    STUDY OF HAND GESTURE RECOGNITION AND CLASSIFICATION

    To recognize different hand gestures and achieve efficient classification to understand static and dynamic hand movements used for communications.Static and dynamic hand movements are first captured using gesture recognition devices including Kinect device, hand movement sensors, connecting electrodes, and accelerometers. These gestures are processed using hand gesture recognition algorithms such as multivariate fuzzy decision tree, hidden Markov models (HMM), dynamic time warping framework, latent regression forest, support vector machine, and surface electromyogram. Hand movements made by both single and double hands are captured by gesture capture devices with proper illumination conditions. These captured gestures are processed for occlusions and fingers close interactions for identification of right gesture and to classify the gesture and ignore the intermittent gestures. Real-time hand gestures recognition needs robust algorithms like HMM to detect only the intended gesture. Classified gestures are then compared for the effectiveness with training and tested standard datasets like sign language alphabets and KTH datasets. Hand gesture recognition plays a very important role in some of the applications such as sign language recognition, robotics, television control, rehabilitation, and music orchestration

    Towards identification of finger flexions using single channel surface electromyography - able bodied and amputee subjects

    This research has established a method for using single channel surface electromyogram (sEMG) recorded from the forearm to identify individual finger flexion. The technique uses the volume conduction properties of the tissues and uses the magnitude and density of the singularities in the signal as a measure of strength of the muscle activity. Methods: SEMG was recorded from the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle during four different finger flexions. Based on the volume conduction properties of the tissues, sEMG was decomposed into wavelet maxima and grouped into four groups based on their magnitude. The mean magnitude and the density of each group were the inputs to the twin support vector machines (TSVM). The algorithm was tested on 11 able-bodied and one trans-radial amputated volunteer to determine the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The system was also tested to determine inter-experimental variations and variations due to difference in the electrode location. Results: Accuracy and sensitivity of identification of finger actions from single channel sEMG signal was 93% and 94% for able-bodied and 81% and 84% for trans-radial amputated respectively, and there was only a small inter-experimental variation. Conclusions: Volume conduction properties based sEMG analysis provides a suitable basis for identifying finger flexions from single channel sEMG.     Review on EMG Acquisition and Classification Techniques: Towards Zero Retraining in the Influence of User and Arm Position Independence

    The surface electromyogram (EMG) is widely studied and applied in machine control. Recent methods of classifying hand gestures reported classification rates of over 95%. However, the majority of the studies made were performed on a single user, focusing solely on the gesture classification. These studies are restrictive in practical sense: either focusing on just gestures, multi-user compatibility, or rotation independence. The variations in EMG signals due to these conditions present a challenge to the practical application of EMG devices, often requiring repetitious training per application. To the best of our knowledge, there is little comprehensive review of works done in EMG classification in the combined influence of user-independence, rotation and hand exchange. Therefore, in this paper we present a review of works related to the practical issues of EMG with a focus on the EMG placement, and recent acquisition and computing techniques to reduce training. First, we provided an overview of existing electrode placement schemes. Secondly, we compared the techniques and results of single-subject against multi-subject, multi-position settings. As a conclusion, the study of EMG classification in this direction is relatively new. However the results are encouraging and strongly indicate that EMG classification in a broad range of people and tolerance towards arm orientation is possible, and can pave way for more flexible EMG devices

    Support vector machines to detect physiological patterns for EEG and EMG-based human-computer interaction:a review

    Support vector machines (SVMs) are widely used classifiers for detecting physiological patterns in human-computer interaction (HCI). Their success is due to their versatility, robustness and large availability of free dedicated toolboxes. Frequently in the literature, insufficient details about the SVM implementation and/or parameters selection are reported, making it impossible to reproduce study analysis and results. In order to perform an optimized classification and report a proper description of the results, it is necessary to have a comprehensive critical overview of the applications of SVM. The aim of this paper is to provide a review of the usage of SVM in the determination of brain and muscle patterns for HCI, by focusing on electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) techniques. In particular, an overview of the basic principles of SVM theory is outlined, together with a description of several relevant literature implementations. Furthermore, details concerning reviewed papers are listed in tables and statistics of SVM use in the literature are presented. Suitability of SVM for HCI is discussed and critical comparisons with other classifiers are reported

