Software defined networking for wireless sensor networks: a survey

    Get PDF
One main feature of Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the basic principle of decoupling a device’s control plane from its data plane. This simplifies network management and gives network administrators a remarkable control over the network elements. As the control plane for each device within the network is now implemented on a separate controller, this reliefs individual devices from the overhead caused by complex routing. Specifically, this feature has been shown to be extremely beneficial in the case of resource-constrained Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). By keeping the control logic away from the low-powered nodes, the WSNs can resolve their major issues of resource underutilisation and counter-productivity. This paper highlights the importance of adopting the SDN in the WSNs as a relatively new networking paradigm. This is introduced through a comprehensive survey on relevant networking paradigms and protocols supported by a critical evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of these mechanisms. Furthermore, open research issues and challenges are pointed out shedding a light on future innovations in this field

State regulation of the IoT in the Russian Federation: Fundamentals and challenges

The purpose of this section is to study the problems with implementing technical and legal regulations for the development of public administration functions in the Russian Federation when using the internet of things (IoT). The introduction is based on an analysis of regulatory legal acts and presents the main strategic directions for the development of public administration functions in the Russian federation when using IoT. State reports, scientific literature, a system of technical and legal regulation are analyzed, and the main problems of implementing the IoT that impede the achievement of effective public administration are studied. The Russian practice of using IoT in various economic areas is investigated. Based on an analysis of the mechanisms for ensuring data safety of information technology users in the Russian federation, problems were investigated, such as the collecting data through IoT, including publicly available personal data in order to profile human activities, and creating of a digital twin of a person. The social constraints for introducing distributed registry technologies are users' distrust in the field of data privacy protection and mathematical algorithms that are used to establish trust in a digital environment instead of trusted centralized intermediaries; these problems were also analyzed. The Russian approach was analyzed in comparison to European experience in this field. To ensure information security and the possibility of its distribution, the IoT is revealed

Virtual network embedding for wireless sensor networks time efficient QoS/QoI aware approach

    Get PDF
A recent trend in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is Network Virtualization to support on-demand sharing of sensing functionality. The efficient allocation of WSN resources to sensing requests is obtained using Virtual Network Embedding (VNE). This must take into account Quality of Service -QoS (e.g. reliability), Quality of Information -QoI (e.g sensing accuracy), and deal with wireless interference. With increased computational complexity due to the added constraints, finding an optimal solution can be prohibitive at scale. We developed an offline embedding algorithm that searches through all possible embeddings, which allowed us to explore the trade-off between solution quality and search time. We identify a defined set of initial processing steps that lead to high quality solutions (within 10% of best solution) in bounded time. We evaluated the algorithm under high stress (large networks with long paths, high data rates, beyond typical WSN configuration) to understand its limitations and the limitations imposed by the underlying WSN substrate

Design and Fabrication Techniques of Devices for Embedded Power Active Contact Lens

    Get PDF
This thesis designed and fabricated various devices that were interfaced to an IC for an active contact lens that notifies the user of an event by detection of an external wireless signal. The contact lens consisted of an embedded antenna providing communication with a 2.4GHz system, as well as inductive charging at an operating frequency of 13.56 MHz. The lens utilized a CBC005 5µAh thin film battery by Cymbet and a manufactured graphene super capacitor as a power source. The custom integrated circuit (IC) was designed using the On Semiconductor CMOS C5 0.6 µm process to manage the battery and drive the display. A transparent, flexible, single cell display was developed utilizing electrochromic ink to indicate to the user of an event. Assembly of the components, encapsulation, and molding were implemented to create the final product. The material properties of the chosen substrate were analyzed for their clearness, flexibility, and biocompatibility to determine its suitability as a contact lens material. Finally, the two different fabrication techniques (microfabrication and screen printing) that were employed to make the devices are compared to determine the favorable process for each part of the system

    Wave Propagation

A wave is one of the basic physics phenomena observed by mankind since ancient time. The wave is also one of the most-studied physics phenomena that can be well described by mathematics. The study may be the best illustration of what is “science”, which approximates the laws of nature by using human defined symbols, operators, and languages. Having a good understanding of waves and wave propagation can help us to improve the quality of life and provide a pathway for future explorations of the nature and universe. This book introduces some exciting applications and theories to those who have general interests in waves and wave propagations, and provides insights and references to those who are specialized in the areas presented in the book
