    Residue Arithmetic VLSI Array Architecture for Manipulator Pseudo-Inverse Jacobian Computation

    Most Cartesian-based control strategies require the computation of the manipulator inverse Jacobian in real time at every sampling period. In some cases, the Jacobian matrix is not of full column or row rank due to singularity or redundant robot configuration. This requires the computation of the manipulator pseudo-inverse Jacobian in real time. The calculation of the pseudo-inverse Jacobian may become extremely sensitive to small perturbation in the data and numerical instabilities, when the Jacobian matrix is not of full column or row rank. Even if the Jacobian matrix is of full rank, the ill-conditioned problem may still plague the computation of the pseudoinverse Jacobian. This paper presents the use of residue arithmetic for the exact computation of the manipulator pseudo-inverse Jacobian to obviate the roundoff errors normally associated with the computations. A two-level macro-pipelined residue arithmetic array architecture implementing the Decell’s pseudo-inverse algorithm has been developed to overcome the ill-conditioned problem of the pseudo-inverse computation. Furthermore, the Decell algorithm is quite suitable for VLSI array implementation to achieve the real-time computation requirement. The first-level arrays are data-driven, wavefront-like arrays and perform the matrix multiplications, matrix diagonal additions, and trace computations. A pool or sequence of the first-level arrays are then configured into a second-level macro-pipeline with outputs of one array acting as inputs to another array in the pipe. The proposed architecture can calculate the pseudoinverse Jacobian with a pipelined time in the same computational complexity order as evaluating a matrix product in a wavefront array

    Algorithms and VLSI architectures for parametric additive synthesis

    A parametric additive synthesis approach to sound synthesis is advantageous as it can model sounds in a large scale manner, unlike the classical sinusoidal additive based synthesis paradigms. It is known that a large body of naturally occurring sounds are resonant in character and thus fit the concept well. This thesis is concerned with the computational optimisation of a super class of form ant synthesis which extends the sinusoidal parameters with a spread parameter known as band width. Here a modified formant algorithm is introduced which can be traced back to work done at IRCAM, Paris. When impulse driven, a filter based approach to modelling a formant limits the computational work-load. It is assumed that the filter's coefficients are fixed at initialisation, thus avoiding interpolation which can cause the filter to become chaotic. A filter which is more complex than a second order section is required. Temporal resolution of an impulse generator is achieved by using a two stage polyphase decimator which drives many filterbanks. Each filterbank describes one formant and is composed of sub-elements which allow variation of the formant’s parameters. A resource manager is discussed to overcome the possibility of all sub- banks operating in unison. All filterbanks for one voice are connected in series to the impulse generator and their outputs are summed and scaled accordingly. An explorative study of number systems for DSP algorithms and their architectures is investigated. I invented a new theoretical mechanism for multi-level logic based DSP. Its aims are to reduce the number of transistors and to increase their functionality. A review of synthesis algorithms and VLSI architectures are discussed in a case study between a filter based bit-serial and a CORDIC based sinusoidal generator. They are both of similar size, but the latter is always guaranteed to be stable

    Multiplierless CSD techniques for high performance FPGA implementation of digital filters.

