Wind energy harvester interface for sensor nodes
The research topic is developping a power converting interface for the novel FLEHAP wind energy harvester allowing the produced energy to be used for powering small wireless nodes. The harvester\u2019s electrical characteristics were studied and a strategy was developped to control and mainting a maximum power transfer. The electronic power converter interface was designed, containing an AC/DC Buck-Boost converter and controlled with a low power microcontroller. Different prototypes were developped that evolved by reducing the sources of power loss and rendering the system more efficient. The validation of the system was done through simulations in the COSMIC/DITEN lab using generated signals, and then follow-up experiments were conducted with a controllable wind tunnel in the DIFI department University of Genoa. The experiment results proved the functionality of the control algorithm as well as the efficiency that was ramped up by the hardware solutions that were implemented, and generally met the requirement to provide a power source for low-power sensor nodes
Data Center Power System Emulation and GaN-Based High-Efficiency Rectifier with Reactive Power Regulation
Data centers are indispensable for today\u27s computing and networking society, which has a considerable power consumption and significant impact on power system. Meanwhile, the average energy usage efficiency of data centers is still not high, leading to significant power loss and system cost.
In this dissertation, effective methods are proposed to investigate the data center load characteristics, improve data center power usage efficiency, and reduce the system cost.
First, a dynamic power model of a typical data center ac power system is proposed, which is complete and able to predict the data center\u27s dynamic performance. Also, a converter-based data center power emulator serving as an all-in-one load is developed. The power emulator has been verified experimentally in a regional network in the HTB. Dynamic performances during voltage sag events and server load variations are emulated and discussed.
Then, a gallium nitride (GaN) based critical conduction mode (CRM) totem-pole power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is designed as the single-phase front-end rectifier to improve the data center power distribution efficiency. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) modulation with ZVS time margin is developed, and a digital variable ON-time control is employed. A hardware prototype of the PFC rectifier is built and demonstrated with high efficiency. To achieve low input current total harmonic distortion (iTHD), current distortion mechanisms are analyzed, and effective solutions for mitigating current distortion are proposed and validated with experiments.
The idea of providing reactive power compensation with the rack-level GaN-based front-end rectifiers is proposed for data centers to reduce data center\u27s power loss and system cost. Full-range ZVS modulation is extended into non-unity PF condition and a GaN-based T-type totem-pole rectifier with reactive power control is proposed. A hardware prototype of the proposed rectifier is built and demonstrated experimentally with high power efficiency and flexible reactive power regulation. Experimental emulation of the whole data center system also validates the capability of reactive power compensation by the front-end rectifiers, which can also generate or consume more reactive power to achieve flexible PF regulation and help support the power system
High Power Density, High Efficiency Single Phase Transformer-less Photovoltaic String Inverters
abstract: Two major challenges in the transformer-less, single-phase PV string inverters are common mode leakage currents and double-line-frequency power decoupling. In the proposed doubly-grounded inverter topology with innovative active-power-decoupling approach, both of these issues are simultaneously addressed. The topology allows the PV negative terminal to be directly connected to the neutral, thereby eliminating the common-mode ground-currents. The decoupling capacitance requirement is minimized by a dynamically-variable dc-link with large voltage swing, allowing an all-film-capacitor implementation. Furthermore, the use of wide-bandgap devices enables the converter operation at higher switching frequency, resulting in smaller magnetic components. The operating principles, design and optimization, and control methods are explained in detail, and compared with other transformer-less, active-decoupling topologies. A 3 kVA, 100 kHz single-phase hardware prototype at 400 V dc nominal input and 240 V ac output has been developed using SiC MOSFETs with only 45 ÎŒF/1100 V dc-link capacitance. The proposed doubly-grounded topology is then extended for split-phase PV inverter application which results in significant reduction in both the peak and RMS values of the boost stage inductor current and allows for easy design of zero voltage transition. A topological enhancement involving T-type dc-ac stage is also developed which takes advantage of the three-level switching states with reduced voltage stress on the main switches, lower switching loss and almost halved inductor current ripple.
