Albert Bloch and the Blue Rider: The Munich Years

    Get PDF
This is the online version of the book; the images of Albert Bloch’s paintings are included only in the printed edition. The printed edition is available from Jayhawk Ink at http://www.kubookstore.com/p-126860-albert-bloch-and-the-blue-rider-munich-years.aspxAlbert Bloch, together with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, participated in one of the most significant art shows of the twentieth century, the Blue Rider exhibition of Munich in 1911–1912. Subsequently this American artist from St. Louis also exhibited with Paul Klee. During the decade from 1910 to 1920 Bloch contributed to at least forty European exhibitions. The present publication provides an overview of this period of Bloch’s career. Thanks to an original photographic record of 140 paintings from that period, we are able to recover the evolution of his art in the context of a most innovative period of modern art

In the printed edition of Volume 20, p. 162, Mitchell A. Nicholls’ article ‘The Lack of a Theology Hood at the University of the West Indies’ erred in spelling out the degree BCL. The present digital edition corresponds to the 15th volume of our annual magazine Guidance and Society. For now we don’t count with the printed edition due to economic reasons, but we are managing to solve these problems. Our editorial venture is costly mainly because the papers are presented in two languages (Spanish and English) and we also include abstracts in Portuguese.Facultad de Psicologí

A constituency of fearful white voters has become central to the right-wing political discourse, leading to the tolerance of ‘banal’ racism

Last week Bart Cammaerts was asked by the North Belgian broadsheet newspaper De Standaard to write an opinion piece regarding the debate on race, language and political correctness in the UK (the piece was published in the printed edition of 13 May 2014). What follows is a slightly edited translation of what he wrote in which he condemns politicians, such as David Cameron and Boris Johnson, for condemning those that react against racism more than those who use racist language. He suggests this acceptance of ‘banal’ racism definitely has something to do with the growing success of UKIP

Probing the IGM/Galaxy Connection IV: The LCO/WFCCD Galaxy Survey of 20 Fields Surrounding UV Bright Quasars

We publish the survey for galaxies in 20 fields containing ultraviolet bright quasars (with z_em 0.1 to 0.5) that can be used to study the association between galaxies and absorption systems from the low-z intergalactic medium (IGM). The survey is magnitude limited (R~19.5 mag) and highly complete out to 10' from the quasar in each field. It was designed to detect dwarf galaxies (L ~ 0.1 L*) at an impact parameter rho 1Mpc (z=0.1) from a quasar. The complete sample (all 20 fields) includes R-band photometry for 84718 sources and confirmed redshifts for 2800 sources. This includes 1198 galaxies with 0.005 < z < (z_em - 0.01) at a median redshift of 0.18, which may associated with IGM absorption lines. All of the imaging was acquired with cameras on the Swope 40" telescope and the spectra were obtained via slitmask observations using the WFCCD spectrograph on the Dupont 100" telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO). This paper describes the data reduction, imaging analysis, photometry, and spectral analysis of the survey. We tabulate the principal measurements for all sources in each field and provide the spectroscopic dataset online.Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Supplements; 20 pages, only 6 figures shown in this version. UID/EAT/00693/2013Giuseppe Millico, best known in his time as a castrato singer and to posterity for his connections with Christoph Gluck, was also a composer of songs and dramatic works. This article traces the career of one of the lat- ter, the pastoral drama La pietà d’amore. It was first performed in Naples in 1782, where, unusually, it was also pub- lished. It subsequently came to be staged in Lisbon, the following year, and at the Ópera Nova Theatre, Rio to Janeiro, probably in 1786. In addition, certain aspects of the preface to the printed edition are considered, as well as manu- script scores and libretti relating to the known productions.publishersversionpublishe