    Real-time EMG based pattern recognition control for hand prostheses : a review on existing methods, challenges and future implementation

    Upper limb amputation is a condition that significantly restricts the amputees from performing their daily activities. The myoelectric prosthesis, using signals from residual stump muscles, is aimed at restoring the function of such lost limbs seamlessly. Unfortunately, the acquisition and use of such myosignals are cumbersome and complicated. Furthermore, once acquired, it usually requires heavy computational power to turn it into a user control signal. Its transition to a practical prosthesis solution is still being challenged by various factors particularly those related to the fact that each amputee has different mobility, muscle contraction forces, limb positional variations and electrode placements. Thus, a solution that can adapt or otherwise tailor itself to each individual is required for maximum utility across amputees. Modified machine learning schemes for pattern recognition have the potential to significantly reduce the factors (movement of users and contraction of the muscle) affecting the traditional electromyography (EMG)-pattern recognition methods. Although recent developments of intelligent pattern recognition techniques could discriminate multiple degrees of freedom with high-level accuracy, their efficiency level was less accessible and revealed in real-world (amputee) applications. This review paper examined the suitability of upper limb prosthesis (ULP) inventions in the healthcare sector from their technical control perspective. More focus was given to the review of real-world applications and the use of pattern recognition control on amputees. We first reviewed the overall structure of pattern recognition schemes for myo-control prosthetic systems and then discussed their real-time use on amputee upper limbs. Finally, we concluded the paper with a discussion of the existing challenges and future research recommendations

    Towards electrodeless EMG linear envelope signal recording for myo-activated prostheses control

    After amputation, the residual muscles of the limb may function in a normal way, enabling the electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded from them to be used to drive a replacement limb. These replacement limbs are called myoelectric prosthesis. The prostheses that use EMG have always been the first choice for both clinicians and engineers. Unfortunately, due to the many drawbacks of EMG (e.g. skin preparation, electromagnetic interferences, high sample rate, etc.); researchers have aspired to find suitable alternatives. One proposes the dry-contact, low-cost sensor based on a force-sensitive resistor (FSR) as a valid alternative which instead of detecting electrical events, detects mechanical events of muscle. FSR sensor is placed on the skin through a hard, circular base to sense the muscle contraction and to acquire the signal. Similarly, to reduce the output drift (resistance) caused by FSR edges (creep) and to maintain the FSR sensitivity over a wide input force range, signal conditioning (Voltage output proportional to force) is implemented. This FSR signal acquired using FSR sensor can be used directly to replace the EMG linear envelope (an important control signal in prosthetics applications). To find the best FSR position(s) to replace a single EMG lead, the simultaneous recording of EMG and FSR output is performed. Three FSRs are placed directly over the EMG electrodes, in the middle of the targeted muscle and then the individual (FSR1, FSR2 and FSR3) and combination of FSR (e.g. FSR1+FSR2, FSR2-FSR3) is evaluated. The experiment is performed on a small sample of five volunteer subjects. The result shows a high correlation (up to 0.94) between FSR output and EMG linear envelope. Consequently, the usage of the best FSR sensor position shows the ability of electrode less FSR-LE to proportionally control the prosthesis (3-D claw). Furthermore, FSR can be used to develop a universal programmable muscle signal sensor that can be suitable to control the myo-activated prosthesis

