    A Privacy-Preserving Protocol for the Kidney Exchange Problem

    Kidney donations from living donors form an attractive alternative to long waiting times on a list for a post-mortem donation. However, even if a living donor for a given patient is found, the donor's kidney might not meet the patient's medical requirements. If several patients are in this position, they may be able to exchange donors in a cyclic fashion. Current algorithmic approaches for determining such exchange cycles neglect the privacy requirements of donors and patients as they require their medical data to be centrally collected and evaluated. In this paper, we present the first distributed privacy-preserving protocol for kidney exchange that ensures the correct computing of the exchange cycles while at the same time protecting the privacy of the patients' sensitive medical data. We prove correctness and security of the new protocol and evaluate its practical performance

    A Social Media Platform in Higher Education

    This paper reports on the successful use of Graasp, a social media platform, by university students for their collaborative work. Graasp features a number of innovations, such as administrator-free creation of collaborative spaces, context-aware recommendation and privacy management. In the context of a EU-funded project involving large test beds, we have been able to extend this platform with lightweight tools (widgets) aimed for learning and competence development and to validate its usefulness in a collaborative learning context

    Privacy and Online Social Networks: A Systematic Literature Review of Concerns, Preservation, and Policies

    Background: Social media usage is one of the most popular online activities, but with it comes privacy concerns due to how personal data are handled by these social networking sites. Prior literature aimed at identifying users’ privacy concerns as well as user behavior associated with privacy mitigation strategies and policies. However, OSN users continue to divulge private information online and privacy remains an issue. Accordingly, this review aims to present extant research on this topic, and to highlight any potential research gaps. Method: The paper presents a systematic literature review for the period 2006 - 2021, in which 33 full papers that explored privacy concerns in online social networks (OSN), users’ behavior associated with privacy preservation strategies and OSN privacy policies were examined. Results: The findings indicate that users are concerned about their identity being stolen, the disclosure of sensitive information by third-party applications and through data leakage and the degree of control users have over their data. Strategies such as encryption, authentication, and privacy settings configuration, can be used to address users’ concerns. Users generally do not leverage privacy settings available to them, or read the privacy policies, but will opt to share information based on the benefits to be derived from OSNs. Conclusion: OSN users have specific privacy concerns due primarily to the inherent way in which personal data are handled. Different preservation strategies are available to be used by OSN users. Policies are provided to inform users, however, these policies at times are difficult to read and understand, but studies show that there is no direct effect on the behavior of OSN users. Further research is needed to elucidate the correlation between the relative effectiveness of different privacy preservation strategies and the privacy concerns exhibited by users. Extending the research to comparatively assess different social media sites could help with better awareness of the true influence of privacy policies on user behavior

    The IoT European Platforms Initiative (IoT-EPI) projects are addressing the topic of Internet of Things and Platforms for Connected Smart Objects and aim to deliver an IoT extended into a web of platforms for connected devices and objects that supports smart environments, businesses, services and persons with dynamic and adaptive configuration capabilities. The specific areas of focus of the research activities are architectures and semantic interoperability, which reliably cover multiple use cases. The goal is to deliver dynamically-configured infrastructure and integration platforms for connected smart objects covering multiple technologies and multiple intelligent artefacts. The IoT-EPI ecosystem has been created with the objective of increasing the impact of the IoT-related European research and innovation, including seven European promising projects on IoT platforms: AGILE, BIG IoT, INTER-IoT, VICINITY, SymbIoTe, bIoTope, and TagItSmart.This white paper provides an insight regarding interoperability in the IoT platforms and ecosystems created and used by IoT-EPI. The scope of this document covers the interoperability aspects, challenges and approaches that cope with interoperability in the current existing IoT platforms and presents some insights regarding the future of interoperability in this context. It presents possible solutions, and a possible IoT interoperability platform architecture

