluate current scientific CD-ROM projects as an archive. Workshop attendees were urged to coordinate with European groups to develop CD-ROM, which is already available at low cost in the U.S., as a distribution medium for astronomical datasets. It was noted that NASA has made the CD Publisher at the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) available to the scientific community when the Publisher is not needed for NASA work. NSSDC's goal is to provide the Publisher's user with the hardware and software tools needed to design a user's dataset for distribution. This includes producing a master CD and copies. The prerequisite premastering process is described, as well as guidelines for CD-ROM construction. The production of discs was evaluated. CD-ROM projects, guidelines, and problems of the technology were discussed

    Electric Propulsion Interplanetary Missions using Libration Points: Development of analytic approaches and mission design

    In this dissertation, the advantageous combination of Dynamical Systems Theory of three-body models with Electric Propulsion to design novel spacecraft interplanetary missions in multi-body regimes has been investigated. Particular attention has been focused on interplanetary transfers towards outer planets that are intrinsically associated with long transfer times and high DV budgets, especially if a final planetary capture is desired. A reference mission using Electric Propulsion in the three-body model has been selected in which, after the interplanetary phase, a planetary tour of the Uranian system orbiting consecutively Oberon, Titania, Umbriel, Ariel and Miranda has been designed. Application of low-thrust propulsion with its advantages with respect to propellant requirements has been used to interconnect ballistic trajectories on invariant manifolds associated with multiple three body systems. This has implied the necessity to investigate both in the field of the Dynamical Systems Theory applied to the Circular Restricted Three-Body problem and in the field of optimal control theory as optimization schemes have been necessary to design low-thrust arcs subjected to boundary constraints. Both the interplanetary trajectory and the planetary tour have been computed in different three-body environments, where the start of the interplanetary phase has been assisted by a high energy launch to limit the transfer time. Based on the reference mission, a preliminary spacecraft configuration has been developed in which Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators have been considered to provide the necessary power source

    An investigation of grammar design in natural-language speech-recognition.

    With the growing interest and demand for human-machine interaction, much work concerning speech-recognition has been carried out over the past three decades. Although a variety of approaches have been proposed to address speech-recognition issues, such as stochastic (statistical) techniques, grammar-based techniques, techniques integrated with linguistic features, and other approaches, recognition accuracy and robustness remain among the major problems that need to be addressed. At the state of the art, most commercial speech products are constructed using grammar-based speech-recognition technology. In this thesis, we investigate a number of features involved in grammar design in natural-language speech-recognition technology. We hypothesize that: with the same domain, a semantic grammar, which directly encodes some semantic constraints into the recognition grammar, achieves better accuracy, but less robustness; a syntactic grammar defines a language with a larger size, thereby it has better robustness, but less accuracy; a word-sequence grammar, which includes neither semantics nor syntax, defines the largest language, therefore, is the most robust, but has very poor recognition accuracy. In this Master\u27s thesis, we claim that proper grammar design can achieve the appropriate compromise between recognition accuracy and robustness. The thesis has been proven by experiments using the IBM Voice-Server SDK, which consists of a VoiceXML browser, IBM ViaVoice Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech (TTS) engines, sample applications, and other tools for developing and testing VoiceXML applications. The experimental grammars are written in the Java Speech Grammar Format (JSGF), and the testing applications are written in VoiceXML. The tentative experimental results suggest that grammar design is a good area for further study.     An investigation of the electrolytic plasma oxidation process for corrosion protection of pure magnesium and magnesium alloy AM50.

    In this study, silicate and phosphate EPO coatings were produced on pure magnesium using an AC power source. It was found that the silicate coatings possess good wear resistance, while the phosphate coatings provide better corrosion protection. A Design of Experiment (DOE) technique, the Taguchi method, was used to systematically investigate the effect of the EPO process parameters on the corrosion protection properties of a coated magnesium alloy AM50 using a DC power. The experimental design consisted of four factors (treatment time, current density, and KOH and NaAlO2 concentrations), with three levels of each factor. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements were conducted to determine the corrosion resistance of the coated samples. The optimized processing parameters are 12 minutes, 12 mA/cm2 current density, 0.9 g/l KOH, 15.0 g/l NaAlO2. The results of the percentage contribution of each factor determined by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) imply that the KOH concentration is the most significant factor affecting the corrosion resistance of the coatings, while treatment time is a major factor affecting the thickness of the coatings.     1998 NASA-ASEE-Stanford Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

