    The Development of an Automated Testing Framework for Data-Driven Testing Utilizing the UML Testing Profile

    The development of increasingly-complex Web 2.0 applications, along with a rise in end-user expectations, have not only made the testing and quality assurance processes of web application development an increasingly-important part of the SDLC, but have also made these processes more complex and resource-intensive. One way to effectively test these applications is by implementing an automated testing solution along with manual testing, as automation solutions have been shown to increase the total amount of testing that can be performed, and help testing team achieve consistency in their testing efforts. The difficulty, though, lies in how to best go about developing such a solution. The use of a framework is shown to help, by decreasing the amount of duplicate code and maintenance required, and increasing the amount of separation among the various elements of the testing solution. This research examines the use of the UML Testing Profile (UTP), including the use of UML diagrams, in the creation of such a framework. Using an Action Design Research methodology, a framework is developed for an automated testing solution that utilizes the Selenium Webdriver with a data-driven methodology, used in an organizational context, and evaluated, over the course of multiple iterations. Design principles, including the use of a test architecture and test context, the use of UML diagrams for the creation of Page Objects, and the identification and implementation of workflows are distilled from these iterations, and their impact on the larger context, the delivery of a robust application that meets end-user expectations, is examined

    Automated Functional Testing based on the Navigation of Web Applications

    Web applications are becoming more and more complex. Testing such applications is an intricate hard and time-consuming activity. Therefore, testing is often poorly performed or skipped by practitioners. Test automation can help to avoid this situation. Hence, this paper presents a novel approach to perform automated software testing for web applications based on its navigation. On the one hand, web navigation is the process of traversing a web application using a browser. On the other hand, functional requirements are actions that an application must do. Therefore, the evaluation of the correct navigation of web applications results in the assessment of the specified functional requirements. The proposed method to perform the automation is done in four levels: test case generation, test data derivation, test case execution, and test case reporting. This method is driven by three kinds of inputs: i) UML models; ii) Selenium scripts; iii) XML files. We have implemented our approach in an open-source testing framework named Automatic Testing Platform. The validation of this work has been carried out by means of a case study, in which the target is a real invoice management system developed using a model-driven approach.Comment: In Proceedings WWV 2011, arXiv:1108.208

    A methodological proposal and tool support for the HL7 standards compliance in the development of health information systems

    Health information systems are increasingly complex, and their development is presented as a challenge for software development companies offering quality, maintainable and interoperable products. HL7 (Health level 7) International, an international non-profit organization, defines and maintains standards related to health information systems. However, the modelling languages proposed by HL7 are far removed from standard languages and widely known by software engineers. In these lines, NDT is a software development methodology that has a support tool called NDT-Suite and is based, on the one hand, on the paradigm of model-driven engineering and, on the other hand, in UML that is a widely recognized standard language. This paper proposes an extension of the NDT methodology called MoDHE (Model Driven Health Engineering) to offer software engineers a methodology capable of modelling health information systems conforming to HL7 using UML domain models

    Modelado y derivación automática de código para pruebas de software

    El Perfil de Pruebas UML (en inglés UML 2.0 Testing Profile, U2TP) permite especificar y modelar dominios de pruebas posibilitando además derivar dichos modelos a código ejecutable en forma automática. En este artículo presentamos una propuesta para automatizar las transformaciones de modelos de pruebas estructurales y de comportamiento a código JUnit dentro del contexto de Pruebas de software Dirigidas por Modelos (en inglés ModelDriven Testing, MDT). Para lograrlo, extendemos el metamodelo UML 2 para definir un lenguaje de modelado para dominios de prueba. Este lenguaje permite agregar anotaciones sobre los diagramas UML con información adicional que luego es utilizada para generar los casos de pruebas correspondiente. Además, presentamos las reglas formales de transformación de modelos U2TP a código de pruebas JUnit.     Distribution pattern-driven development of service architectures

    Distributed systems are being constructed by composing a number of discrete components. This practice is particularly prevalent within the Web service domain in the form of service process orchestration and choreography. Often, enterprise systems are built from many existing discrete applications such as legacy applications exposed using Web service interfaces. There are a number of architectural configurations or distribution patterns, which express how a composed system is to be deployed in a distributed environment. However, the amount of code required to realise these distribution patterns is considerable. In this paper, we propose a distribution pattern-driven approach to service composition and architecting. We develop, based on a catalog of patterns, a UML-compliant framework, which takes existing Web service interfaces as its input and generates executable Web service compositions based on a distribution pattern chosen by the software architect

    Costs and benefits of multiple levels of models in MDA development

    In Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) development, models of a distributed application are carefully defined so as to remain stable in face of changes in technology platforms. As we have argued previously in [1, 3], models in MDA can be organized into different levels of platformindependence. In this paper, we analyze the costs and benefits of maintaining separate levels of models with transformations between these levels. We argue that the number of levels of models and the degree of automation of transformations between these levels depend on a number of design goals to be balanced, including those of maximizing the efficiency of the design process and maximizing the reusability of models and transformations

    A subset of precise UML for Model-based Testing

    This paper presents an original model-based testing approach that takes a UML behavioural view of the system under test and automatically generates test cases and executable test scripts according to model coverage criteria. This approach is embedded in the LEIRIOS Test Designer tool and is currently deployed in domains such as Enterprise IT and electronic transaction applications. This model-based testing approach makes it possible to automatically produce the traceability matrix from requirements to test cases as part of the test generation process. This paper defines the subset of UML used for model-based testing and illustrates it using a small example

    Metamodel-based model conformance and multiview consistency checking

    Model-driven development, using languages such as UML and BON, often makes use of multiple diagrams (e.g., class and sequence diagrams) when modeling systems. These diagrams, presenting different views of a system of interest, may be inconsistent. A metamodel provides a unifying framework in which to ensure and check consistency, while at the same time providing the means to distinguish between valid and invalid models, that is, conformance. Two formal specifications of the metamodel for an object-oriented modeling language are presented, and it is shown how to use these specifications for model conformance and multiview consistency checking. Comparisons are made in terms of completeness and the level of automation each provide for checking multiview consistency and model conformance. The lessons learned from applying formal techniques to the problems of metamodeling, model conformance, and multiview consistency checking are summarized