    I leverage FastCSD to develop a new, high performance iterative multiplierless structure based on a novel real-time CSD recoding, so that more zero partial products are introduced. Up to 66.7% zero partial products occur compared to 50% in the traditional modified Booth's recoding. Also, this structure reduces the non-zero partial products to a minimum. As a result, the number of arithmetic operations in the carry-save structure is reduced. Thus, an overall speed-up, as well as low-power consumption can be achieved. Furthermore, because the proposed structure involves real time CSD recoding and does not require a fixed value for the multiplier input to be known a priori, the proposed multiplier can be applied to implement digital filters with non-fixed filter coefficients, such as adaptive filters.My work is based on a dramatic new technique for converting between 2's complement and CSD number systems, and results in high-performance structures that are particularly effective for implementing adaptive systems in reconfigurable logic.My research focus is on two key ideas for improving DSP performance: (1) Develop new high performance, efficient shift-add techniques ("multiplierless") to implement the multiply-add operations without the need for a traditional multiplier structure. (2) There is a growing trend toward design prototyping and even production in FPGAs as opposed to dedicated DSP processors or ASICs; leverage this trend synergistically with the new multiplierless structures to improve performance.Implementation of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms in hardware, such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), requires a large number of multipliers. Fast, low area multiply-adds have become critical in modern commercial and military DSP applications. In many contemporary real-time DSP and multimedia applications, system performance is severely impacted by the limitations of currently available speed, energy efficiency, and area requirement of an onboard silicon multiplier.I also introduce a new multi-input Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) multiplier unit, which requires fewer shift/add/subtract operations and reduced CSD number conversion overhead compared to existing techniques. This results in reduced power consumption and area requirements in the hardware implementation of DSP algorithms. Furthermore, because all the products are produced simultaneously, the multiplication speed and thus the throughput are improved. The multi-input multiplier unit is applied to implement digital filters with non-fixed filter coefficients, such as adaptive filters. The implementation cost of these digital filters can be further reduced by limiting the wordlength of the input signal with little or no sacrifice to the filter performance, which is confirmed by my simulation results. The proposed multiplier unit can also be applied to other DSP algorithms, such as digital filter banks or matrix and vector multiplications.Finally, the tradeoff between filter order and coefficient length in the design and implementation of high-performance filters in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is discussed. Non-minimum order FIR filters are designed for implementation using Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) multiplierless implementation techniques. By increasing the filter order, the length of the coefficients can be decreased without reducing the filter performance. Thus, an overall hardware savings can be achieved.Adaptive system implementations require real-time conversion of coefficients to Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) or similar representations to benefit from multiplierless techniques for implementing filters. Multiplierless approaches are used to reduce the hardware and increase the throughput. This dissertation introduces the first non-iterative hardware algorithm to convert 2's complement numbers to their CSD representations (FastCSD) using a fixed number of shift and logic operations. As a result, the power consumption and area requirements required for hardware implementation of DSP algorithms in which the coefficients are not known a priori can be greatly reduced. Because all CSD digits are produced simultaneously, the conversion speed and thus the throughput are improved when compared to overlap-and-scan techniques such as Booth's recoding

    Joint Optimization of Low-power DCT Architecture and Effcient Quantization Technique for Embedded Image Compression

    International audienceThe Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)-based image com- pression is widely used in today's communication systems. Signi cant research devoted to this domain has demonstrated that the optical com- pression methods can o er a higher speed but su er from bad image quality and a growing complexity. To meet the challenges of higher im- age quality and high speed processing, in this chapter, we present a joint system for DCT-based image compression by combining a VLSI archi- tecture of the DCT algorithm and an e cient quantization technique. Our approach is, rstly, based on a new granularity method in order to take advantage of the adjacent pixel correlation of the input blocks and to improve the visual quality of the reconstructed image. Second, a new architecture based on the Canonical Signed Digit and a novel Common Subexpression Elimination technique is proposed to replace the constant multipliers. Finally, a recon gurable quantization method is presented to e ectively save the computational complexity. Experimental results obtained with a prototype based on FPGA implementation and com- parisons with existing works corroborate the validity of the proposed optimizations in terms of power reduction, speed increase, silicon area saving and PSNR improvement

