Automated syntactic mediation for Web service integration
As the Web Services and Grid community adopt Semantic Web technology, we observe a shift towards higher-level workflow composition and service discovery practices. While this provides excellent functionality to non-expert users, more sophisticated middleware is required to hide the details of service invocation and service integration. An investigation of a common Bioinformatics use case reveals that the execution of high-level workflow designs requires additional processing to harmonise syntactically incompatible service interfaces. In this paper, we present an architecture to support the automatic reconciliation of data formats in such Web Service worklflows. The mediation of data is driven by ontologies that encapsulate the information contained in heterogeneous data structures supplying a common, conceptual data representation. Data conversion is carried out by a Configurable Mediator component, consuming mappings between \xml schemas and \owl ontologies. We describe our system and give examples of our mapping language against the background of a Bioinformatics use case
Ontology of core data mining entities
In this article, we present OntoDM-core, an ontology of core data mining
entities. OntoDM-core defines themost essential datamining entities in a three-layered
ontological structure comprising of a specification, an implementation and an application
layer. It provides a representational framework for the description of mining
structured data, and in addition provides taxonomies of datasets, data mining tasks,
generalizations, data mining algorithms and constraints, based on the type of data.
OntoDM-core is designed to support a wide range of applications/use cases, such as
semantic annotation of data mining algorithms, datasets and results; annotation of
QSAR studies in the context of drug discovery investigations; and disambiguation of
terms in text mining. The ontology has been thoroughly assessed following the practices
in ontology engineering, is fully interoperable with many domain resources and
is easy to extend
A framework for deriving semantic web services
Web service-based development represents an emerging approach for the development of distributed information systems. Web services have been mainly applied by software practitioners as a means to modularize system functionality that can be offered across a network (e.g., intranet and/or the Internet). Although web services have been
predominantly developed as a technical solution for integrating software systems, there is a more business-oriented aspect that developers and enterprises need to deal with in order to benefit from the full potential of web services in an electronic market. This âignoredâ aspect is the representation of the semantics underlying the services themselves as well as the âthingsâ that the services manage. Currently languages like the Web Services Description Language (WSDL) provide the syntactic means to describe web services, but
lack in providing a semantic underpinning. In order to harvest all the benefits of web services technology, a framework has been developed for deriving business semantics from syntactic descriptions of web services. The benefits of such a framework are two-fold. Firstly, the framework provides a way to gradually construct domain ontologies from previously defined technical services. Secondly, the framework enables the
migration of syntactically defined web services toward semantic web services. The study follows a design research approach which (1) identifies the problem area and its relevance from an industrial case study and previous research, (2) develops the
framework as a design artifact and (3) evaluates the application of the framework through a relevant scenario
Ontology based Scene Creation for the Development of Automated Vehicles
The introduction of automated vehicles without permanent human supervision
demands a functional system description, including functional system boundaries
and a comprehensive safety analysis. These inputs to the technical development
can be identified and analyzed by a scenario-based approach. Furthermore, to
establish an economical test and release process, a large number of scenarios
must be identified to obtain meaningful test results. Experts are doing well to
identify scenarios that are difficult to handle or unlikely to happen. However,
experts are unlikely to identify all scenarios possible based on the knowledge
they have on hand. Expert knowledge modeled for computer aided processing may
help for the purpose of providing a wide range of scenarios. This contribution
reviews ontologies as knowledge-based systems in the field of automated
vehicles, and proposes a generation of traffic scenes in natural language as a
basis for a scenario creation.Comment: Accepted at the 2018 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, 8 pages, 10

Ontologies on the semantic web
As an informational technology, the World Wide Web has enjoyed spectacular success. In just ten years it has transformed the way information is produced, stored, and shared in arenas as diverse as shopping, family photo albums, and high-level academic research. The âSemantic Webâ was touted by its developers as equally revolutionary but has not yet achieved anything like the Webâs exponential uptake. This 17 000 word survey article explores why this might be so, from a perspective that bridges both philosophy and IT
A Semantic-Agent Framework for PaaS Interoperability
Suchismita Hoare, Na Helian, and Nathan Baddoo, 'A Semantic-Agent Framework for PaaS Interoperability', in Proceedings of the The IEEE International Conference on Cloud and Big Data Computing, Toulouse, France, 18-21, July 2016. Despite this, the service model is still plagued with several adoption inhibitors, one of which is lack of interoperability between proprietary application infrastructure services of public PaaS solutions. Although there is some progress in addressing the general PaaS interoperability issue through various devised solutions focused primarily on API compatibility and platform-agnostic application design models, interoperability specific to differentiated services provided by the existing public PaaS providers and the resultant disparity owing to the offered servicesâ semantics has not been addressed effectively, yet. The literature indicates that this dimension of PaaS interoperability is awaiting evolution in the state-of-the-art. This paper proposes the initial system design of a PaaS interoperability (IntPaaS) framework to be developed through the integration of semantic and agent technologies to enable transparent interoperability between incompatible PaaS services. This will involve uniform description through semantic annotation of PaaS provider services utilizing the OWL-S ontology, creating a knowledgebase that enables software agents to automatically search for suitable services to support Cloud-based Greenfield application development. The rest of the paper discusses the identified research problem along with the proposed solution to address the issue.Submitted Versio
ODESWS, A Semantic Web Service Development
ODE SWS is a development environment to design Semantic
Web Services (SWS) at the knowledge level. ODE SWS describe
the service following a problem-solving approach in which the
SWS are modeled using tasks, to represent the SWS functional
features, and methods, to describe the SWS internal structure. In this paper, we describe the ODE SWS architecture and the capabilities of its graphical interface, which enables users to design SWS independently of the semantic markup language used to represent them
Extending OWL-S for the Composition of Web Services Generated With a Legacy Application Wrapper
Despite numerous efforts by various developers, web service composition is
still a difficult problem to tackle. Lot of progressive research has been made
on the development of suitable standards. These researches help to alleviate
and overcome some of the web services composition issues. However, the legacy
application wrappers generate nonstandard WSDL which hinder the progress.
Indeed, in addition to their lack of semantics, WSDLs have sometimes different
shapes because they are adapted to circumvent some technical implementation
aspect. In this paper, we propose a method for the semi automatic composition
of web services in the context of the NeuroLOG project. In this project the
reuse of processing tools relies on a legacy application wrapper called jGASW.
The paper describes the extensions to OWL-S in order to introduce and enable
the composition of web services generated using the jGASW wrapper and also to
implement consistency checks regarding these services.Comment: ICIW 2012, The Seventh International Conference on Internet and Web
