EOSC Synergy WP6: Initial review of systems, initiatives and development of selection criteria of the online learning/training platforms and initiatives
This report describes a review of possible learning platforms and tools, and relevant previous and current projects and initiatives in the area of Open Science and EOSC training and education. What do we mean by "data"? A proposed classification of data types in the arts and humanities
Purpose: This article describes the interviews we conducted in late 2021 with
19 researchers at the Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies at
the University of Bologna. The main purpose was to shed light on the definition
of the word "data" in the humanities domain, as far as FAIR data management
practices are concerned, and on what researchers think of the term.
Methodology: We invited one researcher for each of the official disciplinary
areas represented within the department and all 19 accepted to participate in
the study. Participants were then divided into 5 main research areas: philology
and literary criticism, language and linguistics, history of art, computer
science, archival studies. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using a
grounded theory approach. Findings: A list of 13 research data types has been
compiled thanks to the information collected from participants. The term "data"
does not emerge as especially problematic, contrary to what has been reported
elsewhere. Looking at current research management practices, methodologies and
teamwork appear more central than previously reported. Originality: Our
findings confirm that "data" within the FAIR framework should include all types
of input and outputs humanities research work with, including publications.
Also, the participants to this study appear ready for a discussion around
making their research data FAIR: they do not find the terminology particularly
problematic, while they rely on precise and recognised methodologies, as well
as on sharing and collaboration with colleagues
CLARIN. The infrastructure for language resources
CLARIN, the "Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure", has established itself as a major player in the field of research infrastructures for the humanities. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the organization, its members, its goals and its functioning, as well as of the tools and resources hosted by the infrastructure. The many contributors representing various fields, from computer science to law to psychology, analyse a wide range of topics, such as the technology behind the CLARIN infrastructure, the use of CLARIN resources in diverse research projects, the achievements of selected national CLARIN consortia, and the challenges that CLARIN has faced and will face in the future.
The book will be published in 2022, 10 years after the establishment of CLARIN as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium by the European Commission (Decision 2012/136/EU)

B!SON: A Tool for Open Access Journal Recommendation
Finding a suitable open access journal to publish scientific work is a complex task: Researchers have to navigate a constantly growing number of journals, institutional agreements with publishers, funders’ conditions and the risk of Predatory Publishers. To help with these challenges, we introduce a web-based journal recommendation system called B!SON. It is developed based on a systematic requirements analysis, built on open data, gives publisher-independent recommendations and works across domains. It suggests open access journals based on title, abstract and references provided by the user. The recommendation quality has been evaluated using a large test set of 10,000 articles. Development by two German scientific libraries ensures the longevity of the project
European Language Grid
This open access book provides an in-depth description of the EU project European Language Grid (ELG). Its motivation lies in the fact that Europe is a multilingual society with 24 official European Union Member State languages and dozens of additional languages including regional and minority languages. The only meaningful way to enable multilingualism and to benefit from this rich linguistic heritage is through Language Technologies (LT) including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Natural Language Understanding (NLU), Speech Technologies and language-centric Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. The European Language Grid provides a single umbrella platform for the European LT community, including research and industry, effectively functioning as a virtual home, marketplace, showroom, and deployment centre for all services, tools, resources, products and organisations active in the field. Today the ELG cloud platform already offers access to more than 13,000 language processing tools and language resources. It enables all stakeholders to deposit, upload and deploy their technologies and datasets. The platform also supports the long-term objective of establishing digital language equality in Europe by 2030 – to create a situation in which all European languages enjoy equal technological support. This is the very first book dedicated to Language Technology and NLP platforms. Cloud technology has only recently matured enough to make the development of a platform like ELG feasible on a larger scale. The book comprehensively describes the results of the ELG project. Following an introduction, the content is divided into four main parts: (I) ELG Cloud Platform; (II) ELG Inventory of Technologies and Resources; (III) ELG Community and Initiative; and (IV) ELG Open Calls and Pilot Projects
