Implementation of Video Compression Standards in Digital Television

    Get PDF
In this paper, a video compression standard used in digital television systems is discussed. Basic concepts of video compression and principles of lossy and lossless compression are given. Techniques of video compression (intraframe and interframe compression), the type of frames and principles of the bit rate compression are discussed. Characteristics of standard-definition television (SDTV), high-definition television (HDTV) and ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) are given. The principles of the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression standards are analyzed. Overview of basic standards of video compression and the impact of compression on the quality of TV images and the number of TV channels in the multiplexes of terrestrial and satellite digital TV transmission are shown. Adaptive Quantisation in HEVC for Contouring Artefacts Removal in UHD Content

    Get PDF
Contouring artefacts affect the visual experience of some particular types of compressed Ultra High Definition (UHD) sequences characterised by smoothly textured areas and gradual transitions in the value of the pixels. This paper proposes a technique to adjust the quantisation process at the encoder so that contouring artefacts are avoided. The devised method does not require any change at the decoder side and introduces a negligible coding rate increment (up to 3.4% for the same objective quality). This result compares favourably with the average 11.2% bit-rate penalty introduced by a method where the quantisation step is reduced in contour-prone areas

Quality of Experience in UHD-1 Phase 2 television: the contribution of UHD+ HFR technology

A key factor to determine the quality of experience (QoE) of a video is its capability to convey the large spectrum of perceptual phenomena that our eyes can sense in real life. In order to meet this demand, the recent DVB UHD-1 Phase 2 specification employs new video features, such as higher spatial resolutions (4K/8K) and High Frame Rate (HFR). The first enables larger field of view and level of details, while the second offers sharper images of moving objects going well beyond the current frame rates. While the contribution of each of these technologies to QoE has been investigated individually, in this paper we are interested to study their interaction, and in quantifying the benefits to users from their combination. To this end, we conduct a subjective test on compressed UHD+HFR content on a recent display capable of reproducing 100 pictures per second at 2160p resolution, with the goal to assess the increase in QoE of UHD and HFR with respect to conventional video, both individually and in combination. The results indicate that for content with fast motion, at higher bitrates the combination of UHD and HFR significantly improves the QoE compared to that obtained when these features are used individually

Investigating the interaction between positions and signals of height-channel loudspeakers in reproducing immersive 3d sound

Since transmission capacities have significantly increased over the past few years, researchers are now able to transmit a larger amount of data, namely multichannel audio content, in the consumer applications. What has not been investigated in a systematic way yet is how to deliver the multichannel content. Specifically, researchers\u27 attention is focused on the quest of a standardized immersive reproduction format that incorporates height loudspeakers coupled with the new high-resolution and three-dimensional (3D) media content for a comprehensive 3D experience. To better understand and utilize the immersive audio reproduction, this research focused on the (1) interaction between the positioning of height loudspeakers and the signals fed to the loudspeakers, (2) investigation of the perceptual characteristics associated with the height ambiences, and (3) the influence of inverse filtering on perceived sound quality for the realistic 3D sound reproduction. The experiment utilized the existence of two layers of loudspeakers: horizontal layer following the ITU-R BS.775 five-channel loudspeaker configuration and height layer locating a total of twelve loudspeakers at the azimuth of ±30°, ±50°, ±70°, ±90°, ±110° and ±130° and elevation of 30°. Eight configurations were formed, each of which selected four height-loudspeakers from twelve. In the subjective evaluation, listeners compared, ranked and described the eight randomly presented configurations of 4-channel height ambiences. The stimuli for the experiment were four nine-channel (5 channels for the horizontal and 4 for the height loudspeakers) multichannel music. Moreover, an approach of Finite Impulse Response (FIR) inverse filtering was attempted, in order to remove the particular room\u27s acoustic influence. Another set of trained professionals was informally asked to use descriptors to characterize the newly presented multichannel music with height ambiences rendered with inverse filtering. The experimental results indicate the significance of the positioning of the loudspeakers with respect to the signals being fed to those loudspeakers in delivering a 3D sound field. Furthermore, it has been revealed that the perceptual characteristics that listeners linked for multichannel music with height ambiences include envelopment, elevated-ness and fullness. Last but not least, after applying the inverse filtering the subjective preference was not affected significantly. This allows for the author to believe that, in fact, the room\u27s influence with respect to the subjective evaluation is not as important as the appropriate loudspeaker-positioning for the multichannel-reproduced music with height ambiences

Aiming at the conflict circumstances of multi-parameter H.265/HEVC encoder system, the present paper introduces the analysis of many optimizations\u27 set in order to improve the trade-off between quality, performance and power consumption for different reliable and accurate applications. This method is based on the Pareto optimization and has been tested with different resolutions on real-time encoders
