    Musemo: Express Musical Emotion Based on Neural Network

    Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering (Convergence of Science and Arts)Music elicits emotional responses, which enable people to empathize with the emotional states induced by music, experience changes in their current feelings, receive comfort, and relieve stress (Juslin & Laukka, 2004). Music emotion recognition (MER) is a field of research that extracts emotions from music through various systems and methods. Interest in this field is increasing as researchers try to use it for psychiatric purposes. In order to extract emotions from music, MER requires music and emotion labels for each music. Many MER studies use emotion labels created by non-music-specific psychologists such as Russell???s circumplex model of affects (Russell, 1980) and Ekman???s six basic emotions (Ekman, 1999). However, Zentner, Grandjean, and Scherer suggest that emotions commonly used in music are subdivided into specific areas, rather than spread across the entire spectrum of emotions (Zentner, Grandjean, & Scherer, 2008). Thus, existing MER studies have difficulties with the emotion labels that are not widely agreed through musicians and listeners. This study proposes a musical emotion recognition model ???Musemo??? that follows the Geneva emotion music scale proposed by music psychologists based on a convolution neural network. We evaluate the accuracy of the model by varying the length of music samples used as input of Musemo and achieved RMSE (root mean squared error) performance of up to 14.91%. Also, we examine the correlation among emotion labels by reducing the Musemo???s emotion output vector to two dimensions through principal component analysis. Consequently, we can get results that are similar to the study that Vuoskoski and Eerola analyzed for the Geneva emotion music scale (Vuoskoski & Eerola, 2011).     The gray matter volume of the amygdala is correlated with the perception of melodic intervals: a voxel-based morphometry study

    Music is not simply a series of organized pitches, rhythms, and timbres, it is capable of evoking emotions. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was employed to explore the neural basis that may link music to emotion. To do this, we identified the neuroanatomical correlates of the ability to extract pitch interval size in a music segment (i.e., interval perception) in a large population of healthy young adults (N = 264). Behaviorally, we found that interval perception was correlated with daily emotional experiences, indicating the intrinsic link between music and emotion. Neurally, and as expected, we found that interval perception was positively correlated with the gray matter volume (GMV) of the bilateral temporal cortex. More important, a larger GMV of the bilateral amygdala was associated with better interval perception, suggesting that the amygdala, which is the neural substrate of emotional processing, is also involved in music processing. In sum, our study provides one of first neuroanatomical evidence on the association between the amygdala and music, which contributes to our understanding of exactly how music evokes emotional responses

    Trait anxiety and pessimistic appraisal of risk and chance

    Previous research on anxiety and risk has primarily focused on the subjective probability of negative events. Prevalent definitions, however, regard risk as having two dimensions: (i) probability and (ii) utility. Furthermore, previous results remained ambivalent to whether inflated subjective risk was due to trait or to state anxiety. Finally, response-set explanations often could not be ruled out. This article presents two studies in which risk appraisal was investigated with a new text-completion method. Participants were given texts about various possible negative and positive events with omissions for the two risk dimensions. A musical mood-induction procedure was used to induce state anxiety. The participants then completed the texts by choosing the most plausible risk descriptions. Results of both studies show a global effect of trait anxiety on the appraisal of probability and utility for both positive and negative events whereas neither state anxiety nor control variables like social desirability or depression could explain any variance in the appraisal of risk and chance

    Priests of the medieval Catholic Church understood something about the relationship between affect and attitude. To instill the proper attitude in parishioners, priests dramatized the power of liturgy to save them from Hell in a service in which the experience of darkness and fear gave way to light and familiar liturgy. These ceremonies “were written and performed so as to first arouse and then allay anxieties and fears ” (Scott, 2003, p. 227): The service usually began in the dark of night with the gothic cathedral’s nave filled with worship-pers cast into total darkness. Terrifying noises, wailing, shrieks, screams, and clanging of metal mimicked the chaos of hell, giving frightened witnesses a taste of what they could expect if they were tempted to stray. After a prolonged period of this imitation of hell, the cathedral’s interior gradually became filled with the blaze of a thousand lights. As the gloom diminished, cacophony was supplanted by the measured tones of Gregorian chants and polyphony. Light and divine order replaced darkness and chaos (R.     A neural marker for social bias toward in-group accents

    Accents provide information about the speaker's geographical, socio-economic, and ethnic background. Research in applied psychology and sociolinguistics suggests that we generally prefer our own accent to other varieties of our native language and attribute more positive traits to it. Despite the widespread influence of accents on social interactions, educational and work settings the neural underpinnings of this social bias toward our own accent and, what may drive this bias, are unexplored. We measured brain activity while participants from two different geographical backgrounds listened passively to 3 English accent types embedded in an adaptation design. Cerebral activity in several regions, including bilateral amygdalae, revealed a significant interaction between the participants' own accent and the accent they listened to: while repetition of own accents elicited an enhanced neural response, repetition of the other group's accent resulted in reduced responses classically associated with adaptation. Our findings suggest that increased social relevance of, or greater emotional sensitivity to in-group accents, may underlie the own-accent bias. Our results provide a neural marker for the bias associated with accents, and show, for the first time, that the neural response to speech is partly shaped by the geographical background of the listener

    Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research

    Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years, thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip. While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and related publications quite sparse. The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second, we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet under-researched, directions in the field

    A Nietzschean Theory of Emotional Experience: Affect as Feeling Towards Value

    This paper offers a Nietzschean theory of emotion as expressed by following thesis: paradigmatic emotional experiences exhibit a distinctive kind of affective intentionality, specified in terms of felt valenced attitudes towards the (apparent) evaluative properties of their objects. Emotional experiences, on this Nietzschean view, are therefore fundamentally feelings towards value. This interpretation explains how Nietzschean affects can have evaluative intentional content without being constituted by cognitive states, as these feelings towards value are neither reducible to, nor to be thought along the lines of, judgements, perceptions, or other mental states

    Neural correlates of enhanced visual short-term memory for angry faces: An fMRI study

    Copyright: © 2008 Jackson et al.Background: Fluid and effective social communication requires that both face identity and emotional expression information are encoded and maintained in visual short-term memory (VSTM) to enable a coherent, ongoing picture of the world and its players. This appears to be of particular evolutionary importance when confronted with potentially threatening displays of emotion - previous research has shown better VSTM for angry versus happy or neutral face identities.Methodology/Principal Findings: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, here we investigated the neural correlates of this angry face benefit in VSTM. Participants were shown between one and four to-be-remembered angry, happy, or neutral faces, and after a short retention delay they stated whether a single probe face had been present or not in the previous display. All faces in any one display expressed the same emotion, and the task required memory for face identity. We find enhanced VSTM for angry face identities and describe the right hemisphere brain network underpinning this effect, which involves the globus pallidus, superior temporal sulcus, and frontal lobe. Increased activity in the globus pallidus was significantly correlated with the angry benefit in VSTM. Areas modulated by emotion were distinct from those modulated by memory load.Conclusions/Significance: Our results provide evidence for a key role of the basal ganglia as an interface between emotion and cognition, supported by a frontal, temporal, and occipital network.The authors were supported by a Wellcome Trust grant (grant number 077185/Z/05/Z) and by BBSRC (UK) grant BBS/B/16178
