THE IMPACT OF ACCREDITATION ON THE GROWTH OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA.

The library being the most essential pillar of any academic institution needs utmost attention to avoid total collapse of the entire university community. The process of programmes accreditation in Nigerian universities is to ensure a uniform Maximum Academic Standards (MAS). To ensure that the process is meeting its set goals and objectives, this study examines the impact of accreditation on the growth of academic libraries in Nigeria. The research adopts a descriptive survey design. A total enumeration technique was used to select 125 respondents as the sampled population. Questionnaire was used for data collection and analyzed using simple percentage. The finding revealed that there is paucity of funds affecting the optimum performance of academic libraries in Nigeria; fund is not released until accreditation is approaching. Findings further revealed that accreditation exercise has been beneficial to the library in terms of increased library information resources and library face lift. The finding also revealed some of the challenges facing academic libraries in Nigeria. When there is no accreditation, the library faces poor attention and lack of fund from the university management which results to poor library services and no acquisition. Therefore, the study recommends that academic libraries in Nigeria should device a means of self-funding through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in form of bindery, internet access provision, reprographic services etc. Also, the university managements should continue to fund its library and release to time the statutory 10% total budget of the institution’s recurrent expenditure

American Librarian Ralph Munn\u27s historic tour of Australian libraries in 1934 is well documented. Along with Ernest Pitt, Chief Librarian of the State Library of Victoria, he spent nearly ten weeks travelling from Sydney and back again, visiting libraries in all the state capitals and many regional towns throughout the country. Munn\u27s trip was funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which was then, through its Dominions fund, turning attention to philanthropic opportunities in the Antipodes. The resulting report, Australian Libraries: A Survey of Conditions and Suggestions for their Improvement (commonly referred to as the Munn-Pitt Report) is often credited with initiating the public library movement in Australia. Capitalism, Information and Democracy

Debate as regards the relation between democracy and information has been dominated by the concept of public sphere, one that has presupposed over recent decades state subsidy of information and communication resources. In contrast, this article reviews criticisms presented by pro-market analyses of inadequacies of state involvement. It proceeds to examine and engage their argument that capitalism is capable of meeting the informational needs of people when left to its own devices, especially in an era of new media developments. Capitalism can even be presented as an information system that is, in key respects, inherently democratic. The essay continues to address a further pro-market view, which suggests that concern for information in democracies is misplaced. This position contends that capitalism is crucial for liberal democracy, but that an information infrastructure - especially one subsidized by the state - is not vital for democracy's effective functioning. The policy advice of this position is unambiguous: keep the state out of information and communications domains

Library Utilization among College Of Medicine Research Year Undergraduates: Case Study of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpomanigeria

This study investigates the prevalence of library utilization by the college of medicine research year undergraduates of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. It is a descriptive cross sectional survey that involved the use of a pre-tested questionnaire. The results revealed that though the research year undergraduates have library identification cards, they however, did not utilize the library for their research work. Only 8% reported using the library alongside the internet for their research work. Those who did not visit the library in the course of their research work reported using only the internet. The main constraints for not using the library included absence of internet services in college library (100%), lack of up-to-date research journals (91%), difficulties in identifying relevant texts (80%), and restricted access duration (57%). The students were indeed convinced that unlike the college library, the internet was preferable; suggested therefore, the need for libraries to develop ways of satisfying the research need of users especially the students.Keywords: Library, Utilizations, Research year undergraduates, Nigeri

EXAMINATION OF THE CURRENT STATE OF GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN WA MUNICIPAL

Building maintenance is a phenomenon that transcends all disciplines over the world and its importance cannot be overemphasized It has become very critical in institution success such that its intervention is indispensable. Public senior high school buildings in Ghana represent significant investment of the tax payers’ money and therefore maintaining these buildings is important. However, there seems to be paucity of studies on the examination of the current state of maintenance of government buildings in senior high schools in general and Wa Municipality in particular. This research seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the current state of maintenance of government buildings in senior high schools in Wa Municipal of the Upper West Region of Ghana. Study methods include the use of questionnaire, interview guides, focus group discussion guide and observation checklist for data analysis. A total of 393 respondents (197 students, 140 teachers and 56 school management) who took part in this study were purposively selected. The study also found out that the current state of all the public senior high school buildings in the Wa Municipality is satisfactory for academic work; albeit poorly maintained with some buildings in a bad state. The study identified that the major defects on some of the school buildings are related to the state of services (students mean = 2.523, teachers mean = 2.321, school management mean = 2.464), fittings and furniture (students mean = 2.457, teachers mean = 2.500, school management mean = 1.982), as well as the finishes and windows (students mean = 2.609, teachers mean = 2.429, school management mean = 1.804). The school buildings which were highly affected were detected to be school dormitories, and teachers’ bungalows; whereas the school administration block and the school laboratory were found to be relatively in good state with reference to the number of defects. The study recommends that there is an urgent need for maintenance works to be carried out on public senior high school buildings in the Wa Municipality and also there should be a conscious effort to include maintenance activities in the budget both at the Assembly level and the school level in the Wa Municipality to ensure regular maintenance of their senior high school buildings.
