    Expanding Navigation Systems by Integrating It with Advanced Technologies

    Navigation systems provide the optimized route from one location to another. It is mainly assisted by external technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and satellite-based radio navigation systems. GPS has many advantages such as high accuracy, available anywhere, reliable, and self-calibrated. However, GPS is limited to outdoor operations. The practice of combining different sources of data to improve the overall outcome is commonly used in various domains. GIS is already integrated with GPS to provide the visualization and realization aspects of a given location. Internet of things (IoT) is a growing domain, where embedded sensors are connected to the Internet and so IoT improves existing navigation systems and expands its capabilities. This chapter proposes a framework based on the integration of GPS, GIS, IoT, and mobile communications to provide a comprehensive and accurate navigation solution. In the next section, we outline the limitations of GPS, and then we describe the integration of GIS, smartphones, and GPS to enable its use in mobile applications. For the rest of this chapter, we introduce various navigation implementations using alternate technologies integrated with GPS or operated as standalone devices

    RSL ROVER: Robotic Systems Laboratory Rugged Offroad Vehicle for Experimental Research

    The goal of this project was to build an autonomous vehicle testbed for the Robotics Systems Laboratory. This testbed will be used by undergraduate, graduate, and faculty researchers to test different control methods, sensor combinations, vehicle control laws, and eventually autonomous navigation. This paper documents our accomplishments to achieve this goal; we built a hierarchical control system, robust actuator mounts, and an effective safety system. The result is a capable 6-wheeled offroad vehicle that can be electronically controlled by remote or directly by wire. A feed-forward control law was incorporated for speed control, yielding predictable performance given a desired speed. Actuators were tuned for fast, reliable response and wiring was kept organized. The team believes the vehicle will be a useful asset to the Robotic Systems Lab for future research. To improve upon our testbed, global positioning and a compass should be integrated along with other sensors that came with the vehicle such as a Lidar unit. With these additional components, the vehicle should be able to run autonomously

Infotainment system is one such pivotal system which not only makes the vehicle smart but also offers abundance of information as well as entertainment to the driver and passenger. The capability to offer extensive relay of service through infotainment system is highly dependent on vehicular adhoc network as well as back end support of cloud environment. However, it is know that such legacy system of vehicular adhoc network is also characterized by various problems associated with channel capacity, latency, heterogeneous network processing, and many more. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive insight to the research work being carried out towards leveraging the infotainment system in order to obtain the true picture of strength, limitation, and open end problems associated with infotainment system

    Survey of smart parking systems

    The large number of vehicles constantly seeking access to congested areas in cities means that finding a public parking place is often difficult and causes problems for drivers and citizens alike. In this context, strategies that guide vehicles from one point to another, looking for the most optimal path, are needed. Most contributions in the literature are routing strategies that take into account different criteria to select the optimal route required to find a parking space. This paper aims to identify the types of smart parking systems (SPS) that are available today, as well as investigate the kinds of vehicle detection techniques (VDT) they have and the algorithms or other methods they employ, in order to analyze where the development of these systems is at today. To do this, a survey of 274 publications from January 2012 to December 2019 was conducted. The survey considered four principal features: SPS types reported in the literature, the kinds of VDT used in these SPS, the algorithms or methods they implement, and the stage of development at which they are. Based on a search and extraction of results methodology, this work was able to effectively obtain the current state of the research area. In addition, the exhaustive study of the studies analyzed allowed for a discussion to be established concerning the main difficulties, as well as the gaps and open problems detected for the SPS.     Role of smart vehicles concept in reducing traffic congestion on the road

    The aim of this simple qualitative review was to provide an overview of how smart vehicles concept facilitates reducing traffic congestion on the road. Google Scholar was searched for literature sources using the topic itself as the search term. The search yielded 40 usable papers for this review. Many elements of smart city are inter-mixed with the smart vehicles concept. On the other hand in the smart vehicle concept, enabling technologies like VANET, IoV, SDN, use of mobiles and even use of electric poles on the road as IoT gateway were tested in the different frameworks proposed by different researchers. Many other traffic management systems have also been tested especially in Japan and India. In general, two scenarios have been considered-one of current types of roads and the other automated highways. Understandably, the requirements and approaches are different for the two scenarios.     Intelligent Management System for Driverless Vehicles

