Unambiguous Turn Position and Rational Trace Languages
We show the existence of rational trace languages defined over direct products of free monoids that have inherent ambiguity of the order of log n and n 1/2 . This result is obtained by studying the relationship between trace languages and linear context-free grammars that satisfy a special unambiguity condition on the position of the last step of derivation
26. Theorietag Automaten und Formale Sprachen 23. Jahrestagung Logik in der Informatik: Tagungsband
Der Theorietag ist die Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Automaten und Formale Sprachen der Gesellschaft für Informatik und fand erstmals 1991 in Magdeburg statt. Seit dem Jahr 1996 wird der Theorietag von einem eintägigen Workshop mit eingeladenen Vorträgen begleitet. Die Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Logik in der Informatik der Gesellschaft für Informatik fand erstmals 1993 in Leipzig statt. Im Laufe beider Jahrestagungen finden auch die jährliche Fachgruppensitzungen statt. In diesem Jahr wird der Theorietag der Fachgruppe Automaten und Formale Sprachen erstmalig zusammen mit der Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe Logik in der Informatik abgehalten. Organisiert wurde die gemeinsame Veranstaltung von der Arbeitsgruppe Zuverlässige Systeme des Instituts für Informatik an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel vom 4. bis 7. Oktober im Tagungshotel Tannenfelde bei Neumünster. Während des Tre↵ens wird ein Workshop für alle Interessierten statt finden. In Tannenfelde werden • Christoph Löding (Aachen) • Tomás Masopust (Dresden) • Henning Schnoor (Kiel) • Nicole Schweikardt (Berlin) • Georg Zetzsche (Paris) eingeladene Vorträge zu ihrer aktuellen Arbeit halten. Darüber hinaus werden 26 Vorträge von Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen gehalten, 17 auf dem Theorietag Automaten und formale Sprachen und neun auf der Jahrestagung Logik in der Informatik. Der vorliegende Band enthält Kurzfassungen aller Beiträge. Wir danken der Gesellschaft für Informatik, der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel und dem Tagungshotel Tannenfelde für die Unterstützung dieses Theorietags. Linearly bounded infinite graphs
Linearly bounded Turing machines have been mainly studied as acceptors for
context-sensitive languages. We define a natural class of infinite automata
representing their observable computational behavior, called linearly bounded
graphs. These automata naturally accept the same languages as the linearly
bounded machines defining them. We present some of their structural properties
as well as alternative characterizations in terms of rewriting systems and
context-sensitive transductions. Finally, we compare these graphs to rational
graphs, which are another class of automata accepting the context-sensitive
languages, and prove that in the bounded-degree case, rational graphs are a
strict sub-class of linearly bounded graphs

Behavioural Preorders on Stochastic Systems - Logical, Topological, and Computational Aspects
Computer systems can be found everywhere: in space, in our homes, in our
cars, in our pockets, and sometimes even in our own bodies. For concerns of
safety, economy, and convenience, it is important that such systems work
correctly. However, it is a notoriously difficult task to ensure that the
software running on computers behaves correctly.
One approach to ease this task is that of model checking, where a model of
the system is made using some mathematical formalism. Requirements expressed in
a formal language can then be verified against the model in order to give
guarantees that the model satisfies the requirements.
For many computer systems, time is an important factor. As such, we need our
formalisms and requirement languages to be able to incorporate real time.
We therefore develop formalisms and algorithms that allow us to compare and
express properties about real-time systems. We first introduce a logical
formalism for reasoning about upper and lower bounds on time, and study the
properties of this formalism, including axiomatisation and algorithms for
checking when a formula is satisfied.
We then consider the question of when a system is faster than another system.
We show that this is a difficult question which can not be answered in general,
but we identify special cases where this question can be answered. We also show
that under this notion of faster-than, a local increase in speed may lead to a
global decrease in speed, and we take step towards avoiding this.
Finally, we consider how to compare the real-time behaviour of systems not
just qualitatively, but also quantitatively. Thus, we are interested in knowing
how much one system is faster or slower than another system. This is done by
introducing a distance between systems. We show how to compute this distance
