    Smart ports: towards a high performance, increased productivity, and a better environment

    Ports are currently competing fiercely for capital and global investments in order to improve revenues, mostly by improving performance and lowering labor costs. Smart ports are a fantastic approach to realize these elements since they integrate information and communication technologies within smart applications, ultimately contributing to port management improvement. This leads to greater performance and lower operational expenses. As a result, several ports in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America have gone smart. However, there are a lot of critical factors to consider when automating port operations, such as greenhouse gas emissions, which have reached alarming proportions. The purpose of this study is to define the most essential tasks conducted by smart ports, such as the smart ship industry, smart gantry and quayside container cranes, transport automation, smart containers, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, it gives a model of the smart port concept and highlights the critical current technologies on which the ports are based. Each technology’s most significant contributions to its development are noted. This technology is compared to more traditional technologies. It is hoped that this effort would pique the curiosity of fresh researchers in this sector

    Rate of Occurrence of Fatal Accidents in Malaysian Construction Industry after BIM Implementation

    Construction industry impacts the health and safety of its workers tremendously. This study is aimed to determine the rate of occurrence of fatal accidents after BIM implementation in Malaysia. The data used for the research was obtained from the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) website, and it was validated by the relevant professionals through interview. This descriptive analysis was grounded in 796 fatal accidents over the period of 2010-2018. Of those accidents, 38.16% were related to fall-related, 30.39% struck-by, 17.67% caught in-between, 9.89% drowning/asphyxiation and 3.89% others. The results indicate that the types of accidents identified are similar to that of most countries in the world. The findings also revealed that the accidents had occurred because one or combination of the following: management's failure, unsafe site conditions, workers behavior, and environmental factors. Future work will concentrate on the use of BIM-based tools for job hazard identification and safety training

    New Approach of Indoor and Outdoor Localization Systems

    Wearable sensors networks for safety applications in industrial scenarios

    Industrial contexts, and in particular the port areas, are very complex systems to be monitored and controlled due to the combined presence of vehicles and people. The port areas are the gateway between navigation and terrestrial transportation and are of great importance in transport logistics. Unfortunately, the management of port areas is quite complex because the safety of the workers must be always assured. Therefore, in such a context, a centralized control system for the monitoring and the prevention of risks is of particular importance. In this thesis, a real-time control system for the monitoring of people and vehicles in industrial areas is proposed. The proposed system is based on the Internet of Things paradigm, i.e. a network of “things” (such as sensors, tag RFID, actuators etc.) which can communicate and interact with each other within a shared IP addressing range, in order to share data and contribute to the management and development of advanced applications. Specifically, the thesis is focused on the design of a wearable sensors network based on RFID technology, and specifically on WISP sensors, for assuring the safety of the workers. In this network, wearable devices that can be inserted directly on the textile have been selected. Differently from conventional sensors, wearable sensors ensure a higher level of comfort, and provide higher electromagnetic performance. Furthermore, textile materials are easily available. Microstrips are good candidates for these applications because they mainly radiate perpendicularly to the planar structure, and their ground plane allows a good shielding on the body tissues. Therefore, I have designed specific antennas for RFID, that unlike the classical microstrip antennas have the radiating surface composed of several "side by side" conductive "threads of textile". Since the microwave model does not allow the design of an antenna with these characteristics with a good approximation, a specific microwave model for coupled lines has been designed. With this model, the specific antenna for RFID has been designed, with Jeans as substrate. The particular antenna’s substrate allows direct integration into garments, but since the wearable antennas are placed very close to the human body, biological issues which may arise on the human body from the use of these sensors have been analysed. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) has been considered and simulations have been conducted for evaluating the effects on the human body, and especially on the head, when irradiated with the electromagnetic waves generated by the wearable antenna realized with different materials. Dosimetric effects have been evaluated in function of the distance from the body, in order to define a safe distance for placing the antenna on the human body. The SAR has been evaluated also for full patches with different textile substrates, whose surface is larger than that of the proposed model of coupled lines. Therefore, if the SAR values evaluated for the full patch are satisfying, the SAR values for the model of coupled lines will surely be acceptable

    Special oils for halal and safe cosmetics

    Three types of non conventional oils were extracted, analyzed and tested for toxicity. Date palm kernel oil (DPKO), mango kernel oil (MKO) and Ramputan seed oil (RSO). Oil content for tow cultivars of dates Deglect Noor and Moshkan was 9.67% and 7.30%, respectively. The three varieties of mango were found to contain about 10% oil in average. The red yellow types of Ramputan were found to have 11 and 14% oil, respectively. The phenolic compounds in DPKO, MKO and RSO were 0.98, 0.88 and 0.78 mg/ml Gallic acid equivalent, respectively. Oils were analyzed for their fatty acid composition and they are rich in oleic acid C18:1 and showed the presence of (dodecanoic acid) lauric acid C12:0, which reported to appear some antimicrobial activities. All extracted oils, DPKO, MKO and RSO showed no toxic effect using prime shrimp bioassay. Since these oils are stable, melt at skin temperature, have good lubricity and are great source of essential fatty acids; they could be used as highly moisturizing, cleansing and nourishing oils because of high oleic acid content. They are ideal for use in such halal cosmetics such as Science, Engineering and Technology 75 skin care and massage, hair-care, soap and shampoo products