    Gesture recognition is a mathematical analysis of movement of body parts (hand / face) done with the help of computing device. It helps computers to understand human body language and build a more powerful link between humans and machines. Many research works are developed in the field of hand gesture recognition. Each works have achieved different recognition accuracies with different hand gesture datasets, however most of the firms are having insufficient insight to develop necessary achievements to meet their development in real time datasets. Under such circumstances, it is very essential to have a complete knowledge of recognition methods of hand gesture recognition, its strength and weakness and the development criteria as well. Lots of reports declare its work to be better but a complete relative analysis is lacking in these works. In this paper, we provide a study of representative techniques for hand gesture recognition, recognition methods and also presented a brief introduction about hand gesture recognition. The main objective of this work is to highlight the position of various recognition techniqueswhich can indirectly help in developing new techniques for solving the issues in the hand gesture recognition systems. Moreover we present a concise description about the hand gesture recognition systems recognition methods and the instructions for future research

    Transfer learning in hand movement intention detection based on surface electromyography signals

    Over the past several years, electromyography (EMG) signals have been used as a natural interface to interact with computers and machines. Recently, deep learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have gained interest for decoding the hand movement intention from EMG signals. However, deep networks require a large dataset to train appropriately. Creating such a database for a single subject could be very time-consuming. In this study, we addressed this issue from two perspectives: (i) we proposed a subject-transfer framework to use the knowledge learned from other subjects to compensate for a target subject’s limited data; (ii) we proposed a task-transfer framework in which the knowledge learned from a set of basic hand movements is used to classify more complex movements, which include a combination of mentioned basic movements. We introduced two CNN-based architectures for hand movement intention detection and a subject-transfer learning approach. Classifiers are tested on the Nearlab dataset, a sEMG hand/wrist movement dataset including 8 movements and 11 subjects, along with their combination, and on open-source hand sEMG dataset “NinaPro DataBase 2 (DB2).” For the Nearlab database, the subject-transfer learning approach improved the average classification accuracy of the proposed deep classifier from 92.60 to 93.30% when classifier was utilizing 10 other subjects’ data via our proposed framework. For Ninapro DB2 exercise B (17 hand movement classes), this improvement was from 81.43 to 82.87%. Moreover, three stages of analysis in task-transfer approach proved that it is possible to classify combination hand movements using the knowledge learned from a set of basic hand movements with zero, few samples and few seconds of data from the target movement classes. First stage takes advantage of shared muscle synergies to classify combined movements, while second and third stages take advantage of novel algorithms using few-shot learning and fine-tuning to use samples from target domain to further train the classifier trained on the source database. The use of information learned from basic hand movements improved classification accuracy of combined hand movements by 10%

    Empirical modelling and classification of surface electromyogram

    This thesis develops an effective feature extraction technique for sEMG signals. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is the recording of a muscle’s electrical activity from the surface of the skin. The signal contains information that is related to the anatomy and physiology of the muscle. In clinical applications, the signal is used for the diagnosis of neuro-muscular diseases and disorders. Another application of sEMG is for device control application where the signal is used for controlling devices such as prosthetic devices, robots, and human – machine interfaces. Signal classification is used to extract relevant information that represent a particular state (or class) of the sEMG signal. This stater (or class) of the sEMG depicts the information about the underlying pathology or is used as control input for other devices. Therefore it is important that the sEMG is classified in to the relevant class with high accuracy to ensure reliable application in a given field. Many researchers have attempted to improve the classification accuracy of the sEMG signal. Generally the number of electrodes attached to the surface of the skin also needs to be increased in order to increase the classification accuracy. In some cases this number becomes prohibitively high. On the other hand, with a decrease in the number of electrodes the classification accuracy has been reported to decrease. In order to overcome these challenges, in this thesis a new feature extraction technique has been developed. As opposed to the established global time or frequency domain analysis of the sEMG signal, the technique developed in this thesis relies on the well established volume conduction model of sEMG generation. Developed feature extraction technique is then applied to sEMG recorded from low level digital contraction with low signal to noise ratio. A high classification rate of approximately 93% in four classes of low level contraction was achieved by using single channel of sEMG recording. It was further established that the placement of electrode did not have significant effect on the accuracy and reliability of the classification.
