    Assistive technology design and development for acceptable robotics companions for ageing years

It includes technologies which enhance well-being of individuals, specifically for older people. The ACCOMPANY project focuses on home companion technologies and issues surrounding technology development for assistive purposes. The project responds to some overlooked aspects of technology design, divided into multiple areas such as empathic and social human-robot interaction, robot learning and memory visualisation, and monitoring persons’ activities at home. To bring these aspects together, a dedicated task is identified to ensure technological integration of these multiple approaches on an existing robotic platform, Care-O-BotÂź3 in the context of a smart-home environment utilising a multitude of sensor arrays. Formative and summative evaluation cycles are then used to assess the emerging prototype towards identifying acceptable behaviours and roles for the robot, for example role as a butler or a trainer, while also comparing user requirements to achieved progress. In a novel approach, the project considers ethical concerns and by highlighting principles such as autonomy, independence, enablement, safety and privacy, it embarks on providing a discussion medium where user views on these principles and the existing tension between some of these principles, for example tension between privacy and autonomy over safety, can be captured and considered in design cycles and throughout project developmentsPeer reviewe

    Automatic Identification of Emotional Information in Spanish TV Debates and Human-Machine Interactions

    Automatic emotion detection is a very attractive field of research that can help build more natural human–machine interaction systems. However, several issues arise when real scenarios are considered, such as the tendency toward neutrality, which makes it difficult to obtain balanced datasets, or the lack of standards for the annotation of emotional categories. Moreover, the intrinsic subjectivity of emotional information increases the difficulty of obtaining valuable data to train machine learning-based algorithms. In this work, two different real scenarios were tackled: human–human interactions in TV debates and human–machine interactions with a virtual agent. For comparison purposes, an analysis of the emotional information was conducted in both. Thus, a profiling of the speakers associated with each task was carried out. Furthermore, different classification experiments show that deep learning approaches can be useful for detecting speakers’ emotional information, mainly for arousal, valence, and dominance levels, reaching a 0.7F1-score.The research presented in this paper was conducted as part of the AMIC and EMPATHIC projects, which received funding from the Spanish Minister of Science under grants TIN2017-85854-C4-3-R and PDC2021-120846-C43 and from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 769872.     The cultural shaping of compassion

    In this chapter, we first review the existing literature on cross-cultural studies on compassion. While cultural similarities exist, we demonstrate cultural differences in the conception, experience, and expression of compassion. Then we present our own work on the cultural shaping of compassion by introducing Affect Valuation Theory ( e.g., Tsai, Knutson, & Fung, 2006), our theoretical framework. We show how the desire to avoid feeling negative partly explains cultural differences in conceptualizations and expressions of compassion. Specifically, the more people want to avoid feeling negative, the more they focus on the positive (e.g., comforting memories) than the negative (e.g., the pain of someone\u27s death) when responding to others\u27 suffering, and the more they regard responses as helpful that focus on the positive (vs. negative). Finally, we discuss implications of our work for counseling, health care, and public service settings, as well as for interventions that aim to promote compassion

    An audio-visual approach to teaching the social aspects of sustainable product design

    This paper considers the impact of audio-visual resources in enabling students to develop an understanding of the social aspects of sustainable product design. Building on literature concerning the learning preferences of ‘Net Generation’ learners, three audio-visual workshops were developed to introduce students to the wider social aspects of sustainability and encourage students to reflect upon the impact of their practice. The workshops were delivered in five universities in Britain and Ireland among undergraduate and postgraduate students. They were designed to encourage students to reflect upon carefully designed audio-visual materia ls in a group-based environment, seeking to foster the preferences of Net Generation learners through collaborative learning and learning through discovery. It also sought to address the perceived weaknesses of this generation of learners by encouraging critical reflection. The workshops proved to be popular with students and were successful in enabling them to grasp the complexity of the social aspects of sustainable design in a short span of time, as well as in encouraging personal responses and creative problem solving through an exploration of design thinking solutions
