Pattern Reification as the Basis for Description-Driven Systems

One of the main factors driving object-oriented software development for information systems is the requirement for systems to be tolerant to change. To address this issue in designing systems, this paper proposes a pattern-based, object-oriented, description-driven system (DDS) architecture as an extension to the standard UML four-layer meta-model. A DDS architecture is proposed in which aspects of both static and dynamic systems behavior can be captured via descriptive models and meta-models. The proposed architecture embodies four main elements - firstly, the adoption of a multi-layered meta-modeling architecture and reflective meta-level architecture, secondly the identification of four data modeling relationships that can be made explicit such that they can be modified dynamically, thirdly the identification of five design patterns which have emerged from practice and have proved essential in providing reusable building blocks for data management, and fourthly the encoding of the structural properties of the five design patterns by means of one fundamental pattern, the Graph pattern. A practical example of this philosophy, the CRISTAL project, is used to demonstrate the use of description-driven data objects to handle system evolution.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure

Information accessibility has become easier and can be improved by using web-based application. The aim of this project is to identify a requirement model of web-based reminder system. This system is an assistant tool for international students to remind them especially when they forget renews their visa at the time. It applies knowledge base and web base application in order to add element such as user friendly, usefulness, pleasing and informative. This prototype has been developed using general methodology of design research, Object-oriented approach focusing on Unified Modeling Language notation. The development of this prototype starts with analysis phase and ended with testing and evaluation. This project discusses some findings, problem encountered and limitation of the project's development. Finally, brief recommendation given as contribution to the future development

Smart toys designed for detecting developmental delays

    Get PDF
In this paper,we describe the design considerations and implementation of a smart toy system,a technology for supporting the automatic recording and analysis for detecting developmental delays recognition when children play using the smart toy. To achieve this goal,we take advantage of the current commercial sensor features (reliability, low consumption, easy integration, etc.) to develop a series of sensor-based low-cost devices. Specifically, our prototype system consists of a tower of cubes augmented with wireless sensing capabilities and a mobile computing platform that collect the information sent from the cubes allowing the later analysis by childhood development professionals in order to verify a normal behaviour or to detect a potential disorder. This paper presents the requirements of the toy and discusses our choices in toy design, technology used, selected sensors, process to gather data from the sensors and generate information that will help in the decision-making and communication of the information to the collector system. In addition,we also describe the play activities the system supportsAuthors would like to thank the National Programme for Research, Development and Innovation, oriented to Societal Challenges, of the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness that supported the results of this paper through EDUCERE project (TIN2013-47803-C2-2-R), and to Universidad de Alcala that supported them through EDUSENS project (CCG2014/EXP-008

Requirement Model for Learning Management System in Dell

    Get PDF
This project aims to create a requirement model of learning management system (LMS) that enables online learning management in Dell Asia Pacific. Project methology would use the system development lifecycle, which consists of initial study or planning phase, system analysis phase, system design phase, development phase and testing/evaluation phase. The system was developed using object-oriented approach, which used Unified Modeling Language (UML) as a modeling tool. The requirement model consists of use case diagram, use case specification, class diagram, sequence diagram, collaboration diagram, state/activity diagram, deployment diagram and supporting textual information. Test and evaluation has been conducted to test and validate interfaces satisfaction of the requirement model. Ten users from company's training department have been selected to participate in the test and evaluation phase. Overall evaluation results show that this requirement model meets the learning management in term of company perspectives

Perancangan Aplikasi Monitoring Penerimaan dan Pelaksanaan Proyek Berbasis Web dengan Metode Prototyping pada PT. Fas Jawara

The rapid development of today\u27s tehnology makes itu possible to tranform a manual system to a computerized system. And it can also be applied to PT.Fas jawara who is still using manual system in recording the receipt of the project, work order making, news making events and invoices. Monitoring the implementation of information systems PT.Fas Jawara can provide benefits that such work would be more effective and efficient. Methodolody of data collection and analysis using theoretical analyzes and acceptance of information systems in general and monitoring projects are running. And inteviews with the company concerned to find out the problems and to investigate the acceptance of business process projects, making work order, create invoices and news system that runs the show. For the analysis and design of information system is using with the object oriented approach where evertything is described in the notation. At least the acceptance of information system and monitoring can runs as excected and allows users to appl

    Information systems for development planning

    Get PDF
In this paper the changing approaches to development planning are described, from the economic-growth oriented strategies of the 1950s and the 1960s to the contemporary emphasis on alleviating poverty and meeting basic needs. The process of development planning includes several phases; the identification of aims, analysis, plan formulation and detailed design, Implementation, controls, updating, and feedback and adjustment. This process has become much more sophisticated in recent years, but in general, the comprehensiveness and refinement of a development plan depends on the type and scope of the data available. At the same time, the very process of planning may reveal deficiencies In data and thus act as an incentive to improved information gathering. Three information systems are needed for development planning: a resources information system, whose importance has been recognised for some time but which has frequently consisted of a series of isolated and uncoordinated inventories and studies; a scientific and technological information system' and a management information system, whose Importance has frequently been neglected. Information in these areas must be collected, communicated to government policy makers and administrators to meet their immediate needs, and stored in a convenient and coordinated form so that it will be accessible in the future. More global surveys and inventories will be needed during the eiarly stages of development planning, and detailed project and programme surveys will be needed during the design and implementation stages

A Multidimensional and Visual Exploration Approach to Project Portfolio Management

    Get PDF
Managing projects in an organization, especially a project-oriented organization, is a challenging task. Project data has a large volume and is complex to manage. It is different from managing a single project, because one needs to integrate and synthesize information from multiple projects and multiple perspectives for high-level strategic business decisions, such as aligning projects with business objectives, balancing investment and expected return, and allocating resources. Current methods and tools either do not well integrate multiple aspects or are not intuitive and easy to use for managers and executives. In this dissertation project, a multidimensional and visual exploration approach was designed and evaluated to provide a unique and intuitive option to support decision making in project portfolio management. The research followed a general design science research methodology involving phases of awareness of problem, suggestion, development, evaluation and conclusion. The approach was implemented into a software system using a prototyping method and was evaluated through user interviews. The evaluation result demonstrates the utility and ease-of-use of the approach, and confirms design objectives. The research brings a new perspective and provides a new decision support tool for project portfolio management. It also contributes to the design knowledge of visual exploration systems for business portfolio management by theorizing the system

    Online Homestay Reservation System (OHRS)

Aims of this project are to study the needs of Homestay and to develop a prototype model for Homestay reservation process. This prototype will help the reservation process for the customer and also for the coordinator of the Homestay. By developing this project, it will help the coordinator to accelerate their business information properly either directly or indirectly. The development of this project also brings a big impact to the Homestay industries, where they can start promote their Homestay in an interactive ways. In addition the Object-Oriented System Analysis and Design are use as a methodology to develop the prototype. It is important to follow the step of the methodology to ensure the process of developing the prototype went smooth and the objectives of this project are achieved