    Energy efficient hardware acceleration of multimedia processing tools

    The world of mobile devices is experiencing an ongoing trend of feature enhancement and generalpurpose multimedia platform convergence. This trend poses many grand challenges, the most pressing being their limited battery life as a consequence of delivering computationally demanding features. The envisaged mobile application features can be considered to be accelerated by a set of underpinning hardware blocks Based on the survey that this thesis presents on modem video compression standards and their associated enabling technologies, it is concluded that tight energy and throughput constraints can still be effectively tackled at algorithmic level in order to design re-usable optimised hardware acceleration cores. To prove these conclusions, the work m this thesis is focused on two of the basic enabling technologies that support mobile video applications, namely the Shape Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform (SA-DCT) and its inverse, the SA-IDCT. The hardware architectures presented in this work have been designed with energy efficiency in mind. This goal is achieved by employing high level techniques such as redundant computation elimination, parallelism and low switching computation structures. Both architectures compare favourably against the relevant pnor art in the literature. The SA-DCT/IDCT technologies are instances of a more general computation - namely, both are Constant Matrix Multiplication (CMM) operations. Thus, this thesis also proposes an algorithm for the efficient hardware design of any general CMM-based enabling technology. The proposed algorithm leverages the effective solution search capability of genetic programming. A bonus feature of the proposed modelling approach is that it is further amenable to hardware acceleration. Another bonus feature is an early exit mechanism that achieves large search space reductions .Results show an improvement on state of the art algorithms with future potential for even greater savings

    High sample-rate Givens rotations for recursive least squares

    The design of an application-specific integrated circuit of a parallel array processor is considered for recursive least squares by QR decomposition using Givens rotations, applicable in adaptive filtering and beamforming applications. Emphasis is on high sample-rate operation, which, for this recursive algorithm, means that the time to perform arithmetic operations is critical. The algorithm, architecture and arithmetic are considered in a single integrated design procedure to achieve optimum results. A realisation approach using standard arithmetic operators, add, multiply and divide is adopted. The design of high-throughput operators with low delay is addressed for fixed- and floating-point number formats, and the application of redundant arithmetic considered. New redundant multiplier architectures are presented enabling reductions in area of up to 25%, whilst maintaining low delay. A technique is presented enabling the use of a conventional tree multiplier in recursive applications, allowing savings in area and delay. Two new divider architectures are presented showing benefits compared with the radix-2 modified SRT algorithm. Givens rotation algorithms are examined to determine their suitability for VLSI implementation. A novel algorithm, based on the Squared Givens Rotation (SGR) algorithm, is developed enabling the sample-rate to be increased by a factor of approximately 6 and offering area reductions up to a factor of 2 over previous approaches. An estimated sample-rate of 136 MHz could be achieved using a standard cell approach and O.35pm CMOS technology. The enhanced SGR algorithm has been compared with a CORDIC approach and shown to benefit by a factor of 3 in area and over 11 in sample-rate. When compared with a recent implementation on a parallel array of general purpose (GP) DSP chips, it is estimated that a single application specific chip could offer up to 1,500 times the computation obtained from a single OP DSP chip

    BCD REPETITIVE STRATEGY TO DECREASE THE LATENCY

    We present the formula and architecture of the BCD parallel multiplier that exploits some qualities of two different redundant BCD codes to hurry up its computation: the redundant BCD excess-3 code (XS-3), and also the overloaded BCD representation (ODDS). Additionally, new techniques are designed to reduce considerably the latency and section of previous representative high end implementations. Partial goods are generated in parallel utilizing a signed-digit radix-10 recoding from the BCD multiplier using the digit set [-5, 5], and some positive multiplicand multiples (0X, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) created in XS-3. This encoding has lots of advantages. First, it's a self-complementing code, to ensure that an adverse multiplicand multiple could be acquired just by inverting the items of the related positive one. Finally, the partial products could be recoded towards the ODDS representation just by adding a continuing factor in to the partial product reduction tree. Because the ODDS utilize a similar 4-bit binary encoding as non-redundant BCD, conventional binary VLSI circuit techniques, for example binary carry-save adders and compressor trees, could be adapted efficiently to do decimal operations. We reveal that the suggested decimal multiplier comes with an area improvement roughly within the range 20-35 % for similar target delays with regards to the fastest implementation
