FABRIC: A National-Scale Programmable Experimental Network Infrastructure
FABRIC is a unique national research infrastructure to enable cutting-edge and exploratory research at-scale in networking, cybersecurity, distributed computing and storage systems, machine learning, and science applications. It is an everywhere-programmable nationwide instrument comprised of novel extensible network elements equipped with large amounts of compute and storage, interconnected by high speed, dedicated optical links. It will connect a number of specialized testbeds for cloud research (NSF Cloud testbeds CloudLab and Chameleon), for research beyond 5G technologies (Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research or PAWR), as well as production high-performance computing facilities and science instruments to create a rich fabric for a wide variety of experimental activities
Large-scale educational telecommunications systems for the US: An analysis of educational needs and technological opportunities
The needs to be served, the subsectors in which the system might be used, the technology employed, and the prospects for future utilization of an educational telecommunications delivery system are described and analyzed. Educational subsectors are analyzed with emphasis on the current status and trends within each subsector. Issues which affect future development, and prospects for future use of media, technology, and large-scale electronic delivery within each subsector are included. Information on technology utilization is presented. Educational telecommunications services are identified and grouped into categories: public television and radio, instructional television, computer aided instruction, computer resource sharing, and information resource sharing. Technology based services, their current utilization, and factors which affect future development are stressed. The role of communications satellites in providing these services is discussed. Efforts to analyze and estimate future utilization of large-scale educational telecommunications are summarized. Factors which affect future utilization are identified. Conclusions are presented
Perspectives of Integrated “Next Industrial Revolution” Clusters in Poland and Siberia
Rozdział z: Functioning of the Local Production Systems in Central and Eastern European Countries and Siberia. Case Studies and Comparative Studies, ed. Mariusz E. Sokołowicz. The paper presents the mapping of potential next industrial revolution clusters in Poland and Siberia. Deindustrialization of the cities and struggles with its consequences are one of the fundamental economic problems in current global economy. Some hope to find an answer to that problem is associated with the idea of next industrial revolution and reindustrialization initiatives. In the paper, projects aimed at developing next industrial revolution clusters are analyzed. The objective of the research was to examine new industrial revolution paradigm as a platform for establishing university-based trans-border industry clusters in Poland and Siberia47 and to raise awareness of next industry revolution initiatives.Monograph financed under a contract of execution of the international scientific project within 7th Framework Programme of the European Union, co-financed by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (title: “Functioning of the Local Production Systems in the Conditions of Economic Crisis (Comparative Analysis and Benchmarking for the EU and Beyond”)). Monografia sfinansowana w oparciu o umowę o wykonanie projektu między narodowego w ramach 7. Programu Ramowego UE, współfinansowanego ze środków Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego (tytuł projektu: „Funkcjonowanie lokalnych systemów produkcyjnych w warunkach kryzysu gospodarczego (analiza porównawcza i benchmarking w wybranych krajach UE oraz krajach trzecich”))
Horizon Report 2009
A library management information system in a multi-campus environment
The Office of Library Services in the Central Administration of the State
University of New York (SUNY) has, since 1975, been developing a library
management information system based on the analysis of library and other
bibliographic and academic data which are available in machine readable
form. Although primarily designed for the SUNY libraries, the processes
are applicable in other academic libraries because of the general availability
of the data used in the system. The task has changed over the years as
new ideas and opportunities were realized, as new appreciations of the
obtained results were attained, and as the technical environment has
evolved. Nonetheless, the fundamental structure of the system design has
not changed since the first ideas in 1974.
This is an interim report. Progress has been agonizingly slow for two
reasons. First, the difficulty of obtaining support and resources has been a
real hindrance; the work has been squeezed into overcrowded schedules
and ever-straitening budgets. Second, many of the machine-readable data
which one confidently felt would be available in the late 1970s or very early
1980s are still not available. Some years, at least, will pass before the work
can be completed as we see it now. Who knows what new ideas and
opportunities will emerge as new results become available? Nonetheless,
enough has been achieved to justify this report.published or submitted for publicatio
