    Synthesis of synchronous elastic architectures

    A simple protocol for latency-insensitive design is presented. The main features of the protocol are the efficient implementation of elastic communication channels and the automatable design methodology. With this approach, fine-granularity elasticity can be introduced at the level of functional units (e.g. ALUs, memories). A formal specification of the protocol is defined and an efficient scheme for the implementation of elasticity that involves no datapath overhead is presented.     Adaptive Latency Insensitive Protocols andElastic Circuits with Early Evaluation: A Comparative Analysis

    AbstractLatency Insensitive Protocols (LIP) and Elastic Circuits (EC) solve the same problem of rendering a design tolerant to additional latencies caused by wires or computational elements. They are performance-limited by a firing semantics that enforces coherency through a lazy evaluation rule: Computation is enabled if all inputs to a block are simultaneously available. Adaptive LIP's (ALIP) and EC with early evaluation (ECEE) increase the performance by relaxing the evaluation rule: Computation is enabled as soon as the subset of inputs needed at a given time is available. Their difference in terms of implementation and behavior in selected cases justifies the need for the comparative analysis reported in this paper. Results have been obtained through simple examples, a single representative case-study already used in the context of both LIP's and EC and through extensive simulations over a suite of benchmarks

    Adaptive Latency Insensitive Protocols

    Latency-insensitive design copes with excessive delays typical of global wires in current and future IC technologies. It achieves its goal via encapsulation of synchronous logic blocks in wrappers that communicate through a latency-insensitive protocol (LIP) and pipelined interconnects. Previously proposed solutions suffer from an excessive performance penalty in terms of throughput or from a lack of generality. This article presents an adaptive LIP that outperforms previous static implementations, as demonstrated by two relevant cases — a microprocessor and an MPEG encoder — whose components we made insensitive to the latencies of their interconnections through a newly developed wrapper.     Modern System-on-chip (SoC) hardware design puts considerable pressure on existing design and verification flows, languages and tools. The Register Transfer Level (RTL)description, which forms the input for synchronous, logic synthesis-driven design is at too low a level of abstraction for efficient architectural exploration and re-use. The existing methods for taking a high-level paper specification and refining this specification to an implementation that meets its performance criteria is largely manual and error-prone and as RTL descriptions get larger, a systematic design method is necessary to address explicitly the timing issues that arise when applying logic synthesis to such large blocks.Guarded Atomic Actions have been shown to offer a convenient notation for describing microarchitectures that is amenable to formal reasoning and high-level synthesis. Event-B is a language and method that supports the development of specifications with automatic proof and refinement, based on guarded atomic actions. Latency-insensitive design ensures that a design composed of functionally correct components will be independent of communication latency. A method has been developed which uses Event-B for latency-insensitive SoC component and sub-system design which can be combined with high-level, component synthesis to enable architectural exploration and re-use at the specification level and to close the specification gap in the SoC hardware flow

    Cyber-Physical Systems require distributed architectures to support safety critical real-time control. Hermann Kopetz' Time-Triggered Architecture (TTA) has been proposed as both an architecture and a comprehensive paradigm for systems architecture, for such systems. TTA offers the programmer a logical discrete time compliant with synchronous programming, together with timing bounds. A clock synchronization protocol is required, unless the local clocks used themselves provide the recquired accuracy. To relax the strict requirements on synchronization imposed by TTA, Loosely Time-Triggered Architectures (LTTA) have been proposed. In LTTA, computation and communication units are all triggered by autonomous, unsynchronized, clocks. Communication media act as shared memories between writers and readers and communication is non blocking. This is at the price of communication artifacts (such as duplication or loss of data), which must be compensated for by using some "LTTA protocol". In this paper we pursue our previous work by providing a unified presentation of the two variants of LTTA (token- and time-based), with simplified analyses. We compare these two variants regarding performance and robustness and we provide ways to combine them. It is dedicated to our close friend Paul Caspi who died in April 2012.Les infrastructures de calcul distribuées pour le contrôle des systèmes embarqués critiques requièrent des propriétés particulières destinées à préserver les caractéristiques attendues du contrôleur. Les architectures TTA (Time-Triggered Architectures) ont été proposées par Hermann Kopetz, à la fois comme une architecture de calcul et comme une méthodologie de conception des systèmes. TTA offre au programmeur un temps logique conforme à celui de la programmation synchrone, avec en outre un contrôle strict du temps. Il requiert un protocole de synchronisation entre les horloges du système réparti. Pour affaiblir ces hypothèses, les architectures LTTA (Loosely Time-Triggered Architectures) ont été proposées récemment. Dans LTTA, les calculs et les communications sont rythmées par des horloges locales, non synchronisées. Les supports de communication se comportent comme des mémoires partagées. La communication est donc non-bloquante. Ce type de communiccation crée évidemment des artefacts à combattre par un protocole dit "LTTA". Dans cet article nous présentons une approche unifiée des deux techniques connues pour ce type de protocole, reposant sur l'usage, soit de jetons, soit du temps. On compare ces deux variantes et on étudie leur performance. Le présent rapport est une version corrigée d'un article paru à Emsoft'2010.
