The Many Dimensions of the String Theory Wars
String theory, over its near five decade history, has attracted a great deal of controversy, which continues to evolve to the present day. The string theory controversy has novel aspects which highlight how contemporary science continues to develop. Those novel aspects include: non-empirical scientific methodologies and theory appraisal; a negotiation of the boundary between science and non-science where the dominant group is forced to defend its authority; and a potentially new form of peer review. With the controversy yet to be settled, at stake is how science is understood within high energy physics, acceptable methods for generating theoretical science and the optimal organization of expert communities. There are many points of conflict in the string wars. Rather than a debate between two incompatible and opposing sides, this thesis offers a more complex understanding of the string wars. The picture that is presented is organised into a taxonomy that groups the points of conflict into debates concerning ‘philosophy’, ‘sociology’, ‘technology’ and ‘methodology’. This approach seeks to shift the understanding of the debates from where it currently stands, namely where the string wars are held up as evidence of an emergent conceptualisation of science that is contested by a traditional conception of science, to a more nuanced understanding. Instead of two opposing sides, characterised by a positive and negative appraisal of string theory, a variety of positions can been identified, each concerning a different point of conflict
CONTEXT-BASED AUTOSUGGEST ON GRAPH DATA
Autosuggest is an important feature in any search applications. Currently, most applications only suggest a single term based on how frequent that term appears in the indexed documents or how often it is searched upon. These approaches might not provide the most relevant suggestions because users often enter a series of related query terms to answer a question they have in mind. In this project, we implemented the Smart Solr Suggester plugin using a context-based approach that takes into account the relationships among search keywords. In particular, we used the keywords that the user has chosen so far in the search text box as the context to autosuggest their next incomplete keyword. This context-based approach uses the relationships between entities in the graph data that the user is searching on and therefore would provide more meaningful suggestions

Japanese Modernism And Cine-Text : Fragments And Flows At Empire\u27s Edge In Kitagawa Fuyuhiko And Yokomitsu Riichi
This article notes that Kitagawa Fuyuhiko\u27s writings from the 1920s and 1930s, together with the contemporaneous works of prose author Yokomitsu Riichi, are strongly marked by the confluence of the literary and the cinematic. Kitagawa and Yokomitsu\u27s engagement with film was not limited to a fascination with the precision, objectivity, or mobility of the “camera eye.” Rather, it extended to the entire ability of the cinematic apparatus to capture the temporality of objects in motion, and of the ability of the filmmaker to organize segments of space into a new synthetic whole. The article explores this confluence through a brief examination of four instances of “cine-text”: Kitagawa\u27 poetry collection War, Yokomitsu\u27 novel Shanghai, the concept of literary formalism Yokomitsu proposed around the year 1930, and the theory of the “prose film” that Kitagawa unveiled in the following decade
Automatic Synonym Discovery with Knowledge Bases
Recognizing entity synonyms from text has become a crucial task in many
entity-leveraging applications. However, discovering entity synonyms from
domain-specific text corpora (e.g., news articles, scientific papers) is rather
challenging. Current systems take an entity name string as input to find out
other names that are synonymous, ignoring the fact that often times a name
string can refer to multiple entities (e.g., "apple" could refer to both Apple
Inc and the fruit apple). Moreover, most existing methods require training data
manually created by domain experts to construct supervised-learning systems. In
this paper, we study the problem of automatic synonym discovery with knowledge
bases, that is, identifying synonyms for knowledge base entities in a given
domain-specific corpus. The manually-curated synonyms for each entity stored in
a knowledge base not only form a set of name strings to disambiguate the
meaning for each other, but also can serve as "distant" supervision to help
determine important features for the task. We propose a novel framework, called
DPE, to integrate two kinds of mutually-complementing signals for synonym
discovery, i.e., distributional features based on corpus-level statistics and
textual patterns based on local contexts. In particular, DPE jointly optimizes
the two kinds of signals in conjunction with distant supervision, so that they
can mutually enhance each other in the training stage. At the inference stage,
both signals will be utilized to discover synonyms for the given entities.
Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed framework
The Secret Gauging of Flavor Symmetries in Noncommutative QFT
We show that flavor 't Hooft anomalies automatically vanish in noncommutative
field theories which are obtained from string theory in the decoupling limit.
We claim that this is because the flavor symmetries are secretly local, because
of coupling to closed string bulk modes. An example is the SU(4) R-symmetry of
N=4 D=4 NCSYM. The gauge fields, along with all closed string bulk modes, are
not on-shell external states but do appear as off-shell intermediate states in
non-planar processes; these closed string modes are thereby holographically

Astroinformatics, data mining and the future of astronomical research
Astronomy, as many other scientific disciplines, is facing a true data deluge
which is bound to change both the praxis and the methodology of every day
research work. The emerging field of astroinformatics, while on the one end
appears crucial to face the technological challenges, on the other is opening
new exciting perspectives for new astronomical discoveries through the
implementation of advanced data mining procedures. The complexity of
astronomical data and the variety of scientific problems, however, call for
innovative algorithms and methods as well as for an extreme usage of ICT
