Cold atom Clocks and Applications
This paper describes advances in microwave frequency standards using
laser-cooled atoms at BNM-SYRTE. First, recent improvements of the Cs
and Rb atomic fountains are described. Thanks to the routine use of a
cryogenic sapphire oscillator as an ultra-stable local frequency reference, a
fountain frequency instability of where
is the measurement time in seconds is measured. The second advance is a
powerful method to control the frequency shift due to cold collisions. These
two advances lead to a frequency stability of at 7\times 10^{-16}^{87}^{133}$Cs fountains.
Finally we give an update on the cold atom space clock PHARAO developed in
collaboration with CNES. This clock is one of the main instruments of the
ACES/ESA mission which is scheduled to fly on board the International Space
Station in 2008, enabling a new generation of relativity tests.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure
Preliminary studies for anapole moment measurements in rubidium and francium
Preparations for the anapole measurement in Fr indicate the possibility of
performing a similar measurement in a chain of Rb. The sensitivity analysis
based on a single nucleon model shows the potential for placing strong limits
on the nucleon weak interaction parameters. There are values of the magnetic
fields at much lower values than found before that are insensitive to first
order changes in the field. The anapole moment effect in Rb corresponds to an
equivalent electric field that is eighty times smaller than Fr, but the
stability of the isotopes and the current performance of the dipole trap in the
apparatus, presented here, are encouraging for pursuing the measurment.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in the J. Phys.
Absolute frequency measurements of 85Rb nF7/2 Rydberg states using purely optical detection
A three-step laser excitation scheme is used to make absolute frequency
measurements of highly excited nF7/2 Rydberg states in 85Rb for principal
quantum numbers n=33-100. This work demonstrates the first absolute frequency
measurements of rubidium Rydberg levels using a purely optical detection
scheme. The Rydberg states are excited in a heated Rb vapour cell and Doppler
free signals are detected via purely optical means. All of the frequency
measurements are made using a wavemeter which is calibrated against a GPS
disciplined self-referenced optical frequency comb. We find that the measured
levels have a very high frequency stability, and are especially robust to
electric fields. The apparatus has allowed measurements of the states to an
accuracy of 8.0MHz. The new measurements are analysed by extracting the
modified Rydberg-Ritz series parameters.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to New. J. Phy
Progress in Atomic Fountains at LNE-SYRTE
We give an overview of the work done with the Laboratoire National de
M\'etrologie et d'Essais-Syst\`emes de R\'ef\'erence Temps-Espace (LNE-SYRTE)
fountain ensemble during the last five years. After a description of the clock
ensemble, comprising three fountains, FO1, FO2, and FOM, and the newest
developments, we review recent studies of several systematic frequency shifts.
This includes the distributed cavity phase shift, which we evaluate for the FO1
and FOM fountains, applying the techniques of our recent work on FO2. We also
report calculations of the microwave lensing frequency shift for the three
fountains, review the status of the blackbody radiation shift, and summarize
recent experimental work to control microwave leakage and spurious phase
perturbations. We give current accuracy budgets. We also describe several
applications in time and frequency metrology: fountain comparisons,
calibrations of the international atomic time, secondary representation of the
SI second based on the 87Rb hyperfine frequency, absolute measurements of
optical frequencies, tests of the T2L2 satellite laser link, and review
fundamental physics applications of the LNE-SYRTE fountain ensemble. Finally,
we give a summary of the tests of the PHARAO cold atom space clock performed
using the FOM transportable fountain.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, 126 reference
Elimination of the light shift in rubidium gas cell frequency standards using pulsed optical pumping
Changes in the intensity of the light source in an optically pumped, rubidium, gas cell frequency standard can produce corresponding frequency shifts, with possible adverse effects on the long-term frequency stability. A pulsed optical pumping apparatus was constructed with the intent of investigating the frequency stability in the absence of light shifts. Contrary to original expectations, a small residual frequency shift due to changes in light intensity was experimentally observed. Evidence is given which indicates that this is not a true light-shift effect. Preliminary measurements of the frequency stability of this apparatus, with this small residual pseudo light shift present, are presented. It is shown that this pseudo light shift can be eliminated by using a more homogeneous C-field. This is consistent with the idea that the pseudo light shift is due to inhomogeneity in the physics package (position-shift effect)
Atomic-state diagnostics and optimization in cold-atom experiments
We report on the creation, observation and optimization of superposition
states of cold atoms. In our experiments, rubidium atoms are prepared in a
magneto-optical trap and later, after switching off the trapping fields,
Faraday rotation of a weak probe beam is used to characterize atomic states
prepared by application of appropriate light pulses and external magnetic
fields. We discuss the signatures of polarization and alignment of atomic spin
states and identify main factors responsible for deterioration of the atomic
number and their coherence and present means for their optimization, like
relaxation in the dark with the strobe probing. These results may be used for
controlled preparation of cold atom samples and in situ magnetometry of static
and transient fieldsComment: 15 pages and 9 figures (including supplementary information
