    Application specific asynchronous microgengines for efficient high-level control

    technical reportDespite the growing interest in asynchronous circuits, programmable asynchronous controllers based on the idea of microprogramming have not been actively pursued. Since programmable control is widely used in many commercial ASICs to allow late correction of design errors, to easily upgrade product families, to meet the time to market, and even effect run-time modifications to control in adaptive systems, we consider it crucial that self-timed techniques support efficient programmable control. This is especially true given that asynchronous (self-timed) circuits are well suited for realizing reactive and control-intensive designs. We offer a practical solution to programmable asynchronous control in the form of application-specific micro-programmed asynchronous controllers (or microengines). The features of our solution include a modular and easily extensible datapath structure, support for two main styles of handshaking (namely two-phase and four-phase), and many efficiency measures based on exploiting concurrency between operations and employing efficient circuit structures. Our results demonstrate that the proposed microengine can yield high performance?in fact performance close to that offered by automated high-level synthesis tools targeting custom hard-wired burstmode machines

    Architectural synthesis of timed asynchronous systems

    Journal ArticleThis paper describes a new method for architectural synthesis of timed asynchronous systems. Due to the variable delays associated with asynchronous resources, implicit schedules are created by the addition of supplementary constraints between resources. Since the number of schedules grows exponentially with respect to the size of the given data flow graph, pruning techniques are introduced which dramatically improve run-time without significantly affecting the quality of the results. Using a combination of data and resource constraints, as well as an analysis of bounded delay information, our method determines the minimum number of resources and registers needed to implement a given schedule. Results are demonstrated using some high-level synthesis benchmark circuits and an industrial example

    Resiliency in numerical algorithm design for extreme scale simulations

    This work is based on the seminar titled ‘Resiliency in Numerical Algorithm Design for Extreme Scale Simulations’ held March 1–6, 2020, at Schloss Dagstuhl, that was attended by all the authors. Advanced supercomputing is characterized by very high computation speeds at the cost of involving an enormous amount of resources and costs. A typical large-scale computation running for 48 h on a system consuming 20 MW, as predicted for exascale systems, would consume a million kWh, corresponding to about 100k Euro in energy cost for executing 1023 floating-point operations. It is clearly unacceptable to lose the whole computation if any of the several million parallel processes fails during the execution. Moreover, if a single operation suffers from a bit-flip error, should the whole computation be declared invalid? What about the notion of reproducibility itself: should this core paradigm of science be revised and refined for results that are obtained by large-scale simulation? Naive versions of conventional resilience techniques will not scale to the exascale regime: with a main memory footprint of tens of Petabytes, synchronously writing checkpoint data all the way to background storage at frequent intervals will create intolerable overheads in runtime and energy consumption. Forecasts show that the mean time between failures could be lower than the time to recover from such a checkpoint, so that large calculations at scale might not make any progress if robust alternatives are not investigated. More advanced resilience techniques must be devised. The key may lie in exploiting both advanced system features as well as specific application knowledge. Research will face two essential questions: (1) what are the reliability requirements for a particular computation and (2) how do we best design the algorithms and software to meet these requirements? While the analysis of use cases can help understand the particular reliability requirements, the construction of remedies is currently wide open. One avenue would be to refine and improve on system- or application-level checkpointing and rollback strategies in the case an error is detected. Developers might use fault notification interfaces and flexible runtime systems to respond to node failures in an application-dependent fashion. Novel numerical algorithms or more stochastic computational approaches may be required to meet accuracy requirements in the face of undetectable soft errors. These ideas constituted an essential topic of the seminar. The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to bring together a diverse group of scientists with expertise in exascale computing to discuss novel ways to make applications resilient against detected and undetected faults. In particular, participants explored the role that algorithms and applications play in the holistic approach needed to tackle this challenge. This article gathers a broad range of perspectives on the role of algorithms, applications and systems in achieving resilience for extreme scale simulations.     Asynchronous methods minimize idle times by removing synchronization barriers, and therefore allow the efficient usage of computer systems. The implied high tolerance with respect to communication latencies improves the fault tolerance. As asynchronous methods also enable the usage of the power and energy saving mechanisms provided by the hardware, they are suitable candidates for the highly parallel and heterogeneous hardware platforms that are expected for the near future

