    MIMO Radar Waveform Optimization With Prior Information of the Extended Target and Clutter

    The concept of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar allows each transmitting antenna element to transmit an arbitrary waveform. This provides extra degrees of freedom compared to the traditional transmit beamforming approach. It has been shown in the recent literature that MIMO radar systems have many advantages. In this paper, we consider the joint optimization of waveforms and receiving filters in the MIMO radar for the case of extended target in clutter. A novel iterative algorithm is proposed to optimize the waveforms and receiving filters such that the detection performance can be maximized. The corresponding iterative algorithms are also developed for the case where only the statistics or the uncertainty set of the target impulse response is available. These algorithms guarantee that the SINR performance improves in each iteration step. Numerical results show that the proposed methods have better SINR performance than existing design methods

    Detection Strategies and Intercept Metrics for Intra-Pulse Radar-Embedded Communications

    This thesis presents various detection strategies and intercept metrics to evaluate and design an intra-pulse radar-embedded communication system. This system embeds covert communication symbols in masking interference provided by the reflections of a pulsed radar emission. This thesis considers the case where the communicating device is a transponder or tag present in an area that is illuminated by a radar. The radar is considered to be the communication receiver. As with any communication system, performance (as measured by reliability and data rate) should be maximized between the tag and radar. However, unlike conventional communication systems, the symbols here should also have a low-probability of intercept (LPI). This thesis examines the trade-offs associated with the design of a practical radar-embedded communication system. A diagonally-loaded decorrelating receiver is developed and enhanced with a second stage based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion. For a practical system, the communication symbols will likely encounter multipath. The tag may then use a pre-distortion strategy known as time-reversal to improve the signal-to-noise ratio at the radar receiver thereby enhancing communication performance. The development of several intercept metrics are shown and the logic behind the design evolutions are explained. A formal analysis of the processing gain by the desired receiver relative to the intercept receivers is given. Finally, simulations are shown for all cases, to validate the design metrics

    Adaptive Interference Removal for Un-coordinated Radar/Communication Co-existence

    Most existing approaches to co-existing communication/radar systems assume that the radar and communication systems are coordinated, i.e., they share information, such as relative position, transmitted waveforms and channel state. In this paper, we consider an un-coordinated scenario where a communication receiver is to operate in the presence of a number of radars, of which only a sub-set may be active, which poses the problem of estimating the active waveforms and the relevant parameters thereof, so as to cancel them prior to demodulation. Two algorithms are proposed for such a joint waveform estimation/data demodulation problem, both exploiting sparsity of a proper representation of the interference and of the vector containing the errors of the data block, so as to implement an iterative joint interference removal/data demodulation process. The former algorithm is based on classical on-grid compressed sensing (CS), while the latter forces an atomic norm (AN) constraint: in both cases the radar parameters and the communication demodulation errors can be estimated by solving a convex problem. We also propose a way to improve the efficiency of the AN-based algorithm. The performance of these algorithms are demonstrated through extensive simulations, taking into account a variety of conditions concerning both the interferers and the respective channel states

    Passive radar on moving platforms exploiting DVB-T transmitters of opportunity

    The work, effort, and research put into passive radar for stationary receivers have shown significant developments and progress in recent years. The next challenge is mounting a passive radar on moving platforms for the purpose of target detection and ground imaging, e.g. for covert border control. A passive radar on a moving platform has many advantages and offers many benefits, however there is also a considerable drawback that has limited its application so far. Due to the movement the clutter returns are spread in Doppler and may overlap moving targets, which are then difficult to detect. While this problem is common for an active radar as well, with a passive radar a further problem arises: It is impossible to control the exploited time-varying waveform emitted from a telecommunication transmitter. A conventional processing approach is ineffective as the time-varying waveform leads to residuals all over the processed data. Therefore a dedicated clutter cancellation method, e.g. the displaced phase centre antenna (DPCA) approach, does not have the ability to completely remove the clutter, so that target detection is considerably limited. The aim must be therefore to overcome this limitation by exploiting a processing technique, which is able to remove these residuals in order to cope with the clutter returns thus making target detection feasible. The findings of this research and thesis show that a reciprocal filtering based stage is able to provide a time-invariant impulse response similar to the transmissions of an active radar. Due to this benefit it is possible to achieve an overall complete clutter removal together with a dedicated DPCA stage, so that moving target detection is considerably improved, making it possible in the first place. Based on mathematical analysis and on simulations it is proven, that by exploiting this processing in principle an infinite clutter cancellation can be achieved. This result shows that the reciprocal filter is an essential processing stage. Applications on real data acquired from two different measurement campaigns prove these results. By the proposed approach, the limiting factor (i.e. the time-varying waveform) for target detection is negotiated, and in principle any clutter cancellation technique known from active radar can be applied. Therefore this analysis and the results provide a substantial contribution to the passive radar research community and enables it to address the next questions

    Proposed ontology for cognitive radar systems

    Cognitive radar is a rapidly developing area of research with many opportunities for innovation. A significant obstacle to development in this discipline is the absence of a common understanding of what constitutes a cognitive radar. The proposition in this study is that radar systems should not be classed as cognitive, or not cognitive, but should be graded by the degree of cognition exhibited. The authors introduce a new taxonomy framework for cognitive radar against which research, experimental and production systems can be benchmarked, enabling clear communication regarding the level of cognition being discussed

    An FPGA-based 77 GHzs RADAR signal processing system for automotive collision avoidance

    An FPGA implementable Verilog HDL based signal processing algorithm has been developed to detect the range and velocity of target vehicles using a MEMS based 77 GHz LFMCW long range automotive radar. The algorithm generates a tuning voltage to control a GaAs based VCO to produce a triangular chirp signal, controls the operation of MEMS components, and finally processes the IF signal to determine the range and veolicty of the detected targets. The Verilog HDL code has been developed targeting the Xilinx Virtex-5 SX50T FPGA. The developed algorithm enables the MEMS radar to detect 24 targets in an optimum timespan of 6.42 ms in the range of 0.4 to 200 m with a range resolution of 0.19 m and a maximum range error 0.25 m. A maximum relative velocity of ±300 km/h can be determined with a velocity resolution in HDL of 0.95 m/s and a maximum velocity error of 0.83 m/s with a sweep duration of 1 ms
