Unmanned Aerial Systems for Wildland and Forest Fires
Wildfires represent an important natural risk causing economic losses, human
death and important environmental damage. In recent years, we witness an
increase in fire intensity and frequency. Research has been conducted towards
the development of dedicated solutions for wildland and forest fire assistance
and fighting. Systems were proposed for the remote detection and tracking of
fires. These systems have shown improvements in the area of efficient data
collection and fire characterization within small scale environments. However,
wildfires cover large areas making some of the proposed ground-based systems
unsuitable for optimal coverage. To tackle this limitation, Unmanned Aerial
Systems (UAS) were proposed. UAS have proven to be useful due to their
maneuverability, allowing for the implementation of remote sensing, allocation
strategies and task planning. They can provide a low-cost alternative for the
prevention, detection and real-time support of firefighting. In this paper we
review previous work related to the use of UAS in wildfires. Onboard sensor
instruments, fire perception algorithms and coordination strategies are
considered. In addition, we present some of the recent frameworks proposing the
use of both aerial vehicles and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UV) for a more
efficient wildland firefighting strategy at a larger scale.Comment: A recent published version of this paper is available at:

An evaluation of the pedestrian classification in a multi-domain multi-modality setup
The objective of this article is to study the problem of pedestrian classification across different light spectrum domains (visible and far-infrared (FIR)) and modalities (intensity, depth and motion). In recent years, there has been a number of approaches for classifying and detecting pedestrians in both FIR and visible images, but the methods are difficult to compare, because either the datasets are not publicly available or they do not offer a comparison between the two domains. Our two primary contributions are the following: (1) we propose a public dataset, named RIFIR , containing both FIR and visible images collected in an urban environment from a moving vehicle during daytime; and (2) we compare the state-of-the-art features in a multi-modality setup: intensity, depth and flow, in far-infrared over visible domains. The experiments show that features families, intensity self-similarity (ISS), local binary patterns (LBP), local gradient patterns (LGP) and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), computed from FIR and visible domains are highly complementary, but their relative performance varies across different modalities. In our experiments, the FIR domain has proven superior to the visible one for the task of pedestrian classification, but the overall best results are obtained by a multi-domain multi-modality multi-feature fusion
Multi-modal video analysis for early fire detection
In dit proefschrift worden verschillende aspecten van een intelligent videogebaseerd branddetectiesysteem onderzocht. In een eerste luik ligt de nadruk op de multimodale verwerking van visuele, infrarood en time-of-flight videobeelden, die de louter visuele detectie verbetert. Om de verwerkingskost zo minimaal mogelijk te houden, met het oog op real-time detectie, is er voor elk van het type sensoren een set ’low-cost’ brandkarakteristieken geselecteerd die vuur en vlammen uniek beschrijven. Door het samenvoegen van de verschillende typen informatie kunnen het aantal gemiste detecties en valse alarmen worden gereduceerd, wat resulteert in een significante verbetering van videogebaseerde branddetectie. Om de multimodale detectieresultaten te kunnen combineren, dienen de multimodale beelden wel geregistreerd (~gealigneerd) te zijn. Het tweede luik van dit proefschrift focust zich hoofdzakelijk op dit samenvoegen van multimodale data en behandelt een nieuwe silhouet gebaseerde registratiemethode. In het derde en tevens laatste luik van dit proefschrift worden methodes voorgesteld om videogebaseerde brandanalyse, en in een latere fase ook brandmodellering, uit te voeren. Elk van de voorgestelde technieken voor multimodale detectie en multi-view lokalisatie zijn uitvoerig getest in de praktijk. Zo werden onder andere succesvolle testen uitgevoerd voor de vroegtijdige detectie van wagenbranden in ondergrondse parkeergarages
Reference face graph for face recognition
Face recognition has been studied extensively; however, real-world face recognition still remains a challenging task. The demand for unconstrained practical face recognition is rising with the explosion of online multimedia such as social networks, and video surveillance footage where face analysis is of significant importance. In this paper, we approach face recognition in the context of graph theory. We recognize an unknown face using an external reference face graph (RFG). An RFG is generated and recognition of a given face is achieved by comparing it to the faces in the constructed RFG. Centrality measures are utilized to identify distinctive faces in the reference face graph. The proposed RFG-based face recognition algorithm is robust to the changes in pose and it is also alignment free. The RFG recognition is used in conjunction with DCT locality sensitive hashing for efficient retrieval to ensure scalability. Experiments are conducted on several publicly available databases and the results show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods without any preprocessing necessities such as face alignment. Due to the richness in the reference set construction, the proposed method can also handle illumination and expression variation
A photogrammetric approach for real-time 3D localization and tracking of pedestrians in monocular infrared imagery
Target tracking within conventional video imagery poses a significant challenge that is increasingly being addressed via complex algorithmic solutions. The complexity of this problem can be fundamentally attributed to the ambiguity associated with actual 3D scene position of a given tracked object in relation to its observed position in 2D image space. We propose an approach that challenges the current trend in complex tracking solutions by addressing this fundamental ambiguity head-on. In contrast to prior work in the field, we leverage the key advantages of thermal-band infrared (IR) imagery for the pedestrian localization to show that robust localization and foreground target separation, afforded via such imagery, facilities accurate 3D position estimation to within the error bounds of conventional Global Position System (GPS) positioning. This work investigates the accuracy of classical photogrammetry, within the context of current target detection and classification techniques, as a means of recovering the true 3D position of pedestrian targets within the scene. Based on photogrammetric estimation of target position, we then illustrate the efficiency of regular Kalman filter based tracking operating on actual 3D pedestrian scene trajectories. We present both a statistical and experimental analysis of the associated errors of this approach in addition to real-time 3D pedestrian tracking using monocular infrared (IR) imagery from a thermal-band camera. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Low-light Pedestrian Detection in Visible and Infrared Image Feeds: Issues and Challenges
Pedestrian detection has become a cornerstone for several high-level tasks,
including autonomous driving, intelligent transportation, and traffic
surveillance. There are several works focussed on pedestrian detection using
visible images, mainly in the daytime. However, this task is very intriguing
when the environmental conditions change to poor lighting or nighttime.
Recently, new ideas have been spurred to use alternative sources, such as Far
InfraRed (FIR) temperature sensor feeds for detecting pedestrians in low-light
conditions. This study comprehensively reviews recent developments in low-light
pedestrian detection approaches. It systematically categorizes and analyses
various algorithms from region-based to non-region-based and graph-based
learning methodologies by highlighting their methodologies, implementation
issues, and challenges. It also outlines the key benchmark datasets that can be
used for research and development of advanced pedestrian detection algorithms,
particularly in low-light situation
