    Stability analysis of a general class of singularly perturbed linear hybrid systems

    Motivated by a real problem in steel production, we introduce and analyze a general class of singularly perturbed linear hybrid systems with both switches and impulses, in which the slow or fast nature of the variables can be mode-dependent. This means that, at switching instants, some of the slow variables can become fast and vice-versa. Firstly, we show that using a mode-dependent variable reordering we can rewrite this class of systems in a form in which the variables preserve their nature over time. Secondly, we establish, through singular perturbation techniques, an upper bound on the minimum dwell-time ensuring the overall system's stability. Remarkably, this bound is the sum of two terms. The first term corresponds to an upper bound on the minimum dwell-time ensuring the stability of the reduced order linear hybrid system describing the slow dynamics. The order of magnitude of the second term is determined by that of the parameter defining the ratio between the two time-scales of the singularly perturbed system. We show that the proposed framework can also take into account the change of dimension of the state vector at switching instants. Numerical illustrations complete our study

    The aim of Cognitive Control was to create cognitive automation systems with the capabilities automatic control performance monitoring (CPM), self-detection and automatic diagnosis of faults (sensors, actuators, controller) and self-adaptation in control system environments to optimise the product quality and minimise energy consumption in steel during the whole life cycle. In this project several software tools for online Control Performance Monitoring (CPM), monitoring energy efficiency, diagnosis of poor performance root-causes and control re-tuning for univariable and multivariable, linear and nonlinear processes were developed. The software tools were Graphical User Interface (GUI) that provided interface to access process data. The implemented methodologies were subsequently published as conference and journal papers. The methods were tested at hot strip mills, annealing furnaces and galvanizing lines

    DESIGN AND FLIGHT TESTING OF A WARPING WING FOR AUTONOMOUS FLIGHT CONTROL

    Inflatable-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have the ability to be packed in a fraction of their deployed volume. This makes them ideal for many deployable UAV designs, but inflatable wings can be flexible and don’t have conventional control surfaces. This thesis will investigate the use of wing warping as a means of autonomous control for inflatable wings. Due to complexities associated with manufacturing inflatable structures a new method of rapid prototyping deformable wings is used in place of inflatables to decrease cost and design-cycle time. A UAV testbed was developed and integrated with the warping wings and flown in a series of flight tests. The warping wing flew both under manual control and autopilot stabilization
