    Change blindness: eradication of gestalt strategies

    Arrays of eight, texture-defined rectangles were used as stimuli in a one-shot change blindness (CB) task where there was a 50% chance that one rectangle would change orientation between two successive presentations separated by an interval. CB was eliminated by cueing the target rectangle in the first stimulus, reduced by cueing in the interval and unaffected by cueing in the second presentation. This supports the idea that a representation was formed that persisted through the interval before being 'overwritten' by the second presentation (Landman et al, 2003 Vision Research 43149–164]. Another possibility is that participants used some kind of grouping or Gestalt strategy. To test this we changed the spatial position of the rectangles in the second presentation by shifting them along imaginary spokes (by ±1 degree) emanating from the central fixation point. There was no significant difference seen in performance between this and the standard task [F(1,4)=2.565, p=0.185]. This may suggest two things: (i) Gestalt grouping is not used as a strategy in these tasks, and (ii) it gives further weight to the argument that objects may be stored and retrieved from a pre-attentional store during this task

    Attention and Sensor Planning in Autonomous Robotic Visual Search

    This thesis is concerned with the incorporation of saliency in visual search and the development of sensor planning strategies for visual search. The saliency model is a mixture of two schemes that extracts visual clues regarding the structure of the environment and object specific features. The sensor planning methods, namely Greedy Search with Constraint (GSC), Extended Greedy Search (EGS) and Dynamic Look Ahead Search (DLAS) are approximations to the optimal solution for the problem of object search, as extensions to the work of Yiming Ye. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed methods. They show that by using saliency in search a performance improvement up to 75% is attainable in terms of number of actions taken to complete the search. As for the planning strategies, the GSC algorithm achieved the highest detection rate and the best efficiency in terms of cost it incurs to explore every percentage of an environment

    THE IMAGE TORQUE OPERATOR FOR MID-LEVEL VISION: THEORY AND EXPERIMENT

    A problem central to visual scene understanding and computer vision is to extract semantically meaningful parts of images. A visual scene consists of objects, and the objects and parts of objects are delineated from their surrounding by closed contours. In this thesis a new bottom-up visual operator, called the Torque operator, which captures the concept of closed contours is introduced. Its computation is inspired by the mechanical definition of torque or moment of force, and applied to image edges. It takes as input edges and computes over regions of different size a measure of how well the edges are aligned to form a closed, convex contour. The torque operator is by definition scale independent, and can be seen as an operator of mid-level vision that captures the organizational concept of 'closure' and grouping mechanism of edges. In this thesis, fundamental properties of the torque measure are studied, and experiments are performed to demonstrate and verify that it can be made a useful tool for a variety of applications, including visual attention, segmentation, and boundary edge detection

    Towards key-frame extraction methods for 3D video: a review

    The increasing rate of creation and use of 3D video content leads to a pressing need for methods capable of lowering the cost of 3D video searching, browsing and indexing operations, with improved content selection performance. Video summarisation methods specifically tailored for 3D video content fulfil these requirements. This paper presents a review of the state-of-the-art of a crucial component of 3D video summarisation algorithms: the key-frame extraction methods. The methods reviewed cover 3D video key-frame extraction as well as shot boundary detection methods specific for use in 3D video. The performance metrics used to evaluate the key-frame extraction methods and the summaries derived from those key-frames are presented and discussed. The applications of these methods are also presented and discussed, followed by an exposition about current research challenges on 3D video summarisation methods
