Zulke periodes met hoge temperaturen gaan veelal gepaard met verslechterde luchtkwaliteit en droogte.     A WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG framework of 10m resolution to quantify the intra-day impact of urban features on thermal comfort

    City-scale outdoor thermal comfort diagnostics are essential for understanding actual heat stress. However, previous research primarily focused on the street scale. Here, we present the WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG framework to achieve fine-grained thermal comfort mapping at the city scale. The background climate condition affecting thermal comfort is simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the urban canopy model (UCM) at a local-scale (500m). The most dominant factor, mean radiant temperature, is simulated using the Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry (SOLWEIG) model at the micro-scale (10m). The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is calculated based on the mean radiant temperature and local climate parameters. The influence of different ground surface materials, buildings, and tree canopies is simulated in the SOLWEIG model using integrated urban morphological data. We applied this proposed framework to the city of Guangzhou, China, and investigated the intra-day variation in the impact of urban morphology during a heat wave period. Through statistical analysis, we found that the elevation in UTCI is primarily attributed to the increase in the fraction of impervious surface (ISF) during daytime, with a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.80. Tree canopy cover has a persistent cooling effect during the day. Implementing 40% of tree cover can reduce the daytime UTCI by 1.5 to 2.0 K. At nighttime, all urban features have a negligible contribution to outdoor thermal comfort. Overall, the established framework provides essential input data and references for studies and urban planners in the practice of urban (micro)climate diagnostics and planning

    Integration of the WUDAPT, WRF, and ENVI-met models to simulate extreme daytime temperature mitigation strategies in San Jose, California

    An obstacle to the modeling of strategies to mitigate extreme urban temperatures is frequently the lack of on-site meteorological data. The current study thus reports on a method that used the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to generate inputs for the ENVI-met model to produce building-scale canyon temperatures within a 300 m square near downtown San Jose. A land use distribution was generated for WRF by a WUDAPT classification, and the days of interest were then the hottest day in California history and a typical summer day. The source of meteorological data for ENVI-met, run with a 1.5 m cubic grid, was either an urbanized version of WRF; its default version; or observations at the closest NWS site. All WRF simulations were run on a 1 km grid, and output at its grid closest to the study area provided ENVI-met with lateral boundary conditions. The mitigation strategy was comprised of three parts, which either increased vegetation, rooftop albedo, or architectural shade elements. Results showed all strategies with only negligible impacts on ENVI-met nighttime 1 m level street canyon temperatures. Increased vegetation, however, was the most effective daytime strategy on both days, as it affected the largest area. The maximum vegetative cooling on the extreme and average days was −3.5 and −3.3 °C, respectively. While increased rooftop albedos produced near negligible impacts, increased architectural shading produced corresponding values of −1.6 and −1.7 °C, respectively

    BioCAS: Biometeorological Climate impact Assessment System for building-scale impact assessment of heat-stress related mortality

    An urban climate analysis system for Seoul was combined with biometeorological models for the spatially distributed assessment of heat stress risks. The Biometeorological Climate impact Assessment System (BioCAS) is based on the Climate Analysis Seoul (CAS) workbench which provides urban planners with gridded data relevant for local climate assessment at 25 m and 5 m spatial resolutions. The influence of building morphology and vegetation on mean radiant temperature Tmrt was simulated by the SOLWEIG model. Gridded hourly perceived temperature PT was computed using the Klima-Michel Model for a hot day in 2012. Daily maximum perceived temperature PTmax was then derived from these data and applied to an empirical-statistical model that explains the relationship between PTmax and excess mortality rate rEM in Seoul. The resultant rEM map quantifies the detrimental impact of hot weather at the building scale. Mean (maximum) values of rEM in old and new town areas in an urban re-development site in Seoul were estimated at 2.3 % (50.7 %) and 0 % (8.6 %), respectively, indicating that urban re-development in the new town area has generally resulted in a strong reduction of heat-stress related mortality. The study illustrates that BioCAS can generally be applied for the quantification of the impacts of hot weather on human health for different urban development scenarios. Further improvements are required, particularly to consider indoor climate conditions causing heat stress, as well as socio-economic status and population structure of local residents

This has triggered new interest in modelling and describing experimentally the specific features and processes of urban areas. Recent developments and results performed within the EU-funded project FUMAPEX on integrated systems for forecasting urban meteorology and air pollution are reported here. Issues of optimum resolution, parameterising urban roughness and surface exchange fluxes and the role of the urban soil layers are addressed with advanced meso- or sub-meso meteorological models. Recommendations, especially with respect to advanced urban air quality forecasting and information systems, are given together with an assessment of the needed further research and data

    Evaluating the Urban Canopy Scheme TERRA_URB in the COSMO Model for Selected European Cities

    The increase in built surfaces constitutes the main reason for the formation of the Urban Heat Island (UHI), that is a metropolitan area significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas. The urban heat islands and other urban-induced climate feedbacks may amplify heat stress and urban flooding under climate change and therefore to predict them correctly has become essential. Currently in the COSMO model, cities are represented by natural land surfaces with an increased surface roughness length and a reduced vegetation cover, but this approach is unable to correctly reproduce the UHI effect. By increasing the model resolution, a representation of the main physical processes that characterize the urban local meteorology should be addressed, in order to better forecast temperature, moisture and precipitation in urban environments. Within the COSMO Consortium a bulk parameterization scheme (TERRA_URB or TU) has been developed. It parametrizes the effects of buildings, streets and other man-made impervious surfaces on energy, moist and momentum exchanges between the surface and atmosphere, and additionally accounts for the anthropogenic heat flux as a heat source from the surface to the atmosphere. TU implements an impervious water-storage parameterization, and the Semi-empirical Urban canopy parametrization (SURY) that translates 3D urban canopy into bulk parameters. This paper presents evaluation results of the TU scheme in high-resolution simulations with a recent COSMO model version for selected European cities, namely Turin, Naples and Moscow. The key conclusion of the work is that the TU scheme in the COSMO model reasonably reproduces UHI effect and improves air temperature forecasts for all the investigated urban areas, despite each city has very different morphological characteristics. Our results highlight potential benefits of a new turbulence scheme and the representation of skin-layer temperature (for vegetation) in the model performance. Our model framework provides perspectives for enhancing urban climate modelling, although further investigations in improving model parametrizations, calibration and the use of more realistic urban canopy parameters are needed
