    Evaluation of Single-Chip, Real-Time Tomographic Data Processing on FPGA - SoC Devices

    A novel approach to tomographic data processing has been developed and evaluated using the Jagiellonian PET (J-PET) scanner as an example. We propose a system in which there is no need for powerful, local to the scanner processing facility, capable to reconstruct images on the fly. Instead we introduce a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) System-on-Chip (SoC) platform connected directly to data streams coming from the scanner, which can perform event building, filtering, coincidence search and Region-Of-Response (ROR) reconstruction by the programmable logic and visualization by the integrated processors.     A flexible and versatile studio for synchronized multi-view video recording

    In recent years, the convergence of Computer Vision and Computer Graphics has put forth new research areas that work on scene reconstruction from and analysis of multi-view video footage. In free-viewpoint video, for example, new views of a scene are generated from an arbitrary viewpoint in real-time from a set of real multi-view input video streams. The analysis of real-world scenes from multi-view video to extract motion information or reflection models is another field of research that greatly benefits from high-quality input data. Building a recording setup for multi-view video involves a great effort on the hardware as well as the software side. The amount of image data to be processed is huge, a decent lighting and camera setup is essential for a naturalistic scene appearance and robust background subtraction, and the computing infrastructure has to enable real-time processing of the recorded material. This paper describes the recording setup for multi-view video acquisition that enables the synchronized recording of dynamic scenes from multiple camera positions under controlled conditions. The requirements to the room and their implementation in the separate components of the studio are described in detail. The efficiency and flexibility of the room is demonstrated on the basis of the results that we obtain with a real-time 3D scene reconstruction system, a system for non-intrusive optical motion capture and a model-based free-viewpoint video system for human actors.

    A framework for realistic 3D tele-immersion

    Meeting, socializing and conversing online with a group of people using teleconferencing systems is still quite differ- ent from the experience of meeting face to face. We are abruptly aware that we are online and that the people we are engaging with are not in close proximity. Analogous to how talking on the telephone does not replicate the experi- ence of talking in person. Several causes for these differences have been identified and we propose inspiring and innova- tive solutions to these hurdles in attempt to provide a more realistic, believable and engaging online conversational expe- rience. We present the distributed and scalable framework REVERIE that provides a balanced mix of these solutions. Applications build on top of the REVERIE framework will be able to provide interactive, immersive, photo-realistic ex- periences to a multitude of users that for them will feel much more similar to having face to face meetings than the expe- rience offered by conventional teleconferencing systems

    Process-Driven and Flow-Based Processing of Industrial Sensor Data

    For machine manufacturing companies, besides the production of high quality and reliable machines, requirements have emerged to maintain machine-related aspects through digital services. The development of such services in the field of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is dealing with solutions such as effective condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. However, appropriate data sources are needed on which digital services can be technically based. As many powerful and cheap sensors have been introduced over the last years, their integration into complex machines is promising for developing digital services for various scenarios. It is apparent that for components handling recorded data of these sensors they must usually deal with large amounts of data. In particular, the labeling of raw sensor data must be furthered by a technical solution. To deal with these data handling challenges in a generic way, a sensor processing pipeline (SPP) was developed, which provides effective methods to capture, process, store, and visualize raw sensor data based on a processing chain. Based on the example of a machine manufacturing company, the SPP approach is presented in this work. For the company involved, the approach has revealed promising results

    Understanding Next-Generation VR: Classifying Commodity Clusters for Immersive Virtual Reality

    Commodity clusters offer the ability to deliver higher performance computer graphics at lower prices than traditional graphics supercomputers. Immersive virtual reality systems demand notoriously high computational requirements to deliver adequate real-time graphics, leading to the emergence of commodity clusters for immersive virtual reality. Such clusters deliver the graphics power needed by leveraging the combined power of several computers to meet the demands of real-time interactive immersive computer graphics.However, the field of commodity cluster-based virtual reality is still in early stages of development and the field is currently adhoc in nature and lacks order. There is no accepted means for comparing approaches and implementers are left with instinctual or trial-and-error means for selecting an approach.This paper provides a classification system that facilitates understanding not only of the nature of different clustering systems but also the interrelations between them. The system is built from a new model for generalized computer graphics applications, which is based on the flow of data through a sequence of operations over the entire context of the application. Prior models and classification systems have been too focused in context and application whereas the system described here provides a unified means for comparison of works within the field

    Instrumentation and Evaluation of Distributed Computations

    Distributed computations are a very important aspect of modern computing, especially given the rise of distributed systems used for applications such as web search, massively multiplayer online games, financial trading, and cloud computing. When running these computations across several physical machines it becomes much more difficult to determine exactly what is occurring on each system at a specific point in time. This is due to each server having an independent clock, thus making event timestamps inherently inaccurate across machine boundaries. Another difficulty with evaluating distributed experiments is the coordination required to launch daemons, executables, and logging across all machines, followed by the necessary gathering of all related output data. The goal of this research is to overcome these obstacles and construct a single, global timeline of events from all servers. We employ high-resolution clock synchronization to bring all servers within microseconds as measured by a modified version of the Network Time Protocol implementation. Kernel and user-level events with wall-clock timestamps are then logged during basic network socket experiments. These data are then collected from each server and merged into a single dataset, sorted by timestamp, and plotted on a timeline. The entire experiment, from setup to teardown to data collection, is coordinated from a single server. The timeline visualizations provide a narrative of not only how packets flow between servers, but also how kernel interrupt handlers and other events shape an experiment's execution