In addition, this thesis also proposed two new schemes to improve the efficiency of conventional H-bridge inverter topology. The first scheme is to add an auxiliary zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) circuit to realize zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) for all the main switches and inherent zero-current-switching (ZCS) for the auxiliary switches. The advantages include the provision to implement zero state modulation schemes to decrease the inductor current THD, naturally adaptive auxiliary inductor current and elimination of need for large balancing capacitors. The second proposed scheme improves the system efficiency while still meeting a given THD requirement by implementing variable instantaneous switching frequency within a line frequency cycle. This scheme aims at minimizing the combined switching loss and inductor core loss by including different characteristics of the losses relative to the instantaneous switching frequency in the optimization process.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
Single stage boost inverter for standalone fuel cell applications
The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a promising technology that can be manufactured in South Africa because of the platinum catalyst required. South Africa is rich in platinum and, therefore, the PEMFC system can be cost-effectively produced. In residential stationary applications of the PEMFC a power conditioning system is required to convert the de voltage output of the PEMFC to ac voltage. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is to analyse, simulate and design a power electronic dc-ac converter. The power electronic dc-ac converter is based on a transformerless single stage power conversion scheme, which has better weight, volume and efficiency than the commonly used two stage power conversion schemes. The selected topology is the boost inverter that consists of two identical boost converters for boosting and inversion of the PEMFC de voltage. Moreover, it achieves reliable operation under nonlinear loads, sudden load changes and inrush current, using a double loop control strategy. Initially, the double loop control strategy was introduced with proportional integral (Pl) controllers. Recently, with the widespread use of proportional resonant PR controllers, the PI controllers were replaced with PR controllers to achieve zero steady state error for the ac components of the reference. However, during the implementation of the PR controllers on the boost inverter, a significant de offset in the output voltage of the boost inverter was observed, which was due to the mismatch of the boost converters' parameters. The de voltage affects pulsating torque AC machines, accuracy in domestic watt-meter and safety of residual current protection. Furthermore, the output voltages of the boost converters showed a clipping effect, which was caused by the dead time of the switching devices used in the boost converters. An integral term was added to the PR controller to form the controller here called the proportional integral resonant (PIR) controller. This controller achieved satisfactory results of de and ac voltage reference following capability and maintains the same advantages of the PI controllers. However, the efficiency was not high due to the high resistance of the inductor used in the boost inverter system

High efficiency smart voltage regulating module for green mobile computing
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.In this thesis a design for a smart high efficiency voltage regulating module capable of supplying the core of modern microprocessors incorporating dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVS) capability is accomplished using a RISC based microcontroller to facilitate all the functions required to control, protect, and supply the core with the required variable operating voltage as set by the DVS management system. Normally voltage regulating modules provide maximum power efficiency at designed peak load, and the efficiency falls off as the load moves towards lesser values. A mathematical model has been derived for the main converter and small signal analysis has been performed in order to determine system operation stability and select a control scheme that would improve converter operation response to transients and not requiring intense computational power to realize. A Simulation model was built using Matlab/Simulink and after experimenting with tuned PID controller and fuzzy logic controllers, a simple fuzzy logic control scheme was selected to control the pulse width modulated converter and several methods were devised to reduce the requirements for computational power making the whole system operation realizable using a low power RISC based microcontroller. The same microcontroller provides circuit adaptations operation in addition to providing protection to load in terms of over voltage and over current protection. A novel circuit technique and operation control scheme enables the designed module to selectively change some of the circuit elements in the main pulse width modulated buck converter so as to improve efficiency over a wider range of loads. In case of very light loads as the case when the device goes into standby, sleep or hibernation mode, a secondary converter starts operating and the main converter stops. The secondary converter adapts a different operation scheme using switched capacitor technique which provides high efficiency at low load currents. A fuzzy logic control scheme was chosen for the main converter for its lighter computational power requirement promoting implementation using ultra low power embedded controllers. Passive and active components were carefully selected to augment operational efficiency. These aspects enabled the designed voltage regulating module to operate with efficiency improvement in off peak load region in the range of 3% to 5%. At low loads as the case when the computer system goes to standby or sleep mode, the efficiency improvent is better than 13% which will have noticeable contribution in extending battery run time thus contributing to lowering the carbon footprint of human consumption