    Solution of partial differential equations on vector and parallel computers

    The present status of numerical methods for partial differential equations on vector and parallel computers was reviewed. The relevant aspects of these computers are discussed and a brief review of their development is included, with particular attention paid to those characteristics that influence algorithm selection. Both direct and iterative methods are given for elliptic equations as well as explicit and implicit methods for initial boundary value problems. The intent is to point out attractive methods as well as areas where this class of computer architecture cannot be fully utilized because of either hardware restrictions or the lack of adequate algorithms.     dissertationCommunication surpasses computation as the power and performance bottleneck in forthcoming exascale processors. Scaling has made transistors cheap, but on-chip wires have grown more expensive, both in terms of latency as well as energy. Therefore, the need for low energy, high performance interconnects is highly pronounced, especially for long distance communication. In this work, we examine two aspects of the global signaling problem. The first part of the thesis focuses on a high bandwidth asynchronous signaling protocol for long distance communication. Asynchrony among intellectual property (IP) cores on a chip has become necessary in a System on Chip (SoC) environment. Traditional asynchronous handshaking protocol suffers from loss of throughput due to the added latency of sending the acknowledge signal back to the sender. We demonstrate a method that supports end-to-end communication across links with arbitrarily large latency, without limiting the bandwidth, so long as line variation can be reliably controlled. We also evaluate the energy and latency improvements as a result of the design choices made available by this protocol. The use of transmission lines as a physical interconnect medium shows promise for deep submicron technologies. In our evaluations, we notice a lower energy footprint, as well as vastly reduced wire latency for transmission line interconnects. We approach this problem from two sides. Using field solvers, we investigate the physical design choices to determine the optimal way to implement these lines for a given back-end-of-line (BEOL) stack. We also approach the problem from a system designer's viewpoint, looking at ways to optimize the lines for different performance targets. This work analyzes the advantages and pitfalls of implementing asynchronous channel protocols for communication over long distances. Finally, the innovations resulting from this work are applied to a network-on-chip design example and the resulting power-performance benefits are reported

    En las últimas décadas, la inversión en el ámbito energético ha aumentado considerablemente. Actualmente, existen numerosas empresas que están desarrollando equipos como convertidores de potencia o máquinas eléctricas con sistemas de control de última generación. La tendencia actual es usar System-on-chips y Field Programmable Gate Arrays para implementar todo el sistema de control. Estos dispositivos facilitan el uso de algoritmos de control más complejos y eficientes, mejorando la eficiencia de los equipos y habilitando la integración de los sistemas renovables en la red eléctrica. Sin embargo, la complejidad de los sistemas de control también ha aumentado considerablemente y con ello la dificultad de su verificación. Los sistemas Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) se han presentado como una solución para la verificación no destructiva de los equipos energéticos, evitando accidentes y pruebas de alto coste en bancos de ensayo. Los sistemas HIL simulan en tiempo real el comportamiento de la planta de potencia y su interfaz para realizar las pruebas con la placa de control en un entorno seguro. Esta tesis se centra en mejorar el proceso de verificación de los sistemas de control en aplicaciones de electrónica potencia. La contribución general es proporcionar una alternativa a al uso de los HIL para la verificación del hardware/software de la tarjeta de control. La alternativa se basa en la técnica de Software-in-the-loop (SIL) y trata de superar o abordar las limitaciones encontradas hasta la fecha en el SIL. Para mejorar las cualidades de SIL se ha desarrollado una herramienta software denominada COSIL que permite co-simular la implementación e integración final del sistema de control, sea software (CPU), hardware (FPGA) o una mezcla de software y hardware, al mismo tiempo que su interacción con la planta de potencia. Dicha plataforma puede trabajar en múltiples niveles de abstracción e incluye soporte para realizar co-simulación mixtas en distintos lenguajes como C o VHDL. A lo largo de la tesis se hace hincapié en mejorar una de las limitaciones de SIL, su baja velocidad de simulación. Se proponen diferentes soluciones como el uso de emuladores software, distintos niveles de abstracción del software y hardware, o relojes locales en los módulos de la FPGA. En especial se aporta un mecanismo de sincronizaron externa para el emulador software QEMU habilitando su emulación multi-core. Esta aportación habilita el uso de QEMU en plataformas virtuales de co-simulacion como COSIL. Toda la plataforma COSIL, incluido el uso de QEMU, se ha analizado bajo diferentes tipos de aplicaciones y bajo un proyecto industrial real. Su uso ha sido crítico para desarrollar y verificar el software y hardware del sistema de control de un convertidor de 400 kVA
