    Which are the main goals of an archive? To preserve or to dispose documents? What differentiates a physical file from a digital one? It would be a digital archive able to change the meaning of terms such as “document”, “copy” and “editing”? These are some of the questions that The William Blake Archive produces in the minds of Blake’s scholars and of interested in the preservation of historical archives and document and literary collections.     Squires (1999) discussed the gap between HCI (Human Computer Interaction) and the educational computing communities in their very different approaches to evaluating educational software. This paper revisits that issue in the context of evaluating digital resources, focusing on two approaches to evaluation: an HCI and an educational perspective. Squires and Preece's HCI evaluation model is a predictive model ‐ it helps teachers decide whether or not to use educational software ‐ whilst our own concern is in evaluating the use of learning technologies. It is suggested that in part the different approaches of the two communities relate to the different focus that each takes: in HCI the focus is typically on development and hence usability, whilst in education the concern is with the learner and teacher use

    Media literacy at all levels: making the humanities more inclusive

    The decline of the humanities, combined with the arrival of students focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), represent an opportunity for the development of innovative approaches to teaching languages and literatures. Expanding the instructional focus from traditional humanities students, who are naturally more text-focused, to address the needs of more application-oriented STEM learners ensures that language instructors prepare all students to become analytical and critical consumers and producers of digital media. Training students to question motives both in their own and authentic media messages and to justify their own interpretations results in more sophisticated second language (L2) communication. Even where institutional structures impede comprehensive curriculum reform, individual instructors can integrate media literacy training into their own classes. Tis article demonstrates ways of reaching and retaining larger numbers of students at all levels—if necessary, one course at a time.Published versio

    Human computer interaction for international development: past present and future

    Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in research into the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the context of developing regions, particularly into how such ICTs might be appropriately designed to meet the unique user and infrastructural requirements that we encounter in these cross-cultural environments. This emerging field, known to some as HCI4D, is the product of a diverse set of origins. As such, it can often be difficult to navigate prior work, and/or to piece together a broad picture of what the field looks like as a whole. In this paper, we aim to contextualize HCI4D—to give it some historical background, to review its existing literature spanning a number of research traditions, to discuss some of its key issues arising from the work done so far, and to suggest some major research objectives for the future

    This article reframes the concept of comprehension as a social and intellectual practice. It reviews current approaches to reading instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse and low socioeconomic students, noting an emphasis on comprehension as autonomous skills. The Four Resources model (Freebody & Luke, 1990) is used to make the case for the integration of comprehension instruction with an emphasis on student cultural and community knowledge, and substantive intellectual and sociocultural content in elementary school curricula. Illustrations are drawn from research underway on the teaching of literacy in primary schools in low SES communities

    Sheep and goats:manipulating visual perception through colour relationships

    Sheep and Goats hides visual messages in plain sight. It is a print diptych which investigates the idea that artwork can be intentionally created to be experienced differently dependent on one’s visual abilities. Each silk-screened/ink-jet print is 84 cm x 112 cm. It is accompanied by a smart device fitted with augmented reality colour vision deficiency simulation and recolouring software. The collaboration of artist David Lyons with computer scientist David Flatla resulted in prints which communicate unique details exclusively to those colour blindness, while simultaneously containing imagery that those with typical colour vision experience. This was done through the use and understanding of colour theory, artistic principles and computer science applications. All the artwork is revealed to both audiences through the use of tablets whose software allows the translation of the imagery between the two audiences. The tablets with CVD simulation and recolouring software allow those with typical colour sight to view what those with colour blindness see, and those with colour blindness to gain an appreciation of what individuals with typical sight see.To indicate engagement of audiences of varied colour vision abilities, Triple Blind reference the circles of the Ishihara Colour Blind Test. The dualistic words ‘heaven’ and ‘HELL’ are used to suggest conflicting perceptions as are the clear varnish over-printed lyrics from the song “Sheep go to Heaven’ by the rock band Cake. Based on a survey of 209 undergraduate students, the study reports high levels of usage and satisfaction with content and delivery, and suggests the technology added value to class content for students
