Acquisition of phonologically weak function words in L2 english by speakers of L1 brazilian and european portuguese
The present work is a study on acquisition of weak forms of function words in English as
a second language by native speakers of European and Brazilian Portuguese. Considering that the
two varieties of Portuguese differ from each other and from English in terms of rhythm patterns
and unstressed vowel system, we supposed that reduction in the weak forms of function words in
L2 English would be different for the speakers of L1 EP and L1 BP.
The participants were divided into five groups according to their L1 and the level of L2.
There were two groups of participants with a lower and a higher level of L2 both for L1 EP and
L1 BP. They were asked to read out loud three dialogues in English, the voices were recorded and
the data was segmented in Praat. The materials contained three categories of clitics: the indefinite
article, auxiliary verbs, and object pronouns.
The statistical analysis showed certain differences between the speakers of L1 EP and L1
BP and the native speakers of AE. On the whole, the speakers of L1 EP seem to show more
tendency to reduction in the weak forms of English function words than the speakers of L1 BP. At
the same time, the speakers of both varieties of L1 Portuguese had less tendency to reduction in
auxiliary verbs than the native speakers of AE.O presente estudo é dedicado à aquisição das formas fracas das palavras funcionais em
apresentada no estudo.
(Giegerich, 1992; Ramus, Nespor & Mehler, 1999; Roach, 2009; Ladefoged & Johnson, 2011;
permite distinguir entre as vogais tónicas e átonas (McCully, 2009; Ladefoged & Johnson, 2011;
Grant, 2014; Plag et al., 2011; Correia, Butler, Vigário & Frota, 2015; Mendes Cantoni, 2009).
& d’Andrade, 2000; Câmara, 1972; Wetzels, 1992; Mateus & d’Andrade, 2000; Bisol, 2000; Bisol
2003; Dixon, 2007; Hewings, 2007; Roach, 2009; Cruttenden, 2014; Toneli, 2014; Carley & Mees,
2019). iv
predomina a ênclise.
ser esperados de falantes de uma L1 com ritmo puramente acentual;
redução das formas fracas em comparação com os falantes de L1 PB L2 IA;
nas formas fracas dos artigos do que nos verbos auxiliares;
Os participantes da pesquisa foram 5 grupos de falantes: 1) L1 IA; 2) L1 PE e L2 IA B1/B2;
3) L1 PE e L2 IA C1/C2; 4) L1 PB e L2 IA B1/B2; 5) L1 PB e L2 IA C1/C2.
auxiliares/modais (8) e pronomes objeto (8).
comprova a terceira hipótese.
Assim, a
Entretanto, as
Nesta altura,
podemos dizer que houve algumas indicações nesse sentido
Intonation and variation: the multiplicity of forms and senses
This work focuses on the multiplicity of forms which the intonation patterns may have and the multiple senses they express. The background for discussing these issues is vocal gestuality taken as an index of the biological, psychological and social characteristics of the speaker. The intonation sound patterns vary according to sociolinguistic features, dialect type and speech style and they are used to express modalities, regional and social characteristics, propositional and social attitudes and affective states. The intervening factors in the relation between form and meaning are numerous and they interfere with the perception of the intonation patterns. Results from acoustic and perceptual experiments in several languages are presented and their contribution to the study of the communicative functions and variability of intonation are discussed

The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. Many papers are also dedicated to speech and second language studies. The online publication with FUP allows direct access to sound and video linked to papers (when downloaded)
Speaking Rate among Professional Radio Newscasters: Hebrew Speakers
This is a preliminary and exploratory study aimed to examine and quantify speaking and articulation rate among professional Hebrew speaking radio newscasters. Nineteen radio newscasters (ten men and nine women) were digitally recorded during live public broadcasts. The newscasters were assigned to two age-groups: “younger” (under 30 years) and “older” (over 58 years). All recordings were first transcribed and then analyzed acoustically to measure overall speaking rate, speaking rate within-item, articulation rate, pause duration and percentage of disfluency. The average speaking rate obtained for the entire group was 5.90 Syllable-per-Second, and average articulation rate was 6.42. No differences were found between men and women for any of the observed measures, and no age-group differences were found. This study provides preliminary rate data for a reading task, performed by Hebrew speaking professional newscasters. It also suggests that within this professional population of adult speakers, rate and fluency measures are not affected by gender or age
The mapping of localized contents in the videogame inFamous 2: a multimodal corpus-based analysis
