    Towards Realistic Facial Expression Recognition

    Get PDF
Automatic facial expression recognition has attracted significant attention over the past decades. Although substantial progress has been achieved for certain scenarios (such as frontal faces in strictly controlled laboratory settings), accurate recognition of facial expression in realistic environments remains unsolved for the most part. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate facial expression recognition in unconstrained environments. As one major problem faced by the literature is the lack of realistic training and testing data, this thesis presents a web search based framework to collect realistic facial expression dataset from the Web. By adopting an active learning based method to remove noisy images from text based image search results, the proposed approach minimizes the human efforts during the dataset construction and maximizes the scalability for future research. Various novel facial expression features are then proposed to address the challenges imposed by the newly collected dataset. Finally, a spectral embedding based feature fusion framework is presented to combine the proposed facial expression features to form a more descriptive representation. This thesis also systematically investigates how the number of frames of a facial expression sequence can affect the performance of facial expression recognition algorithms, since facial expression sequences may be captured under different frame rates in realistic scenarios. A facial expression keyframe selection method is proposed based on keypoint based frame representation. Comprehensive experiments have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented methods

AGE ESTIMATION USING NEURAL NETWORKS BASED ON FACE IMAGES WITH STUDY OF DIFFERENT FEATURE EXTRACTION METHODS

Facial age estimation recently becomes active research topic in pattern recognition. As there are vast potential application in age specific human computer interaction security control and surveillance monitoring. Insufficient and incomplete training data, uncontrollable environment, facial expression are the most prominent challenges in facial age estimation. Degree of accuracy for age estimation is obtained by forming appropriate feature vector of a facial image. Feature vectors are constructed from facial features. Therefore comparative study of feature extraction from facial image by bio inspired feature (BIF), histogram of gradient (HOG), Gabor filter, wavelet transform and scattering transform is done. The propose approach exploits scattering transform gives more information about features of the facial images. Well organized system consist scattering transform that disperse gabber coefficients pulling with smooth gaussian process in number of layers which isused to calculate for facial feature representation. These extracted features are classified using support vector machine and artificial neural network

Feature-based Lucas-Kanade and Active Appearance Models

    Get PDF
Lucas-Kanade and Active Appearance Models are among the most commonly used methods for image alignment and facial fitting, respectively. They both utilize non-linear gradient descent, which is usually applied on intensity values. In this paper, we propose the employment of highly-descriptive, densely-sampled image features for both problems. We show that the strategy of warping the multi-channel dense feature image at each iteration is more beneficial than extracting features after warping the intensity image at each iteration. Motivated by this observation, we demonstrate robust and accurate alignment and fitting performance using a variety of powerful feature descriptors. Especially with the employment of HOG and SIFT features, our method significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art results on in-the-wild databases

    Gender Classification from Facial Images

    Get PDF
Gender classification based on facial images has received increased attention in the computer vision community. In this work, a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art gender classification methods is carried out on publicly available databases and extended to reallife face images, where face detection and face normalization are essential for the success of the system. Next, the possibility of predicting gender from face images acquired in the near-infrared spectrum (NIR) is explored. In this regard, the following two questions are addressed: (a) Can gender be predicted from NIR face images; and (b) Can a gender predictor learned using visible (VIS) images operate successfully on NIR images and vice-versa? The experimental results suggest that NIR face images do have some discriminatory information pertaining to gender, although the degree of discrimination is noticeably lower than that of VIS images. Further, the use of an illumination normalization routine may be essential for facilitating cross-spectral gender prediction. By formulating the problem of gender classification in the framework of both visible and near-infrared images, the guidelines for performing gender classification in a real-world scenario is provided, along with the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology. Finally, the general problem of attribute classification is addressed, where features such as expression, age and ethnicity are derived from a face image
