When Wittgenstein was young, he wrote a small book intended to solve all of philosophy’s problems with language, called Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922). As an intellectual piece, the Tractatus is a strange beast, written by a student with the voice of a professor. Its process of creation resembles that of a fictional piece: the author is struck by inspiration, labours in solitude, and then translates the vision onto paper. Yet the Tractatus was not meant to be a work of fiction, rather to have the final say in a conceptual debate about the relation between language and world. This little book was meant to be the end of all philosophical conversation, the final nail in its coffin. Written outside the university, the Tractatus had the ambition of ending the academic conversation in philosophy, while it refused to engage with that conversation. This was not fair-play on any account. The Tractatus was never intended to be an academic text; it had no footnotes, no references to other authors. It was a vision of language that Wittgenstein had shared with the world

An information assistant system for the prevention of tunnel vision in crisis management

In the crisis management environment, tunnel vision is a set of bias in decision makers’ cognitive process which often leads to incorrect understanding of the real crisis situation, biased perception of information, and improper decisions. The tunnel vision phenomenon is a consequence of both the challenges in the task and the natural limitation in a human being’s cognitive process. An information assistant system is proposed with the purpose of preventing tunnel vision. The system serves as a platform for monitoring the on-going crisis event. All information goes through the system before arrives at the user. The system enhances the data quality, reduces the data quantity and presents the crisis information in a manner that prevents or repairs the user’s cognitive overload. While working with such a system, the users (crisis managers) are expected to be more likely to stay aware of the actual situation, stay open minded to possibilities, and make proper decisions

This document is the written component that accompanies the fine art exhibition Tunnel Vision that took place from April 14 to April 27, 2014 at the Design on Main Gallery in Ames, Iowa. It investigates how extensive use of technology has disrupted American relationships and experiences with people and the environment. The installation, comprised of oil paintings, vinyl, and LCD projections, prompts viewers to consider why we choose to either engage in synthetic technology or in real, authentic experiences. This thesis discusses the personal, artistic, spiritual, and narrative influences of the body of work. The overarching themes and processes evident in the installation and within individual works are discussed. My thesis installation takes its viewers on a journey that presents to them a situation in which they will have to make decisions. The intent is to provoke thought concerning these judgments. This installation responds to the need for our collective society to put down the devices and pay attention to the world and people that surround us. It is a juxtaposition of the human and technological interpretations of the world. The familiar and mundane act of participating in the artificial world of our devices has been magnified through this exhibition, and is a reflection of who we have become

Wavevector Selective Metasurfaces and Tunnel Vision Filters

Metasurfaces offer unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light propagation, replacing bulk optical components and exhibiting exotic optical effects. One of the basic properties of the metasurfaces, which renders them as frequency selective surfaces, is the ability to transmit or reflect radiation within a narrow spectral band that can be engineered on demand. Here we introduce and demonstrate experimentally in the THz domain the concept of wavevector selective surfaces -- metasurfaces transparent only within a narrow range of light propagation directions operating effectively as tunnel vision filters. Practical implementations of the new concept include applications in wavefront manipulation, observational instruments, vision and free-space communication in light-scattering environments, as well as passive camouflage
