An Assessment of Subject coverage of Scientometrics from 2001 to 2010
The study has categorised 1241 articles into research and non-research articles, for analysing subject coverage, publication trend and prolific author of the journal Scientrometrics from the period 2001 to 2010. All articles were classified under 22 subjects using non-parametric method. The study found a sharp positive growth in research articles over the period while a negative growth has been observed in non-research articles only. Most of the research articles were devoted to Bibliometric Study, Citation Studies, Research Output, Collaboration Analysis, while the major topic for non-research articles were Bibliometric study, patent analysis, statistics and research assessment over the period. The most prolific author of the period (2001-2010) was Glanzel, W. (Wolfgang GlÃĪnzel, Katholieke University Leuven, Belgium)
Themes in Health Sciences Librarianship Literature, 2016-2020: A Keyword and Subject Analysis
Previous investigations into trends in Library and Information Science (LIS) literature have revealed changes in the topics librarians publish on over time, with older studies highlighting classification and indexing, and information retrieval and more recent studies highlighting keywords such as internet, information technology, digital libraries, and again, information retrieval. No similar investigation has been conducted on current publication trends by health sciences librarians. This study analyzes the top themes on which health sciences librarians published from 2016 to 2020 by examining the frequency of keywords. Keywords and subject headings were analyzed from The Journal of the Medical Library Association, Medical References Services Quarterly, The Journal of Hospital Librarianship, and The Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries. A total of 8,806 keywords were downloaded for analysis and organized into 292 categories during taxonomy creation. The ten most frequent themes were: libraries, information, education, humans, demography, librarian, geographical locations, research, electronic resources, and technology. The study also found that data, psychiatry and psychology, informatics, and publishing were other key themes, indicating that health sciences librarians are publishing on a wide range of topics. Some keywords that appeared only once, such as telecommuting and flexible staffing, suggest emerging areas of research for librarians
Qualitative trends in library & information science (LIS) research
Background
Over the past two decades, theorists have noted an increase in the use of qualitative
research methods within library and information science (LIS). However, no recent study
has sought to provide rigorous evidence of this increase. This ongoing study seeks to
address two research questions:
1. How widespread is the use of qualitative data collection and analysis methods in the
recent LIS research literature?
2. What are some common themes and trends within the body of recent LIS studies that
have used qualitative methods?
Data Collection
The researchers mined the Web of Science database for abstracts from the top four LIS
research journals for the period 2001-2006. Next, they designed an automated program
to search the resulting pool of abstracts for set of 14 keywords. Manual analysis was then
used to remove false drops.
Data Analysis
The study includes two data analysis stages. For Stage 1, the researchers used statistical
methods to generate a quantitative snapshot of the data. The study is currently in Stage 2,
which entails the use of qualitative data analysis techniques to search for themes and
patterns within the pool of abstracts.
Expected Findings
The quantitative results will provide concrete evidence of the frequency of qualitative
research methods within these top-ranked LIS research journals. The qualitative analysis
will point to possible trends within LIS studies that use qualitative methods, such as
dominant data collection or data analysis methods. Together, these results will help to
provide a better understanding of the current face of LIS research
Methodological Choices For Research In Information Science: Contributions To Domain Analysis
The article focuses on the ways of organizing studies according to their methodological choices in the Base Referencial de Artigos de PeriÃģdicos em CiÊncia da InformaçÃĢo (Reference Database of Journal articles in Information Science). We highlight how the organization of scientific production by the methodological choices in Information Science contributes to the identification of its production features and domain analysis. We studied research categories and proposed five classification criteria: research purposes, approaches, focus, techniques and type of analysis. The proposal of a corpus in Information Science is empirically applied, represented by 689 articles, 10% of the production indexed in Base Referencial de Artigos de PeriÃģdicos em CiÊncia da InformaçÃĢo from 1972 to 2010. We adopt content analysis to interpret the methodological choices of authors identified in the corpus. The results point out that exploratory studies are more predominant when considering the research purpose; regarding the research approach, bibliographic and documentary studies are more predominant; systematic observation, questionnaire and interview were the most widely used techniques; document analysis and content analysis are the most widely used types of analysis; the research focus of theoretical, historical and bibliometric studies are more predominant. We found that some studies use two methodological choices and explicit epistemological approaches, such as the studies following the positivist approach in the 1970s, and those influenced by the phenomenological approach in the 1980s, which increased the use of methods in qualitative research.28151
Developing an undergraduate information studies curriculum in support of social justice
Through a review of the current state of Library and Information Studies (LIS) undergraduate education and the orientation of sample programs at consortium member iSchools, this article proposes an alternative pedagogical model that foregrounds the integration of a critical, social justice framework into undergraduate curricula. Based on an initial study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) by the authors and other participants of the Winter/Spring 2015 Teacher Training Seminar, this essay, in addition to positing an approach towards the building of critically engaged undergraduate curriculum, moreover highlights the increasing need and support for LIS students and professionals that have a nuanced information praxis. Inspired by UCLAâs own commitment to a social justice orientation, the authors also point towards existing advocacy for social justice in LIS undergraduate education in the field and professional literature. In turn, underscoring the broader movement for a critical education and practice within LIS
