    An integrated mathematical model of crew scheduling

    In conditions of air transport companies, the process of planning flight schedules is one of the most important processes each airline has to deal with. The flight schedule planning process consists of several consecutive plans. The first step of the planning process is defining which air routes will be operated, the decision is based on the business plan of the air transport company. Consequently, suitable airplanes have to be assigned to the individual air routes. And finally, on the basis of the pre-vious steps shifts of pilots can be planned, the shifts are usually planned one month in advance. However, with no respect to the created plan some unexpected disruptions of the flying staff, especially of the pilots, may happen in practice due to many reasons. In such cases the original plan has to be modified in order to react to the disruptions. The modifications can represent an optimisation problem – the air transport company has a set of the pilots and on the basis of their qualification and experience the company has to create new aircrews. The pilots can be found in different localities that are different from the airports of the planned flight departures. That means the newly planned aircrews are assigned to the individual flights with respect to costs associated with transportation of the aircrews to the airports of their departure. The problem can be solved by many approaches. One of the possible approaches is a heuristic approach which is based on sequential solving two linear mathematical models. The first model decides about the aircrews (matches the pilots with respect to their compatibility). The second model solves the assignment problem – the air-crews are matched with the individual flights. The article presents an integrated linear model which deals with both problems at the same time.V podmínkách leteckých dopravců je hlavním výsledkem plánovacího procesu letový řád. Samotná tvorba letového řádu je posloupností několika na sebe navazujících dílčích plánů. Prvním krokem v procesu plánování je naplánování linek podle obchodního záměru dopravce, následně se naplánovaným letům přidělí konkrétní typ letadla. Zpravidla s měsíčním předstihem je nutné vytvořit plán práce pro posádky pilotů, kteří budou letouny obsluhovat. Bez ohledu na vytvořený plán práce posádek však může dojít k neočekávaným výpadkům personálu. Potom je nutné operativně upravit připravený plán a posádky přeplánovat. Jedná se tedy o optimalizační problém, kdy dopravce má k dispozici množinu pilotů, z nichž je nutné na základě jejich kvalifikace a zkušeností vytvořit nové posádky. Piloti se mohou nacházet v různých destinacích, které mohou být různé od letišť odletů. Nově vytvořené posádky jsou potom přidělovány konkrétním letadlům v závislosti na velikosti nákladů spojených s přepravou posádek k letadlům. Uvedený problém lze řešit různými způsoby. První způsob je heuristický založený na postupném řešení dvou lineárních modelů. V prvním modelu se rozhoduje o vytvoření posádek. Druhý model vytvořené posádky přiděluje letadlům.     A simple and effective algorithm for the maximum happy vertices problem

    In a recent paper, a solution approach to the Maximum Happy Vertices Problem has been proposed. The approach is based on a constructive heuristic improved by a matheuristic local search phase. We propose a new procedure able to outperform the previous solution algorithm both in terms of solution quality and computational time. Our approach is based on simple ingredients implying as starting solution gen- erator an approximation algorithm and as an improving phase a new matheuristic local search. The procedure is then extended to a multi-start configuration, able to further improve the solution quality at the cost of an acceptable increase in compu- tational time

    Fairness aspects in personnel scheduling

    In industries like health care, public transport or call centers a shift-based system ensures permanent availability of employees for covering needed services. The resource allocation problem – assigning employees to shifts – is known as personnel scheduling in literature and often aims at minimizing staffing costs. Working in shifts, though, impacts employees’ private lives which adds to the problem of increasing staff shortage in recent years. Therefore, more and more effort is spent on incorporating fairness into scheduling approaches in order to increase employees’ satisfaction. This paper presents a literature review of approaches for personnel scheduling considering fairness aspects. Since fairness is not a quantitative objective, but can be evaluated from different point of views, a large number of fairness measurements exists in the literature. Furthermore, perspective (group vs individual fairness) or time horizon (short-term vs long-term fairness) are often considered very differently. To conclude, we show that a uniform definition and approach for considering fairness in personnel scheduling is challenging and point out gaps for future research

    Metaheuristics For Solving Real World Employee Rostering and Shift Scheduling Problems