Abstract : This dissertation aims at analyzing how localization practices operate in video games from the perspective of the fields of Translation Studies and multimodal corpus-based research. Furthermore, it intends to investigate how the video game inFamous 2 (PS3) and its localized counterpart is constrained by implicit cultural specificities in their Brazilian-Portuguese translation and specificities of its very own media. As a secondary objective, but not less important, this study aims at developing a systemic representation of localized content in video game interactions by providing a computer-assisted framework of annotation for written and audio-visual data. This analysis was based on the annotated data performed by the software ELAN. The methodological and analytical framework also have the purpose of observing and describing the aspects of terminological consistency, cultural awareness, narrative and semantic prosodic nature within the linguistic pairs En-US and Pt-Br in the dialogue lines belonging to the characters in the game. As for the results obtained, the annotation framework used informed slight changes in terms of the evaluative language that accompanied the dialogue lines of the certain characters, who are part of the game?s plot. The lexical profile observed in the dialogue lines associated to these characters displayed an attenuation in the semantic prosodic features in terms of collocation profile and language register. Finally, the discussions and interpretations expanded from the data collected are used to systematically map the practices involved in digital game localization by drawing upon the practical aspects of this field of expertise in translation studies
Transgender in the Spotlight. The Other-representation of Transgender People in the British Press: A Corpus-based Discourse Analysis
In the last decade, the construction of transgender identities has been increasingly
raising interest in scholars in the field of (socio)linguistics (Kulick 1996, 1999, 2000;
Zimman 2009, 2010, 2014; Baker 2014b) and, more in general, in society as a whole,
due to the considerable attention drawn by public episodes in the social, cultural and
legal spheres, such as the transition of former athlete Caitlyn Jenner in the USA, the
various transgender soldiers involved in public affairs in the last few years, like
Chelsea Manning, or even the complex issue regarding gender-neutral toilets, which
raised discussions globally.
In our society, where gender diversity has grown as a highly discussed topic,
language, due to its social function, may take on a significant role in shaping and
representing new gendered communities of practice. The existing binary and
heteronormative linguistic categories, generally used in defining gender, are clashing
with the current, so far unrepresented and now emerging communities, possibly
leading to the creation of new hybrid, inclusive, non-discriminating discourses that
comprise social, cultural and legal issues.
On the basis of this popularity, the press works as one of the most visible
actors in the creation of these discourses. That is why it became the primary focus for
the collection of the corpus under scrutiny in this investigation. The geographical
area investigated, the United Kingdom, was chosen as it represents one of the
countries that first introduced the world to the discussion about transgender identities
raised by the above-mentioned Manning case. Chelsea Manning, a transgender
woman, and former soldier of the US army, had been accused of leaking sealed
documents to WikiLeaks, convicted and sent to a male prison, which put under the
spotlight the issue of placing transgender people in gender-appropriate prisons.
Against this backdrop, the aim of this study is to investigate how transgender
individuals and their communities are shaped in and through language, starting from
the premise that language may profoundly influence the way gender is understood by
society, being one of the most powerful means of manipulation, through which it is
possible to persuade and even instill specific beliefs or convictions.
iii
The corpus collected to pursue the aim of this investigation comprises eight
British national newspapers, namely The Guardian, the i, The Daily Telegraph, The
Times, the Daily Express, the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror and The Sun. The
newspapers were selected on the grounds of their circulation rates and retrieved from
the UK Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC 2015). Apart from distribution
percentages, the other criterion followed in the selection of the newspapers was that
of equally representing one of the dichotomies the British press is often defined by,
that is, the distinction between quality and popular press (Jucker 1992). In fact, the
first four newspapers (The Guardian, the i, The Daily Telegraph and The Times) can
be considered as representative of the first category whilst the others (the Daily
Express, the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror and The Sun) as belonging to the second.