    dissertationWe develop a novel framework for friend-to-friend (f2f) distributed services (F3DS) by which applications can easily offer peer-to-peer (p2p) services among social peers with resource sharing governed by approximated levels of social altruism. Our frame- work differs significantly from typical p2p collaboration in that it provides a founda- tion for distributed applications to cooperate based on pre-existing trust and altruism among social peers. With the goal of facilitating the approximation of relative levels of altruism among social peers within F3DS, we introduce a new metric: SocialDistance. SocialDistance is a synthetic metric that combines direct levels of altruism between peers with an altruism decay for each hop to approximate indirect levels of altruism. The resulting multihop altruism levels are used by F3DS applications to proportion and prioritize the sharing of resources with other social peers. We use SocialDistance to implement a novel flash file/patch distribution method, SocialSwarm. SocialSwarm uses the SocialDistance metric as part of its resource allocation to overcome the neces- sity of (and inefficiency created by) resource bartering among friends participating in a BitTorrent swarm. We find that SocialSwarm achieves an average file download time reduction of 25% to 35% in comparison with standard BitTorrent under a variety of configurations and conditions, including file sizes, maximum SocialDistance, as well as leech and seed counts. The most socially connected peers yield up to a 47% decrease in download completion time in comparison with average nonsocial BitTorrent swarms. We also use the F3DS framework to implement novel malware detection application- F3DS Antivirus (F3AV)-and evaluate it on the Amazon cloud. We show that with f2f sharing of resources, F3AV achieves a 65% increase in the detection rate of 0- to 1-day-old malware among social peers as compared to the average of individual scanners. Furthermore, we show that F3AV provides the greatest diversity of mal- ware scanners (and thus malware protection) to social hubs-those nodes that are positioned to provide strategic defense against socially aware malware

    Rational Multiparty Computation

    The field of rational cryptography considers the design of cryptographic protocols in the presence of rational agents seeking to maximize local utility functions. This departs from the standard secure multiparty computation setting, where players are assumed to be either honest or malicious. ^ We detail the construction of both a two-party and a multiparty game theoretic framework for constructing rational cryptographic protocols. Our framework specifies the utility function assumptions necessary to realize the privacy, correctness, and fairness guarantees for protocols. We demonstrate that our framework correctly models cryptographic protocols, such as rational secret sharing, where existing work considers equilibrium concepts that yield unreasonable equilibria. Similarly, we demonstrate that cryptography may be applied to the game theoretic domain, constructing an auction market not realizable in the original formulation. Additionally, we demonstrate that modeling players as rational agents allows us to design a protocol that destabilizes coalitions. Thus, we establish a mutual benefit from combining the two fields, while demonstrating the applicability of our framework to real-world market environments.^ We also give an application of game theory to adversarial interactions where cryptography is not necessary. Specifically, we consider adversarial machine learning, where the adversary is rational and reacts to the presence of a data miner. We give a general extension to classification algorithms that returns greater expected utility for the data miner than existing classification methods

    Electronic markets have been a prominent topic of research for the past decade. Moreover, we have seen the rise but also the disappearance of many electronic marketplaces in practice. Today, electronic markets are a firm component of inter-organisational exchanges and can be observed in many branches. The Research Symposium on Emerging Electronic Markets is an annual conference bringing together researchers working on various topics concerning electronic markets in research and practice. The focus theme of the13th Research Symposium on Emerging Electronic Markets (RSEEM 2006) was ?Evolution in Electronic Markets?. Looking back at more than 10 years of research activities in electronic markets, the evolution can be well observed. While electronic commerce activities were based largely on catalogue-based shopping, there are now many examples that go beyond pure catalogues. For example, dynamic and flexible electronic transactions such as electronic negotiations and electronic auctions are enabled. Negotiations and auctions are the basis for inter-organisational trade exchanges about services as well as products. Mass customisation opens up new opportunities for electronic markets. Multichannel electronic commerce represents today?s various requirements posed on information and communication technology as well as on organisational structures. In recent years, service-oriented architectures of electronic markets have enabled ICT infrastructures for supporting flexible e-commerce and e-market solutions. RSEEM 2006 was held at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany in September 2006. The proceedings show a variety of approaches and include the selected 8 research papers.
