    “What if There's Something Wrong with Her?”‐How Biomedical Technologies Contribute to Epistemic Injustice in Healthcare

    While there is a steadily growing literature on epistemic injustice in healthcare, there are few discussions of the role that biomedical technologies play in harming patients in their capacity as knowers. Through an analysis of newborn and pediatric genetic and genomic sequencing technologies (GSTs), I argue that biomedical technologies can lead to epistemic injustice through two primary pathways: epistemic capture and value partitioning. I close by discussing the larger ethical and political context of critical analyses of GSTs and their broader implications for just and equitable healthcare delivery

    The Logic of Quantum Mechanics Derived from Classical General Relativity

    For the first time it is shown that the logic of quantum mechanics can be derived from Classical Physics. An orthomodular lattice of propositions, characteristic of quantum logic, is constructed for manifolds in Einstein's theory of general relativity. A particle is modelled by a topologically non-trivial 4-manifold with closed timelike curves - a 4-geon, rather than as an evolving 3-manifold. It is then possible for both the state preparation and measurement apparatus to constrain the results of experiments. It is shown that propositions about the results of measurements can satisfy a non-distributive logic rather than the Boolean logic of classical systems. Reasonable assumptions about the role of the measurement apparatus leads to an orthomodular lattice of propositions characteristic of quantum logic.Comment: 16 pages Late

    The purpose of this paper is, first, to investigate the interconnections of substantive freedoms, which are indispensable for every individual to “lead the kind of lives they have reason to value” (Sen, 1999b, p.10,18), and which have legitimate and ethical reasons to be publicly secured, second, to investigate a conception of public-provision unit that embodies “the right to well-being freedom”, and a conception of decision-making unit that corresponds to it, based on the perspective of Sen’s capability theory and its extension, comparing with that of Rawls’ Theory of Justice and A Law of People. If we intend to construct such a public-provision unit, which conducts redistribution as a whole, and which receives every individual who cannot belong to any fixed local group, what kind of a body should we assume as a public-provision unit? And further, what kind of a body should we assume as a decision-making unit, which is responsible for deciding or revising the basic conceptions of public provision unit

    Examining Generational Differences across Organizational Factors that Relate to Turnover

    Turnover continues to pose a problem for all organizations across industries. This study examines the complex nature of turnover, by examining the relationship of turnover intentions with perceptions of distributive justice, procedural justice, growth opportunities, and recognition across age groups. Age groups will be used as a proxy for generational cohort membership. Results of the study confirm previous research that generational differences do exist; however, those differences are fairly small. Perceptions of distributive justice, procedural justice, growth opportunities, and recognition were found to be significant predictors of turnover intentions regardless of the age group

    A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems

    Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past, present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing. The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page

    How To Do Things With Hohfeld

    Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld’s 1913 article, Fundamental Legal Conceptions as Applied in Judicial Reasoning, is widely viewed as brilliant. A thrilling read, it is not. More like chewing on sawdust. The arguments are dense, the examples unfriendly, and the prose turgid. “How to Do Things With Hohfeld” is an effort to provide an accessible and sawdust-free account of Hohfeld’s article, as well as to show how and why his analysis of “legal relations” (e.g., right/duty, etc.) matters. Perhaps the principal reason is that the analysis furnishes a discriminating platform to discern the economic and political import of legal rules and legal regimes. My project here is to offer a forward-leaning interpretation of Hohfeld — to show how and why his insights remain highly relevant today. The article engages with the jural relations, decomposition and recomposition, the bundle of relations, the critique of reification, and recent discussions in property theory as well as the “New Private Law.” I am keen on protecting Hohfeld’s platform from some (legal realist) over-extensions as well as showing how the views of the “Hohfeld critics” are in many ways consonant with Hohfeld’s own thinking. The article closes with some questions about the limitations of Hohfeld’s approach

    The Kvarken Ferry Link is a maritime transport connection between Sweden and Finland. This report is a deliverable from the Centre for Regional Science (CERUM) at Umeå University to the Midway Alignment project. The purpose of the report is to analyse the freight demand for the ferry by estimating the maximum potential freight transport in the catchment area of the ferry. The analysis is based on a model analysis of the maximum potential freight volumes in the catchment area of the ferry across the Kvarken strait using input data from the Swedish national freight modelling system Samgods. The results are combined with a scenario analysis where the effect of different forecasts for the Kvarken ferry is studied. The analysis might serve as an input in a subsequent analysis of the market potential and transport demand for the ferry link between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden.The Midway Alignment of the Bothnian Corridor is co-financed by the European Union.     Toward Entity-Aware Search

    As the Web has evolved into a data-rich repository, with the standard "page view," current search engines are becoming increasingly inadequate for a wide range of query tasks. While we often search for various data "entities" (e.g., phone number, paper PDF, date), today's engines only take us indirectly to pages. In my Ph.D. study, we focus on a novel type of Web search that is aware of data entities inside pages, a significant departure from traditional document retrieval. We study the various essential aspects of supporting entity-aware Web search. To begin with, we tackle the core challenge of ranking entities, by distilling its underlying conceptual model Impression Model and developing a probabilistic ranking framework, EntityRank, that is able to seamlessly integrate both local and global information in ranking. We also report a prototype system built to show the initial promise of the proposal. Then, we aim at distilling and abstracting the essential computation requirements of entity search. From the dual views of reasoning--entity as input and entity as output, we propose a dual-inversion framework, with two indexing and partition schemes, towards efficient and scalable query processing. Further, to recognize more entity instances, we study the problem of entity synonym discovery through mining query log data. The results we obtained so far have shown clear promise of entity-aware search, in its usefulness, effectiveness, efficiency and scalability

    The development of multiplicative thinking and proportional reasoning: Models of conceptual learning and transfer

    This thesis considers the development of multiplicative thinking and proportional reasoning from two perspectives. Firstly, it examines the research literature on progressions in conceptual understanding to create a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). Secondly, it surveys modern views of how transfer by learners occurs in and between situations, contrasting object views of abstraction with knowledge in pieces views. Case studies of six students aged 11-13 years illustrate conceptual changes that occur during the course of a school year. The students are involved in a design experiment in which I (the researcher) co-teach with the classroom teacher. The students represent a mix of gender, ethnicity and level of achievement. Comparison of the HLT with the actual learning trajectory for each student establishes its validity as a generic growth path. Examination of the data suggests that two models of learning and by inference, transfer, describe the conceptual development of the students. There is consideration of students’ use of anticipated actions on physical and imaged embodiments as objects of thought with a focus on the significance of object creation for conceptual growth, and the encapsulation, completeness and contextual detachment of objects. There is broad consistency in students’ progress through the phases of the HTL within each sub-construct though the developmental patterns of individual are variable and temporal alignment across the sub-constructs does not uniformly hold. Some consistency of order effect in concept development is noted. Discussion on the limitations of the HTL includes the difference between knowledge types from a pedagogical perspective, absence of significant model-representation-situation transfer, and order relations in conceptual development. Considerable situational variation occurs as students solve problems that involve applications of the same concepts. Partial construction of concepts is common. This was true of all learners, irrespective of level of achievement. High-achieving students more readily anticipate actions and trust these anticipations as objects of thought than middle and low achievers. The data supports knowledge in pieces views of conceptual development. Complexity for learners in observing affordances in situations, and in co-ordinating the fine-grained knowledge required, explains the difficulty of transfer. While supporting the anticipation of action as significant from a learning perspective the research suggests that expertise in applying concepts involves a process of noticing similarity across contextually bound situations and cueing appropriate knowledge resources