The news articles were collected in a time span that stretches from January 2013 to
December 2015. The starting point was dictated by the diffusion of one major event
that channelled the discussion about transgender identities, the above-mentioned
Manning case, whilst the collection ended in 2015, the year in which this research
project was conceived. Except for rubrics advertising the weekly television, cinema
and theatre schedules, different genres of news articles were included in the corpus
(i.e., news stories, editorials, etc.), for a total of 3,138 news articles and over 2
million word tokens. For the purpose of this analysis, the TransCor (i.e., the entire
corpus) was divided into two sub-corpora: the QualCor and the PopCor, each
comprising all news articles from the quality press and the popular press
respectively. The main corpus analysis tool used for the research is AntConc 3.4.4m
(Anthony 2014), as explained in sub-section 4.2.1.
As demonstrated by numerous scholars (Baker & McEnery 2005; Baker
2006, 2010, 2012; Bednarek 2006; Baker, Gabrielatos & McEnery 2013a; Partington
2015), Corpus Linguistics has proven to be noticeably useful and, at times, a
necessary tool for the analysis of large amounts of data in order to uncover linguistic
and semantic patterns in the representations of social categories, minority groups or
even individuals who managed to attract the attention of society upon them. The
purpose of this research – to highlight those linguistic and semantic patterns utilized
in the representation of transgender people in the British press – has been achieved
through a combination of theoretical and methodological frameworks, including not
iv
only Corpus Linguistics but also Critical Discourse Analysis, Language, Gender and
Sexuality, and News Discourse. Drawing upon the framework of Critical Discourse
Analysis (Fairclough 1995, 2005; Wodak 1997; Bucholtz 2003; van Leeuwen 2005)
and the use of Corpus Linguistics methodologies (McEnery and Wilson 1996; Baker
2006, 2014a; McEnery and Hardie 2011), this study presents the final outcomes of a
research that focuses on the representation of transgender people in the British press
as social actors, and the semantic prosodies (Sinclair 1991; Louw 1993; Stubbs 1996;
Partington 1998; Hunston 2007; Partington, Duguid and Taylor 2013) constructed
discursively.
The findings indicate a difference in the representation of transgender people
in the quality and the popular press, specifically in the use of terminology and,
generally speaking, about the semantic prosody surrounding the topic. The
collocation analysis highlights, for example, that while in many cases transgender
people are represented as victims in the QualCor, they are assigned an active role as
perpetrators of violence in the PopCor.
One of the most impressive results emerging from the analysis of the two
sub-corpora relates to the use of the terms transgender and transsexual, shifting
towards a more inclusive rhetoric in the last year (2015). The investigation has
shown that the two terms transgender and transsexual were initially used both as
adjectives and as nouns, a function, the latter, which is disliked by many transgender
individuals, as we point out in the thesis, drawing upon the guidelines for nondiscriminatory
language considered in this investigation. This trend tends to decrease
in the following years, and the two terms, improperly used as synonyms or nouns,
starts to be used as adjectives more and more often (see chapter five). The analysis
also focused on the use of pronouns and pre- and post-modifiers. Another aspect of
the analysis focuses on the results emerging from the collocation analysis which
points to the use of semantic categories of representation to which transgender
people are associated to in the press (see chapter six and seven)

Synopsis:
The present volume presents a selection of the revised and peer-reviewed proceedings articles of the 50th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL 50) which was hosted virtually by the faculty and students from the University of Texas at Austin. With contributions from rising and senior scholars from Europe and the Americas, the volume demonstrates the breadth of research in contemporary Romance linguistics with articles that apply corpus-based and laboratory methods, as well as theory, to explore the structure, use, and development of the Romance languages. The articles cover a wide range of fields including morphosyntax, semantics, language variation and change, sociophonetics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics. In an introductory article, the editors document the sudden transition of LSRL 50 to a virtual format and acknowledge those who helped them to ensure the continuity of this annual scholarly meeting
