An Example of Pi^0_3-complete Infinitary Rational Relation
We give in this paper an example of infinitary rational relation, accepted by
a 2-tape B\"{u}chi automaton, which is Pi^0_3-complete in the Borel hierarchy.
Moreover the example of infinitary rational relation given in this paper has a
very simple structure and can be easily described by its sections
Probability flux as a method for detecting scaling
We introduce a new method for detecting scaling in time series. The method
uses the properties of the probability flux for stochastic self-affine
processes and is called the probability flux analysis (PFA). The advantages of
this method are: 1) it is independent of the finiteness of the moments of the
self-affine process; 2) it does not require a binning procedure for numerical
evaluation of the the probability density function. These properties make the
method particularly efficient for heavy tailed distributions in which the
variance is not finite, for example, in Levy alpha-stable processes. This
utility is established using a comparison with the diffusion entropy (DE)
method
Beyond Research Ethics: Dialogues in Neuro-ICT Research
open access articleThe increasing use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to help facilitate neuroscience adds a new level of complexity to the question of how ethical issues of such research can be identified and addressed. Current research ethics practice, based on ethics reviews by institutional review boards (IRB) and underpinned by ethical principlism, has been widely criticized. In this article, we develop an alternative way of approaching ethics in neuro-ICT research, based on discourse ethics, which implements Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) through dialogues. We draw on our work in Ethics Support, using the Human Brain Project (HBP) as empirical evidence of the viability of this approach
On Termination for Faulty Channel Machines
A channel machine consists of a finite controller together with several fifo
channels; the controller can read messages from the head of a channel and write
messages to the tail of a channel. In this paper, we focus on channel machines
with insertion errors, i.e., machines in whose channels messages can
spontaneously appear. Such devices have been previously introduced in the study
of Metric Temporal Logic. We consider the termination problem: are all the
computations of a given insertion channel machine finite? We show that this
problem has non-elementary, yet primitive recursive complexity
Direct Measurement of 2D and 3D Interprecipitate Distance Distributions from Atom-Probe Tomographic Reconstructions
Edge-to-edge interprecipitate distance distributions are critical for
predicting precipitation strengthening of alloys and other physical phenomena.
A method to calculate this 3D distance and the 2D interplanar distance from
atom-probe tomographic data is presented. It is applied to nanometer-sized
Cu-rich precipitates in an Fe-1.7 at.% Cu alloy. Experimental interprecipitate
distance distributions are discussed
