Sparse Transfer Learning for Interactive Video Search Reranking
Visual reranking is effective to improve the performance of the text-based
video search. However, existing reranking algorithms can only achieve limited
improvement because of the well-known semantic gap between low level visual
features and high level semantic concepts. In this paper, we adopt interactive
video search reranking to bridge the semantic gap by introducing user's
labeling effort. We propose a novel dimension reduction tool, termed sparse
transfer learning (STL), to effectively and efficiently encode user's labeling
information. STL is particularly designed for interactive video search
reranking. Technically, it a) considers the pair-wise discriminative
information to maximally separate labeled query relevant samples from labeled
query irrelevant ones, b) achieves a sparse representation for the subspace to
encodes user's intention by applying the elastic net penalty, and c) propagates
user's labeling information from labeled samples to unlabeled samples by using
the data distribution knowledge. We conducted extensive experiments on the
TRECVID 2005, 2006 and 2007 benchmark datasets and compared STL with popular
dimension reduction algorithms. We report superior performance by using the

A model for information retrieval driven by conceptual spaces
A retrieval model describes the transformation of a query into a set of documents. The question is: what drives this transformation? For semantic information retrieval type of models this transformation is driven by the content and structure of the semantic models.
In this case, Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) are the semantic models that encode the meaning employed for monolingual and cross-language retrieval. The focus of this research is the relationship between these meanings’ representations and their role and potential in augmenting existing retrieval models effectiveness.
The proposed approach is unique in explicitly interpreting a semantic reference as a pointer to a concept in the semantic model that activates all its linked neighboring concepts. It is in fact the formalization of the information retrieval model and the integration of knowledge resources from the Linguistic Linked Open Data cloud that is distinctive from other approaches. The preprocessing of the semantic model using Formal Concept Analysis enables the extraction of conceptual spaces (formal contexts)that are based on sub-graphs from the original structure of the semantic model. The types of conceptual spaces built in this case are limited by the KOSs structural relations relevant to retrieval: exact match, broader, narrower, and related. They capture the
definitional and relational aspects of the concepts in the semantic model. Also, each formal context is assigned an operational role in the flow of processes of the retrieval system enabling a clear path towards the implementations of monolingual and cross-lingual systems.
By following this model’s theoretical description in constructing a retrieval system, evaluation results have shown statistically significant results in both monolingual and bilingual settings when no methods for query expansion were used. The test suite was run on the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum Domain Specific 2004-2006 collection with additional extensions to match the specifics of this model
Building simulated queries for known-item topics: an analysis using six european languages
There has been increased interest in the use of simulated queries for evaluation and estimation purposes in Information Retrieval. However, there are still many unaddressed issues regarding their usage and impact on evaluation because their quality, in terms of retrieval performance, is unlike real queries. In this paper, we focus on methods for building simulated known-item topics and explore their quality against real known-item topics. Using existing generation models as our starting point, we explore factors which may influence the generation of the known-item topic. Informed by this detailed analysis (on six European languages) we propose a model with improved document and term selection properties, showing that simulated known-item topics can be generated that are comparable to real known-item topics. This is a significant step towards validating the potential usefulness of simulated queries: for evaluation purposes, and because building models of querying behavior provides a deeper insight into the querying process so that better retrieval mechanisms can be developed to support the user
Informedia at TRECVID 2003: Analyzing and searching broadcast news video
We submitted a number of semantic classifiers, most of which were merely trained on keyframes. We also experimented with runs of classifiers were trained exclusively on text data and relative time within the video, while a few were trained using all available multiple modalities. 1.2 Interactive search This year, we submitted two runs using different versions of the Informedia systems. In one run, a version identical to last year's interactive system was used by five researchers, who split up the topics between themselves. The system interface emphasizes text queries, allowing search across ASR, closed captions and OCR text. The result set can then be manipulated through: • storyboards of images spanning across video story segments • emphasizing matching shots to a user’s query to reduce the image count to a manageable size • resolution and layout under user control • additional filtering provided through shot classifiers such as outdoors, and shots with people, etc. • display of filter count and distribution to guide their use in manipulating storyboard views. In the best-performing interactive run, for all topics a single researcher used an improved version of the system, which allowed more effective browsing and visualization of the results of text queries using

Enriching videos with light semantics
This paper describes an ongoing prototypical framework to annotate and retrieve web videos with light semantics. The proposed framework reuses many existing vocabularies along with a video model. The knowledge is captured from three different information spaces (media content, context, document). We also describe ways to extract the semantic content descriptions from the existing usergenerated content using multiple approaches of linguistic processing and Named Entity Recognition, which are later identified with DBpedia resources to establish meanings for the tags. Finally, the implemented prototype is described with multiple search interfaces and retrieval processes.