    This research addresses concerns related to driverless vehicles by proposing the development of an Intelligent Management System (IMS). Emphasised in 'The Pathway to Driverless Cars Summary report and action plan' by the UK Department of Transport, key areas for improvement lie in vehicle reliability, maintenance, and passenger safety. The study targets compliance with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 5 automation, concentrating on fully autonomous vehicles to enhance commuter satisfaction and overall vehicle performance. Despite advancements, challenges such as on-road safety and integration persist. The research unfolds through a two-stage development process aimed at achieving an Intelligent Management System for Driverless Vehicles (IMSDV). The initial stage, described in chapter 3 involves the creation of a 'Single Seat Driverless Pod' as a test apparatus, simulating various features found in existing driverless vehicles. This includes the development of mechanical steering components and a control system incorporating electronic hardware, sensors, actuators, controllers, wireless remote access, and software. The subsequent phase, described in chapter 4 focuses on autonomous navigation using Google Maps, intelligent motion control, localisation, and tracking algorithms within the driverless pod. The latter chapters of the thesis present the investigation of possible improvements in steering system components. A novel encapsulated vehicle wheel condition monitoring system, integrating the Internet of Things (IoT), is proposed to enhance maintainability, reliability, and passenger safety for driverless vehicles. Testing and validation are conducted in two segments. The driverless pod undergoes initial testing to validate its features and generate data for further sub-system development. Separately, the IoT-based monitoring system undergoes individual testing. The final step involves integrating the IoT capabilities into the driverless pod, testing the sub-system, and capturing relevant data. The thesis outlines the research scope, emphasising significant contributions, with a particular focus on the monitoring system for steering components in driverless vehicles, employing embedded IoT technology. This augmentation, alongside other original contribution, is strategically poised to enhance the maintainability, reliability, and safety of driverless vehicles at SAE Level 5. The concluding chapter succinctly revisits these distinctive contributions and additionally provides recommendations for advancing intelligent management systems for driverless vehicles

    The design and implementation of serious games for driving and mobility

    The automotive and transportation sectors are showing consistent improvements in trends and standards concerning the safe and convenient travel of the road users. In this growing community of road users, the driver performance is a notable factor as many on-road mishaps emerge out of poor driver performance. In this research work, a case-study and experimental analysis were conducted to improve driver performance through the deployment of serious games. The primary motive of this work is to stimulate the on-road user performance through immediate feedback, driver coaching, and real-time gamification methods. The games exploit the cloud-based architecture to retrieve the driver performance scores based on real-time evaluation of vehicle signals and display the outcomes on game scene by reflecting the game parameters based on real-world user performance (in the context of driving and mobility). The deployment of games in cars is the topic of interest in current state-of-the-art, as there are more factors associated with it, such as safety, usability, and willingness of the users. These aspects were taken into careful consideration while designing the paradigm of gamification model. The user feedback for the real-time games was extracted through pilot tests and field tests in Genova. The gamification and driver coaching aspects were tested on various occasions (plug-in and field tests conducted at 5 European test sites), and the inputs from these field tests enabled to tune the parameters concerning the evaluation and gamification models. The improvement of user behavior was performed through a virtuous cycle with the integration of virtual sensors to the serious gaming framework. As the culmination, the usability tests for the real-time games were conducted with 18 test users to understand the user acceptance criteria and the parameters (ease of use and safety) that would contribute to the deployment of games. Other salient factors such as the impact of games, large-scale deployment, collaborative gaming and exploitation of gaming framework for 3rd party applications were also investigated in this research activity. The analysis of the usability tests states that the user acceptance of the implemented games is good. The report from usability study has addressed the user preferences in games such as duration, strategy and gameplay mechanism; these factors contribute a foundation for future research in implementing the games for mobility

    A survey of secure middleware for the Internet of Things

    The rapid growth of small Internet connected devices, known as the Internet of Things (IoT), is creating a new set of challenges to create secure, private infrastructures. This paper reviews the current literature on the challenges and approaches to security and privacy in the Internet of Things, with a strong focus on how these aspects are handled in IoT middleware. We focus on IoT middleware because many systems are built from existing middleware and these inherit the underlying security properties of the middleware framework. The paper is composed of three main sections. Firstly, we propose a matrix of security and privacy threats for IoT. This matrix is used as the basis of a widespread literature review aimed at identifying requirements on IoT platforms and middleware. Secondly, we present a structured literature review of the available middleware and how security is handled in these middleware approaches. We utilise the requirements from the first phase to evaluate. Finally, we draw a set of conclusions and identify further work in this area
