Video prototyping of dog-inspired non-verbal affective communication for an appearance constrained robot

The findings suggest that even with the limited modalities for non-verbal expression offered by a Pioneer robot, which does not have a dog-like appearance, these cues were effective for non-verbal affective communication
Towards Learning ‘Self’ and Emotional Knowledge in Social and Cultural Human-Agent Interactions

Posted by permission of the publisher.This article presents research towards the development of a virtual learning environment (VLE) inhabited by intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) and modeling a scenario of inter-cultural interactions. The ultimate aim of this VLE is to allow users to reflect upon and learn about intercultural communication and collaboration. Rather than predefining the interactions among the virtual agents and scripting the possible interactions afforded by this environment, we pursue a bottomup approach whereby inter-cultural communication emerges from interactions with and among autonomous agents and the user(s). The intelligent virtual agents that are inhabiting this environment are expected to be able to broaden their knowledge about the world and other agents, which may be of different cultural backgrounds, through interactions. This work is part of a collaborative effort within a European research project called eCIRCUS. Specifically, this article focuses on our continuing research concerned with emotional knowledge learning in autobiographic social agents.Peer reviewe
Towards Social Autonomous Vehicles: Efficient Collision Avoidance Scheme Using Richardson's Arms Race Model
Background Road collisions and casualties pose a serious threat to commuters
around the globe. Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) aim to make the use of technology
to reduce the road accidents. However, the most of research work in the context
of collision avoidance has been performed to address, separately, the rear end,
front end and lateral collisions in less congested and with high
inter-vehicular distances. Purpose The goal of this paper is to introduce the
concept of a social agent, which interact with other AVs in social manners like
humans are social having the capability of predicting intentions, i.e.
mentalizing and copying the actions of each other, i.e. mirroring. The proposed
social agent is based on a human-brain inspired mentalizing and mirroring
capabilities and has been modelled for collision detection and avoidance under
congested urban road traffic.
Method We designed our social agent having the capabilities of mentalizing
and mirroring and for this purpose we utilized Exploratory Agent Based Modeling
(EABM) level of Cognitive Agent Based Computing (CABC) framework proposed by
Niazi and Hussain.
Results Our simulation and practical experiments reveal that by embedding
Richardson's arms race model within AVs, collisions can be avoided while
travelling on congested urban roads in a flock like topologies. The performance
of the proposed social agent has been compared at two different levels.Comment: 48 pages, 21 figure

Socially-distributed cognition and cognitive architectures: towards an ACT-R-based cognitive social simulation capability
ACT-R is one of the most widely used cognitive architectures, and it has been used to model hundreds of phenomena described in the cognitive psychology literature. In spite of this, there are relatively few studies that have attempted to apply ACT-R to situations involving social interaction. This is an important omission since the social aspects of cognition have been a growing area of interest in the cognitive science community, and an understanding of the dynamics of collective cognition is of particular importance in many organizational settings. In order to support the computational modeling and simulation of socially-distributed cognitive processes, a simulation capability based on the ACT-R architecture is described. This capability features a number of extensions to the core ACT-R architecture that are intended to support social interaction and collaborative problem solving. The core features of a number of supporting applications and services are also described. These applications/services support the execution, monitoring and analysis of simulation experiments. Finally, a system designed to record human behavioral data in a collective problem-solving task is described. This system is being used to undertake a range of experiments with teams of human subjects, and it will ultimately support the development of high fidelity ACT-R cognitive models. Such models can be used in conjunction with the ACT-R simulation capability to test hypotheses concerning the interaction between cognitive, social and technological factors in tasks involving socially-distributed information processing