    This report presents the essential features and highlights of the 1998 Summer Faculty Fellowship Program at Ames Research Center and Dryden Flight Research Center in a comprehensive and concise form. Summary reports describing the fellows' technical accomplishments are enclosed in the attached technical report. The proposal for the 1999 NASA-ASEE-Stanford Summer Faculty Fellowship Program is being submitted under separate cover. Of the 31 participating fellows, 27 were at Ames and 4 were at Dryden. The Program's central feature is the active participation by each fellow in one of the key technical activities currently under way at either the NASA Ames Research Center or the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. The research topic is carefully chosen in advance to satisfy the criteria of: (1) importance to NASA, (2) high technical level, and (3) a good match to the interests, ability, and experience of the fellow, with the implied possibility of NASA-supported follow-on work at the fellow's home institution. Other features of the Summer Faculty Fellowship Program include participation by the fellows in workshops and seminars at Stanford, the Ames Research Center, and other off-site locations. These enrichment programs take place either directly or remotely, via the Stanford Center for Professional Development, and also involve specific interactions between fellows and Stanford faculty on technical and other academic subjects. A few, brief remarks are in order to summarize the fellows' opinions of the summer program. It is noteworthy that 90% of the fellows gave the NASA-Ames/Dryden- Stanford program an "excellent" rating and the remaining 10%, "good." Also, 100% would recommend the program to their colleagues as an effective means of furthering their professional development as teachers and researchers. Last, but not least, 87% of the fellows stated that a continuing research relationship with their NASA colleagues' organization probably would be maintained. Therefore, the NASA-ASEE- Ames/Dryden-Stanford Program has met its goals very well and every effort will be made to continue to do so in the future

    Analysis and Design of Speech-Recognition Grammars

    Currently, most commercial speech-enabled products are constructed using grammar-based technology. Grammar design is a critical issue for good recognition accuracy. Two methods are commonly used for creating grammars: 1) to generate them automatically from a large corpus of input data which is very costly to acquire, or 2) to construct them using an iterative process involving manual design, followed by testing with end-user speech input. This is a time-consuming and very expensive process requiring expert knowledge of language design, as well as the application area. Another hurdle to the creation and use of speech-enabled applications is that expertise is also required to integrate the speech capability with the application code and to deploy the application for wide-scale use. An alternative approach, which we propose, is 1) to construct them using the iterative process described above, but to replace end-user testing by analysis of the recognition grammars using a set of grammar metrics which have been shown to be good indicators of recognition accuracy, 2) to improve recognition accuracy in the design process by encoding semantic constraints in the syntax rules of the grammar, 3) to augment the above process by generating recognition grammars automatically from specifications of the application, and 4) to use tools for creating speech-enabled applications together with an architecture for their deployment which enables expert users, as well as users who do not have expertise in language processing, to easily build speech applications and add them to the web

    Executable Attribute Grammars for Modular and Efficient Natural Language Processing

    Language-processors that are constructed using top-down recursive-descent with backtracking parsing are highly modular, and are easy to implement and maintain. However, a widely-held inaccurate view is that top-down processors are inherently exponential for ambiguous grammars and cannot accommodate left-recursive syntax rules. It has been known that exponential time and space complexities can be avoided by memoization and compact graph-structured representation, and that left- recursive productions can be accommodated through a variety of techniques. However, until now, memoization, compact representation, and techniques for handling left-recursion have either been presented independently, or else attempts at their integration have compromised modularity and correctness of the resulting parses. Specifying syntax and semantics to describe formal languages using denotational notation of attribute grammars (AGs) has been widely practiced. However, very little work has shown the usefulness of declarative AGs for constructing computational models of natural language. Previous top-down approaches fall short in accommodating ambiguous and general CFGs with arbitrary semantics in one pass as executable specifications. Existing approaches lack in providing a declarative syntax-semantics interface that can take full advantages of dependencies between attributes of syntactic constituents to model linguistically-motivated cases. This thesis solves these shortcomings by proposing a new modular top-down syntactic and semantic analysis system, which is efficient and accommodates all forms of CFGs. Moreover, this system provides notation to declaratively specify semantics by establishing arbitrary dependencies between attributes of syntactic categories to perform linguistically-motivated tasks such as: building directly-executable natural-language query processors, computing meanings of sentences using compositional semantics, performing contextual disambiguation tasks, modelling restrictive classes of languages etc

    McIDAS-eXplorer: A version of McIDAS for planetary applications

    McIDAS-eXplorer is a set of software tools developed for analysis of planetary data published by the Planetary Data System on CD-ROM's. It is built upon McIDAS-X, an environment which has been in use nearly two decades now for earth weather satellite data applications in research and routine operations. The environment allows convenient access, navigation, analysis, display, and animation of planetary data by utilizing the full calibration data accompanying the planetary data. Support currently exists for Voyager images of the giant planets and their satellites; Magellan radar images (F-MIDR and C-MIDR's, global map products (GxDR's), and altimetry data (ARCDR's)); Galileo SSI images of the earth, moon, and Venus; Viking Mars images and MDIM's as well as most earth based telescopic images of solar system objects (FITS). The NAIF/JPL SPICE kernels are used for image navigation when available. For data without the SPICE kernels (such as the bulk of the Voyager Jupiter and Saturn imagery and Pioneer Orbiter images of Venus), tools based on NAIF toolkit allow the user to navigate the images interactively. Multiple navigation types can be attached to a given image (e.g., for ring navigation and planet navigation in the same image). Tools are available to perform common image processing tasks such as digital filtering, cartographic mapping, map overlays, and data extraction. It is also possible to have different planetary radii for an object such as Venus which requires a different radius for the surface and for the cloud level. A graphical user interface based on Tel-Tk scripting language is provided (UNIX only at present) for using the environment and also to provide on-line help. It is possible for end users to add applications of their own to the environment at any time
