    Several techniques based on the three–dimensional (3-D) discrete cosine transform (DCT) have been proposed for visual data coding. These techniques fail to provide coding coupled with quality and resolution scalability, which is a significant drawback for contextual domains, such decease diagnosis, satellite image analysis. This paper gives an overview of several state-of-the-art 3-D wavelet coders that do meet these requirements and mainly investigates various types of compression techniques those exists, and putting it all together for a conclusion on further research scope

    Parallel 3D Fast Wavelet Transform comparison on CPUs and GPUs

    We present in this paper several implementations of the 3D Fast Wavelet Transform (3D-FWT) on multicore CPUs and manycore GPUs. On the GPU side, we focus on CUDA and OpenCL programming to develop methods for an efficient mapping on manycores. On multicore CPUs, OpenMP and Pthreads are used as counterparts to maximize parallelism, and renowned techniques like tiling and blocking are exploited to optimize the use of memory. We evaluate these proposals and make a comparison between a new Fermi Tesla C2050 and an Intel Core 2 QuadQ6700. Speedups of the CUDA version are the best results, improving the execution times on CPU, ranging from 5.3x to 7.4x for different image sizes, and up to 81 times faster when communications are neglected. Meanwhile, OpenCL obtains solid gains which range from 2x factors on small frame sizes to 3x factors on larger ones

    3D encoding/2D decoding of medical data

    We propose a fully three-dimensional wavelet-based coding system featuring 3D encoding/2D decoding functionalities. A fully three-dimensional transform is combined with context adaptive arithmetic coding; 2D decoding is enabled by encoding every 2D subband image independently. The system allows a finely graded up to lossless quality scalability on any 2D image of the dataset. Fast access to 2D images is obtained by decoding only the corresponding information thus avoiding the reconstruction of the entire volume. The performance has been evaluated on a set of volumetric data and compared to that provided by other 3D as well as 2D coding systems. Results show a substantial improvement in coding efficiency (up to 33%) on volumes featuring good correlation properties along the z axis. Even though we did not address the complexity issue, we expect a decoding time of the order of one second/image after optimization. In summary, the proposed 3D/2D Multidimensional Layered Zero Coding System (3D/2D MLZC) provides the improvement in compression efficiency attainable with 3D systems without sacrificing the effectiveness in accessing the single images characteristic of 2D ones

    Scalable video compression with optimized visual performance and random accessibility

    This thesis is concerned with maximizing the coding efficiency, random accessibility and visual performance of scalable compressed video. The unifying theme behind this work is the use of finely embedded localized coding structures, which govern the extent to which these goals may be jointly achieved. The first part focuses on scalable volumetric image compression. We investigate 3D transform and coding techniques which exploit inter-slice statistical redundancies without compromising slice accessibility. Our study shows that the motion-compensated temporal discrete wavelet transform (MC-TDWT) practically achieves an upper bound to the compression efficiency of slice transforms. From a video coding perspective, we find that most of the coding gain is attributed to offsetting the learning penalty in adaptive arithmetic coding through 3D code-block extension, rather than inter-frame context modelling. The second aspect of this thesis examines random accessibility. Accessibility refers to the ease with which a region of interest is accessed (subband samples needed for reconstruction are retrieved) from a compressed video bitstream, subject to spatiotemporal code-block constraints. We investigate the fundamental implications of motion compensation for random access efficiency and the compression performance of scalable interactive video. We demonstrate that inclusion of motion compensation operators within the lifting steps of a temporal subband transform incurs a random access penalty which depends on the characteristics of the motion field. The final aspect of this thesis aims to minimize the perceptual impact of visible distortion in scalable reconstructed video. We present a visual optimization strategy based on distortion scaling which raises the distortion-length slope of perceptually significant samples. This alters the codestream embedding order during post-compression rate-distortion optimization, thus allowing visually sensitive sites to be encoded with higher fidelity at a given bit-rate. For visual sensitivity analysis, we propose a contrast perception model that incorporates an adaptive masking slope. This versatile feature provides a context which models perceptual significance. It enables scene structures that otherwise suffer significant degradation to be preserved at lower bit-rates. The novelty in our approach derives from a set of "perceptual mappings" which account for quantization noise shaping effects induced by motion-compensated temporal synthesis.     Understanding and advancing PDE-based image compression

    This thesis is dedicated to image compression with partial differential equations (PDEs). PDE-based codecs store only a small amount of image points and propagate their information into the unknown image areas during the decompression step. For certain classes of images, PDE-based compression can already outperform the current quasi-standard, JPEG2000. However, the reasons for this success are not yet fully understood, and PDE-based compression is still in a proof-of-concept stage. With a probabilistic justification for anisotropic diffusion, we contribute to a deeper insight into design principles for PDE-based codecs. Moreover, by analysing the interaction between efficient storage methods and image reconstruction with diffusion, we can rank PDEs according to their practical value in compression. Based on these observations, we advance PDE-based compression towards practical viability: First, we present a new hybrid codec that combines PDE- and patch-based interpolation to deal with highly textured images. Furthermore, a new video player demonstrates the real-time capacities of PDE-based image interpolation and a new region of interest coding algorithm represents important image areas with high accuracy. Finally, we propose a new framework for diffusion-based image colourisation that we use to build an efficient codec for colour images. Experiments on real world image databases show that our new method is qualitatively competitive to current state-of-the-art codecs.Diese Dissertation ist der Bildkompression mit partiellen Differentialgleichungen (PDEs, partial differential equations) gewidmet.     The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity

    Stripe-Based SPIHT Lossy Compression of Volumetric Medical Images for Low Memory Usage and Uniform Reconstruction Quality

    This paper presents a low memory implementation of efficient lossy volumetric medical image compression using the Set Partitioningin Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) algorithm. The coding units in this three-dimensionalwavelet transform and compression method are short sequences of horizontal stripes cut from the sequence of slices in the volumetric image. As the compression degree increases, the boundaries between adjacent coding units became increasingly visible. Unlike video, where image frames are viewed under dynamic conditions, the volume image is examined under static conditions and must not exhibit such boundary artifacts. In order to eliminate them, we utilize overlappingand averaging both at the intra-slice and inter-slice boundaries between adjacent and successive stripe sequences. Our low memory implementation smooths out considerably the variation in mean squared error among different slices and suffers only an insignificant loss in performance from that of a full memory implementation
