Communicating Processes with Data for Supervisory Coordination
We employ supervisory controllers to safely coordinate high-level
discrete(-event) behavior of distributed components of complex systems.
Supervisory controllers observe discrete-event system behavior, make a decision
on allowed activities, and communicate the control signals to the involved
parties. Models of the supervisory controllers can be automatically synthesized
based on formal models of the system components and a formalization of the safe
coordination (control) requirements. Based on the obtained models, code
generation can be used to implement the supervisory controllers in software, on
a PLC, or an embedded (micro)processor. In this article, we develop a process
theory with data that supports a model-based systems engineering framework for
supervisory coordination. We employ communication to distinguish between the
different flows of information, i.e., observation and supervision, whereas we
employ data to specify the coordination requirements more compactly, and to
increase the expressivity of the framework. To illustrate the framework, we
remodel an industrial case study involving coordination of maintenance

Application of supervisory control synthesis to MRI scannes : improving evolvability
This paper presents an application of Ramadge-Wonham supervisory control theory to a patient support system for MRI scanners. The obtained controller was implemented and tested on real hardware. A distinguishing feature of the proposed application is that the evolvability of the controller is an essential requirement. By evolvability is the ability to adapt the controller to meet modified control objectives. The experiments conducted in the course of the case-study indicate that the use of supervisory control theory improves the evolvability of the controller
Modern software cybernetics: new trends
Software cybernetics research is to apply a variety of techniques from cybernetics research to software engineering research. For more than fifteen years since 2001, there has been a dramatic increase in work relating to software cybernetics. From cybernetics viewpoint, the work is mainly on the first-order level, namely, the software under observation and control. Beyond the first-order cybernetics, the software, developers/users, and running environments influence each other and thus create feedback to form more complicated systems. We classify software cybernetics as Software Cybernetics I based on the first-order cybernetics, and as Software Cybernetics II based on the higher order cybernetics. This paper provides a review of the literature on software cybernetics, particularly focusing on the transition from Software Cybernetics I to Software Cybernetics II. The results of the survey indicate that some new research areas such as Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, cyber-physical systems, and even creative computing are related to Software Cybernetics II. The paper identifies the relationships between the techniques of Software Cybernetics II applied and the new research areas to which they have been applied, formulates research problems and challenges of software cybernetics with the application of principles of Phase II of software cybernetics; identifies and highlights new research trends of software cybernetic for further research
Intelligent Management of Mobile Systems through Computational Self-Awareness
Runtime resource management for many-core systems is increasingly complex.
The complexity can be due to diverse workload characteristics with conflicting
demands, or limited shared resources such as memory bandwidth and power.
Resource management strategies for many-core systems must distribute shared
resource(s) appropriately across workloads, while coordinating the high-level
system goals at runtime in a scalable and robust manner.
To address the complexity of dynamic resource management in many-core
systems, state-of-the-art techniques that use heuristics have been proposed.
These methods lack the formalism in providing robustness against unexpected
runtime behavior. One of the common solutions for this problem is to deploy
classical control approaches with bounds and formal guarantees. Traditional
control theoretic methods lack the ability to adapt to (1) changing goals at
runtime (i.e., self-adaptivity), and (2) changing dynamics of the modeled
system (i.e., self-optimization).
In this chapter, we explore adaptive resource management techniques that
provide self-optimization and self-adaptivity by employing principles of
computational self-awareness, specifically reflection. By supporting these
self-awareness properties, the system can reason about the actions it takes by
considering the significance of competing objectives, user requirements, and
operating conditions while executing unpredictable workloads
Transformational supervisor synthesis for evolving systems
Supervisory controller synthesis is a means to compute correct-by-construction controllers for discrete event systems. As these systems and their requirements evolve over time, an updated supervisor needs to be computed each time an adaptation takes place. We consider the case that a supervisor has been synthesized for a given model, after which this model is (slightly) adapted. We investigate how we can make use of the previous synthesis result, in order to more efficiently compute the supervisor for the adapted model. We introduce model deltas as a means to describe the difference between pairs of models. Using the model deltas, a notion of atomic adaptations is introduced. For these atomic adaptations, algorithms are provided to compute the supervisor for the adapted model in a transformational manner from the previous synthesis result, rather than performing a completely new synthesis. These atomic adaptations can be iterated over, to transformationally compute a supervisor for model deltas that contain a number of atomic adaptations. To improve efficiency, it is shown how atomic adaptations can be grouped together based on their required computations and be processed at the same time. A running example is used to support the explanations on the functioning of the algorithms. The efficiency of the method is evaluated by means of both an academic and an industrial use case.</p

Application of Advanced Early Warning Systems with Adaptive Protection
This project developed and field-tested two methods of Adaptive Protection systems utilizing synchrophasor data. One method detects conditions of system stress that can lead to unintended relay operation, and initiates a supervisory signal to modify relay response in real time to avoid false trips. The second method detects the possibility of false trips of impedance relays as stable system swings “encroach” on the relays’ impedance zones, and produces an early warning so that relay engineers can re-evaluate relay settings. In addition, real-time synchrophasor data produced by this project was used to develop advanced visualization techniques for display of synchrophasor data to utility operators and engineers
