    The ππ\pi\pi interaction in nuclear matter from a study of the π+Aπ+π±A\pi^+ A \to \pi^+ \pi^{\pm} A' reactions

    The pion-production reactions π+Aπ+π±A\pi^+ A \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm} A' were studied on 2H^{2}H, 12C^{12}C, 40Ca^{40}Ca, and 208Pb^{208}Pb nuclei at an incident pion energy of Tπ+T_{\pi^{+}}=283 MeV. Pions were detected in coincidence using the CHAOS spectrometer. The experimental results are reduced to differential cross sections and compared to both theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The composite ratio C\cal CππA_{\pi\pi}^A between the π+π±\pi^{+}\pi^{\pm} invariant masses on nuclei and on the nucleon is also presented. Near the 2mπ2m_{\pi} threshold pion pairs couple to (ππ)I=J=0(\pi\pi)_{I=J=0} when produced in the π+π+π\pi^+\to \pi^+\pi^- reaction channel. There is a marked near-threshold enhancement of C\cal Cπ+πA_{\pi^+\pi^-}^A which is consistent with theoretical predictions addressing the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear matter. Furthermore, the behaviour of C\cal Cπ+πA_{\pi^+\pi^-}^A is well described when the restoration of chiral symmetry is combined with standard P-wave renormalization of pions in nuclear matter. On the other hand, nuclear matter only weakly influences C\cal Cπ+π+A_{\pi^+\pi^+}^A, which displays a flat behaviour throughout the energy range regardless of AA.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, PS format, accepted for publication in Nucl.     Resonance Production and ππ\pi\pi S-wave in π+pπππ++precoil\pi^- + p \rightarrow \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+ + p_{recoil} at 190 GeV/c

    The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced πππ+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, 0.5<m3π<2.50.5 < m_{3\pi} < 2.5 GeV/c2^2 , and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, 0.1<t<1.00.1 < t < 1.0 (GeV/c)2^2 . This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant 3π3\pi production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected 3π3\pi partial waves with JPC=0+J^{PC} = 0^{-+}, 1++1^{++}, 2+2^{-+}, 2++2^{++}, and 4++4^{++}. In these waves, we observe the well-known ground-state mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson a1(1420)a_1(1420) decaying into f0(980)πf_0(980) \pi. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the ππ+\pi^-\pi^+ subsystem with IGJPC=0+0++I^{G}J^{PC} = 0^+ 0^{++} in various partial waves from the πππ+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ data. Evidence is found for correlation of the f0(980)f_0(980) and f0(1500)f_0(1500) appearing as intermediate ππ+\pi^- \pi^+ isobars in the decay of the known π(1800)\pi(1800) and π2(1880)\pi_2(1880).Comment: 96 page

    Long-lived neutral-kaon flux measurement for the KOTO experiment

    The KOTO (K0K^0 at Tokai) experiment aims to observe the CP-violating rare decay KLπ0ννˉK_L \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu} by using a long-lived neutral-kaon beam produced by the 30 GeV proton beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. The KLK_L flux is an essential parameter for the measurement of the branching fraction. Three KLK_L neutral decay modes, KL3π0K_L \rightarrow 3\pi^0, KL2π0K_L \rightarrow 2\pi^0, and KL2γK_L \rightarrow 2\gamma were used to measure the KLK_L flux in the beam line in the 2013 KOTO engineering run. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the detector acceptance for these decays. Agreement was found between the simulation model and the experimental data, and the remaining systematic uncertainty was estimated at the 1.4\% level. The KLK_L flux was measured as (4.183±0.017stat.±0.059sys.)×107(4.183 \pm 0.017_{\mathrm{stat.}} \pm 0.059_{\mathrm{sys.}}) \times 10^7 KLK_L per 2×10142\times 10^{14} protons on a 66-mm-long Au target.Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures.     Measurement of the Dalitz plot slope parameters of the K±π±π+πK^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- decay

    The distribution of the K±π±π+πK^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- decays in the Dalitz plot has been measured by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS with a sample of 4.71×1084.71\times 10^8 fully reconstructed events. With the standard Particle Data Group parameterization the following values of the slope parameters were obtained: g=(21.134±0.017)%g=(-21.134\pm0.017)\%, h=(1.848±0.040)%h=(1.848\pm0.040)\%, k=(0.463±0.014)%k=(-0.463\pm0.014)\%. The quality and statistical accuracy of the data have allowed an improvement in precision by more than an order of magnitude, and are such as to warrant a more elaborate theoretical treatment, including pion-pion rescattering, which is in preparation.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures.     Shapes of polyhedra and triangulations of the sphere

    The space of shapes of a polyhedron with given total angles less than 2\pi at each of its n vertices has a Kaehler metric, locally isometric to complex hyperbolic space CH^{n-3}. The metric is not complete: collisions between vertices take place a finite distance from a nonsingular point. The metric completion is a complex hyperbolic cone-manifold. In some interesting special cases, the metric completion is an orbifold. The concrete description of these spaces of shapes gives information about the combinatorial classification of triangulations of the sphere with no more than 6 triangles at a vertex.Comment: 39 pages.     Search for direct CP-violation in K+- --> pi+-pi0pi0 decays

    A search for direct CP-violation in K+- --> pi+-pi0pi0 decays based on 47.14 million events has been performed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. The asymmetry in the Dalitz plot linear slopes A_g=(g^+ - g^-)/(g^+ + g^-) is measured to be A_g=(1.8 +- 2.6).10^{-4}. The design of the experiment and the method of analysis provide good control of instrumental charge asymmetries in this measurement. The precision of the result is limited by statistics and is almost one order of magnitude better than that of previous measurements by other experiments.Comment: 14 page

    Measurement of inclusive π0\pi^0 production in the Charged-Current Interactions of Neutrinos in a 1.3-GeV wide band beam

    In this paper we report on the measurement of the rate of inclusive π0\pi^0 production induced by charged-current neutrino interactions in a C8_8H8_8 target at a mean energy of 1.3 GeV in the K2K near detector. Out of a sample of 11,606 charged current neutrino interactions, we select 479 π0\pi^0 events with two reconstructed photons. We find that the cross section for the inclusive π0\pi^0 production relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section is σCCπ0σCCQE=0.426±0.032(stat.)±0.035(syst.)\frac{\sigma_{CC\pi^0}}{\sigma_{CCQE}}=0.426\pm0.032(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.) The energy dependent cross section ratio is also measured.