    Optimising resources and making considerate decisions are central concerns in any responsible organisation aiming to succeed in efficiently achieving their goals. Careful use of resources can have positive outcomes in the form of fiscal savings, improved service levels, better quality products, improved awareness of diminishing returns and general output efficiency, regardless of field. Operational research techniques are advanced analytical tools used to improve managerial decision-making. There have been a variety of case studies where operational research techniques have been successfully applied to save millions of pounds. Operational research techniques have been successfully applied to a multitude of fields, including agriculture, policing, defence, conservation, air traffic control, and many more. In particular, management of resources in the form of employees is a challenging problem --- but one with the potential for huge improvements in efficiency. The problem this thesis tackles can be divided into two sub-problems; the personalised shift scheduling & employee rostering problem, and the roster pattern problem. The personalised shift scheduling & employee rostering problem involves the direct scheduling of employees to hours and days of week. This allows the creation of schedules which are tailored to individuals and allows a fine level over control over the results, but with at the cost of a large and challenging search space. The roster pattern problem instead takes existing patterns employees currently work, and uses these as a pool of potential schedules to be used. This reduces the search space but minimises the number of changes to existing employee schedules, which is preferable for personnel satisfaction. Existing research has shown that a variety of algorithms suit different problems and hybrid methods are found to typically outperform standalone ones in real-world contexts. Several algorithmic approaches for solving variations of the employee scheduling problem are considered in this thesis. Initially a VNS approach was used with a Metropolis-Hastings acceptance criterion. The second approach utilises ER&SR controlled by the EMCAC, which has only been used in the field of exam timetabling, and has not before been used within the domain of employee scheduling and rostering. ER&SR was then hybridised with our initial approach, producing ER&SR with VNS. Finally, ER&SR was hybridised into a matheuristic with Integer Programming and compared to the hybrid's individual components. A contribution of this thesis is evidence that the algorithm ER&SR has merit outside of the original sub-field of exam scheduling, and can be applied to shift scheduling and employee rostering. Further, ER&SR was hybridised and schedules produced by the hybridisations were found to be of higher quality than the standalone algorithm. In the literature review it was found that hybrid algorithms have become more popular in real-world problems in recent years, and this body of work has explored and continued this trend. Problem formulations in this thesis provide insight into creating constraints which satisfy the need for minimising employee dissatisfaction, particularly in regards to abrupt change. The research presented in this thesis has positively impacted a multinational and multibillion dollar field service operations company. This has been achieved by implementing a variety of techniques, including metaheuristics and a matheuristic, to schedule shifts and roster employees over a period of several months. This thesis showcases the research outputs by this project, and highlights the real-world impact of this research

    Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes

    Determination of effective investment strategies for the airline sector in the context of sustainable economic development