Modeling and analysis of power processing systems: Feasibility investigation and formulation of a methodology
A review is given of future power processing systems planned for the next 20 years, and the state-of-the-art of power processing design modeling and analysis techniques used to optimize power processing systems. A methodology of modeling and analysis of power processing equipment and systems has been formulated to fulfill future tradeoff studies and optimization requirements. Computer techniques were applied to simulate power processor performance and to optimize the design of power processing equipment. A program plan to systematically develop and apply the tools for power processing systems modeling and analysis is presented so that meaningful results can be obtained each year to aid the power processing system engineer and power processing equipment circuit designers in their conceptual and detail design and analysis tasks
Pem fuel cell modeling and converters design for a 48 v dc power bus
Fuel cells (FC) are electrochemical devices that directly convert the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity. Power systems based on proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology have been the object of increasing attention in recent years as they appear very promising in both stationary and mobile applications due to their high efficiency, low operating temperature allowing fast startup, high power density, solid electrolyte, long cell and stack life, low corrosion, excellent dynamic response with respect to the other FCs, and nonpolluting emissions to the environment if the hydrogen is obtained from renewable sources. The output-voltage characteristic in a PEMFC is limited by the mechanical devices which are used for regulating the air flow in its cathode, the hydrogen flow in its anode, its inner temperature, and the humidity of the air supplied to it. Usually, the FC time constants are dominated by the fuel delivery system, in particular by the slow dynamics of the compressor responsible for supplying the oxygen. As a consequence, a fast load transient demand could cause a high voltage drop in a short time known as oxygen starvation
phenomenon that is harmful for the FC. Thus, FCs are considered as a slow dynamic response equipment with respect to the load transient requirements. Therefore, batteries, ultracapacitors or other auxiliary power sources are needed to support the operation of the FC in order to ensure a fast response to any load power transient. The resulting systems, known as FC hybrid systems, can limit the slope of the current or the power generated by the FC with the use of current-controlled dc-dc converters. In this way, the reactant gas starvation phenomena can be avoided and the system
can operate with higher efficiency. The purpose of this thesis is the design of a DC-DC converter suitable to interconnect all the different elements in a PEMFC-hybrid 48-V DC bus. Since the converter could be placed between elements with very different voltage levels, a buck-boost structure has been selected. Especially to fulfill the low ripple requirements of the PEMFCs, but also those of the auxiliary storage elements and loads, our structure has inductors in series at both its input and its output. Magnetically coupling these inductors and adding a damping
network to its intermediate capacitor we have designed an easily controllable converter with second-order-buck-like dominant dynamics. This new proposed topology has high efficiency and wide bandwidth acting either as a voltage or as a current regulator. The magnetic coupling allows to control with similar performances the input or the output inductor currents. This characteristic is very useful because the designed current-controlled converter is able to withstand
shortcircuits at its output and, when connected to the FC, it facilitates to regulate the current extracted from the FC to avoid the oxygen starvation phenomenon. Testing in a safe way the converter connected to the FC required to build an FC simulator that was subsequently improved by developing an emulator that offered real-time processing and oxygen-starvation indication. To study the developed converters and emulators with different brands of PEMFCs it was necessary to reactivate long-time inactive Palcan FCs. Since the results provided by the manual reactivation procedure were unsatisfactory, an automatic reactivation system has been developed as a complementary study of the thesis.En esta tesis se avanzo en el diseño de un bus DC de 48 V que utiliza como elemento principal de generaciĂłn de energĂa elĂ©ctrica una pila de combustible.
