Scholarly attention for Old Javanese literature so far has mainly focused on poetry. The apparently simple nature of narrative prose texts, while making them excellent sources for linguistic and lexicographic research, at the same time denies them any literary value. In this article an impression is given of the art of storytelling in one Old Javanese prose story, taken from the Adiparwa of around A.D. 1000. Quite unexpectedly, a sophisticated tradition unfolds in which a rich variety of devices enables the storyteller to create a meaningful world of words

Making meaning in muddy waters: representing complexity through community based storytelling

Internationally, storytelling has been used with many diverse communities. This paper compares the use of storytelling as a participatory art form within a community development project and a community and healthy living centre in the United Kingdom. Both the project and the centre regard storytelling activities as ‘inclusionary’ forms of intervention. However, the discourse of social inclusion rarely acknowledges the subtle psychosocial processes that are involved in participatory storytelling. This paper discusses such processes and examines some methodological implications of researching storytelling. It asks what contribution storytelling can make towards authentic representation of individual and community voices

This thesis addresses what storytelling is and how it is being used in museums today. It studies the essential components that lead to successful storytelling campaigns, including online initiatives. This thesis also describes how museums illustrate their mission through storytelling by showing how they bring communities together. This thesis examines the leading institutions in storytelling today: the Delaware Art Museum, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, the Asian Art Museum, and the Monmouth Museum. I am curious how a snapshot captures a moment that can trigger a memory and release a tale. My project will be to create a series of digital images and their stories that trace my case study’s life over his eighty years. Through Jim’s archive images I will select photos of his life, show them to him and record stories from his memories. Jim’s self narrative will be my digital storytelling project created to evoke a time and place linking the past into the present. My work is about storytelling through archive photos. This art form has evolved over time with the landscape of computerisation. Our private images and stories are now being shared across public digital media platforms. Once Upon Our Time: The Ancient Art of Storytelling in a Contemporary West Africa

Storytelling is an art form that has been flourishing in Senegal since the country’s origin. Traditionally, storytelling was a communal endeavor, oral and interactive. As modernity crept up on Senegal storytelling began to change, oral tradition only partially surviving in rural settings, almost completely obsolete in big cities. I am particularly interested in how Wolof tales and oral storytelling are surviving in a modernizing Senegal. I think that storytelling is a form of cultural education for children and adults alike, and that preservation is dire for the survival of this art. I will discuss story structure, content and the opinions of local storytellers in the form of a podcast. Through examining these topics, I will be revealing how important storytelling is to Senegalese culture, and exemplifying the necessity of cultural preservation via transcription