    Bu çalışmanın amacı sürdürülebilir ekonomik kalkınma bağlamında havayolu sektörüne yönelik müşteri memnuniyeti bazlı yatırım stratejilerinin belirlenmesidir. Bu amaca yönelik olarak, havacılık sektöründe müşterilerin taleplerini etkileyen faktörlerin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, 2019 yılında en iyi 75 havayolu şirketi arasına giren şirketler inceleme kapsamına alınmıştır. Bahsi geçen şirketlere yönelik 2011-2020 yılları arasında Skytrax web sitesinden yapılan yorumlar analiz edilmiştir. İlgili müşteri yorumları metin madenciliği yöntemiyle KNIME platformu üzerinde analiz edilmiştir. Bu kapsamda, en fazla geçen tek, ikili ve üçlü kelime grupları belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen analiz sonuçlarına göre, müşterilerin tüm havayolu şirketlerinden genel beklentileri sunulan hizmetin kaliteli olmasıdır. Koltuk rahatlığı, kabin ekibinin kibar ve yardımsever olması ve yemeklerin lezzetli olması gibi hususlar tüm ülkeler için ön plana çıkmıştır. Belirtilen hususlara ek olarak, müşteriler havayolu şirketlerinden genel olarak meydana gelen rötarlara ilişkin şikayetlerde bulunmaktadır. Dolayısıyla, bu problemi yaşayan havayolu şirketlerinin gerekli tedbirleri almadığı durumda diğerlerine kıyasla önemli ölçüde rekabet avantajı kaybedecekleri ortadadır. Öte yandan, Afrika, Kuzey Amerika ve Güney Amerika’lı müşterilerin uçaklardaki temizliğe daha fazla önem gösterdiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Son olarak, Güney Amerika’lı müşterilerin fiyatların yüksek olmasına yönelik bazı rahatsızlıkları bulunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu bilgiler göz önünde bulundurularak, özellikle bu kıtaya hizmet veren havayolu şirketlerinin düşük fiyat odaklı yatırım stratejisini belirlemeleri yerinde olacaktır. Belirtilen bu öneriler ülkelerin sürdürülebilir kalkınma hedeflerine ulaşabilmelerine yardımcı olacaktır.The aim of this study is to determine customer satisfaction-based investment strategies for the airline industry to achieve sustainable economic development. For this purpose, it is intended to determine the factors affecting the demands of customers in the aviation industry. In this context, the companies that are among the top 75 airline companies in 2019 are included in the review. The comments made on the Skytrax website between the years 2011- 2020 for the aforementioned companies are analyzed. Relevant customer comments are evaluated on the KNIME platform by text mining methodology. In this context, most frequently used single, double and triple word groups are identified. According to the results of the analysis, the general expectations of the customers from all airline companies are the quality of the service provided. Matters such as the comfort of the seats, the polite and helpfulness of the cabin crew and the deliciousness of the food have come to the forefront for all countries. In addition, customers complain of general delays from airlines. Therefore, it is obvious that airline companies experiencing this problem will lose a significant competitive advantage compared to others if they do not take the necessary precautions. On the other hand, it is concluded that customers from Africa, North America and South America attach more importance to the cleanliness of their aircraft. Finally, it is determined that South American customers had some discomfort with the high prices. Considering this information, it would be appropriate for airline companies serving this continent to determine their investment strategy focused on low prices. These recommendations will help countries achieve their sustainable development goals

    Bus driver rostering by hybrid methods based on column generation

    Tese de doutoramento, Informática (Engenharia Informática), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2018Rostering problems arise in a diversity of areas where, according to the business and labor rules, distinct variants of the problem are obtained with different constraints and objectives considered. The diversity of existing rostering problems, allied with their complexity, justifies the activity of the research community addressing them. The current research on rostering problems is mainly devoted to achieving near-optimal solutions since, most of the times, the time needed to obtain optimal solutions is very high. In this thesis, a Bus Driver Rostering Problem is addressed, to which an integer programming model is adapted from the literature, and a new decomposition model with three distinct subproblems representations is proposed. The main objective of this research is to develop and evaluate a new approach to obtain solutions to the problem in study. The new approach follows the concept of search based on column generation, which consists in using the column generation method to solve problems represented by decomposition models and, after, applying metaheuristics to search for the best combination of subproblem solutions that, when combined, result in a feasible integer solution to the complete problem. Besides the new decomposition models proposed for the Bus Driver Rostering Problem, this thesis proposes the extension of the concept of search by column generation to allow using population-based metaheuristics and presents the implementation of the first metaheuristic using populations, based on the extension, which is an evolutionary algorithm. There are two additional contributions of this thesis. The first is an heuristic allowing to obtain solutions for the subproblems in an individual or aggregated way and the second is a repair operator which can be used by the metaheuristics to repair infeasible solutions and, eventually, generate missing subproblem solutions needed. The thesis includes the description and results from an extensive set of computational tests. Multiple configurations of the column generation with three decomposition models are tested to assess the best configuration to use in the generation of the search space for the metaheuristic. Additional tests compare distinct single-solution metaheuristics and our basic evolutionary algorithm in the search for integer solutions in the search space obtained by the column generation. A final set of tests compares the results of our final algorithm (with the best column generation configuration and the evolutionary algorithm using the repair operator) and the solutions obtained by solving the problem represented by the integer programming model with a commercial solver.Programa de Apoio à Formação Avançada de Docentes do Ensino Superior Politécnico (PROTEC), SFRH/PROTEC/67405/201
