The Hidden Web, XML and Semantic Web: A Scientific Data Management Perspective

    Get PDF
The World Wide Web no longer consists just of HTML pages. Our work sheds light on a number of trends on the Internet that go beyond simple Web pages. The hidden Web provides a wealth of data in semi-structured form, accessible through Web forms and Web services. These services, as well as numerous other applications on the Web, commonly use XML, the eXtensible Markup Language. XML has become the lingua franca of the Internet that allows customized markups to be defined for specific domains. On top of XML, the Semantic Web grows as a common structured data source. In this work, we first explain each of these developments in detail. Using real-world examples from scientific domains of great interest today, we then demonstrate how these new developments can assist the managing, harvesting, and organization of data on the Web. On the way, we also illustrate the current research avenues in these domains. We believe that this effort would help bridge multiple database tracks, thereby attracting researchers with a view to extend database technology.Comment: EDBT - Tutorial (2011

This tutorial overviews principles behind recent works on training and maintaining machine learning models over relational data, with an emphasis on the exploitation of the relational data structure to improve the runtime performance of the learning task. The tutorial has the following parts: 1) Database research for data science 2) Three main ideas to achieve performance improvements 2.1) Turn the ML problem into a DB problem 2.2) Exploit structure of the data and problem 2.3) Exploit engineering tools of a DB researcher 3) Avenues for future researchComment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2008.0786

Flipping the One-Shot Library Workshop: Collaborations between Librarians and Writing Program Faculty

At UC San Diego, instruction librarians and the Muir College Writing Program (MCWP) director collaborated to redesign the one-shot library workshops provided to the college’s first-year students enrolled in a research class. Following their discussion about student knowledge gaps about conducting research, the library instruction coordinator suggested flipping the workshop so that, prior to coming to the library, students would complete an interactive online tutorial. The new flipped library workshops now consist of two sequential parts—an online interactive tutorial and an in-person workshop. Librarians created an online tutorial on database searching, made up of multimedia and active learning experiences for students to complete before the library workshop. After learning online about the research process, database search strategies, and full-text access, students find and annotate three scholarly articles. They then bring their source(s) to the in-person library workshop. During the workshop, librarians guide students through a topic mapping exercise, an open-ended research question exercise, and an introduction to the BEAM method to describe how their chosen source addressed their research question. Employing the flipped model provides benefits to both sides of this partnership. Librarians can see how well students implement the skills taught in the tutorial, while helping students begin to use their sources for the next phase of their research and writing process. This, in turn, alleviates part the instructors’ workload and fills an unmet need for the writing program. Students have responded positively to the two-pronged approach and are better prepared to succeed in their writing classes

    Multi-model Data Management : What's New and What's Next?

    Get PDF
TutorialAs more businesses realized that data, in all forms and sizes, is critical to making the best possible decisions, we see the continued growth of systems that support massive volume of non-relational or unstructured forms of data. Nothing shows the picture more starkly than the Gartner Magic quadrant for operational database management systems, which assumes that, by 2017, all leading operational DBMSs will offer multiple data models, relational and NoSQL, in a single DBMS platform. Having a single data platform for managing both well-structured data and NoSQL data is beneficial to users; this approach reduces significantly integration, migration, development, maintenance, and operational issues. Therefore, a challenging research work is how to develop efficient consolidated single data management platform covering both relational data and NoSQL to reduce integration issues, simplify operations, and eliminate migration issues. In this tutorial, we review the previous work on multi-model data management and provide the insights on the research challenges and directions for future work. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: A Marriage of Innovation in Nursing EBP and Digital Literacy Education

    Get PDF
Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the foundation of modern health services. It improves patient outcomes and quality of care by combining clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence to guide health care decisions. The ability to find, evaluate and apply evidence is essential for EBP. However, preparing the future nursing workforce with the required knowledge and skills to do so can be a challenge. Objectives: At Murdoch University, we have integrated various digital tools with our personal learning platform to develop an interactive tutorial for final-year nursing students. The tutorial aims to improve skills in the areas of research, critical appraisal and digital literacy. Methods: Using the analogy of a marriage, this paper will present the case study of a collaborative project between the University Library and the College of Science, Health, Engineering & Education (the ‘wedding party’) to develop a self-paced, interactive online tutorial on database searching and systematic reviews, as applied in nursing practice. Four key elements went into planning this marriage: Something old: Camtasia (familiar to both Library and College) Something new: LibWizard (a new Library software acquisition) Something borrowed: PebblePad (managed by the College) Something blue: Digital badging (micro-credentialing) These elements were integrated into a single digital learning object, which was launched in late January 2019 (the ‘wedding’). Results: This innovative online tutorial was successful in engaging students and developing their digital and information literacy skills for evidence-based practice, and future improvements were also identified
