CHORUS Deliverable 3.3: Vision Document - Intermediate version
The goal of the CHORUS vision document is to create a high level vision on audio-visual search engines in order to give guidance to the future R&D work in this area (in line with the mandate of CHORUS as a Coordination Action).
This current intermediate draft of the CHORUS vision document (D3.3) is based on the previous CHORUS vision documents D3.1 to D3.2 and on the results of the six CHORUS Think-Tank meetings held in March, September and November 2007 as well as in April, July and October 2008, and on the feedback from other CHORUS events.
The outcome of the six Think-Thank meetings will not just be to the benefit of the participants which are stakeholders and experts from academia and industry â CHORUS, as a coordination action of the EC, will feed back the findings (see Summary) to the projects under its purview and, via its website, to the whole community working in the domain of AV content search.
A few subjections of this deliverable are to be completed after the eights (and presumably last) Think-Tank meeting in spring 2009

Exploring the relationship between the Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Health and Life Sciences by advanced bibliometric methods
We investigate the extent to which advances in the health and life sciences
(HLS) are dependent on research in the engineering and physical sciences (EPS),
particularly physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering. The analysis
combines two different bibliometric approaches. The first approach to analyze
the 'EPS-HLS interface' is based on term map visualizations of HLS research
fields. We consider 16 clinical fields and five life science fields. On the
basis of expert judgment, EPS research in these fields is studied by
identifying EPS-related terms in the term maps. In the second approach, a
large-scale citation-based network analysis is applied to publications from all
fields of science. We work with about 22,000 clusters of publications, each
representing a topic in the scientific literature. Citation relations are used
to identify topics at the EPS-HLS interface. The two approaches complement each
other. The advantages of working with textual data compensate for the
limitations of working with citation relations and the other way around. An
important advantage of working with textual data is in the in-depth qualitative
insights it provides. Working with citation relations, on the other hand,
yields many relevant quantitative statistics. We find that EPS research
contributes to HLS developments mainly in the following five ways: new
materials and their properties; chemical methods for analysis and molecular
synthesis; imaging of parts of the body as well as of biomaterial surfaces;
medical engineering mainly related to imaging, radiation therapy, signal
processing technology, and other medical instrumentation; mathematical and
statistical methods for data analysis. In our analysis, about 10% of all EPS
and HLS publications are classified as being at the EPS-HLS interface. This
percentage has remained more or less constant during the past decade
STAKEHOLDERâS ROLE IN HEALTHCARE SERVICES AND NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The purpose of this study on âstakeholder role in healthcare servicesâ is to facilitate our understanding of increasingly unpredictable external environments, thereby facilitating our ability to manage within these environments whether as the Marketing or the IT Manager decision roles. There is agreement in the literature concerning the major steps involved in stakeholder analysis:identification of stakeholder groups (e.g., employees, owners, communities, customers); determination of the stakeholders' interests; and evaluation of the type and level of stakeholder power or salience. Managers perceive the stakeholder to posses, thereby is producing seven categories of relative salience according to the number of attributes: urgency, legitimacy and power. The study is based one is a very comprehensive and internationally accepted classification of âstakeholderâ based on Mitchell Theory 1997 with a broad review of five leading general management journals (Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal) and of two journals in the social issues in management field (Business & Society, and Business Ethics Quarterly). Analysis reuse exploiting taxonomical information and belief assignment in industrial problem solving
To take into account the experience feedback on solving complex problems in business is deemed as a way to improve the quality of products and processes. Only a few academic works, however, are concerned with the representation and the instrumentation of experience feedback systems. We propose, in this paper, a model of experiences and mechanisms to use these experiences. More specifically, we wish to encourage the reuse of already performed expert analysis to propose a priori analysis in the solving of a new problem. The proposal is based on a representation in the context of the experience of using a conceptual marker and an explicit representation of the analysis incorporating expert opinions and the fusion of these opinions. The experience feedback models and inference mechanisms are integrated in a commercial support tool for problem solving methodologies. The results obtained to this point have already led to the definition of the role of ââRex Managerââ with principles of sustainable management for continuous improvement of industrial processes in companies
Characterizing Pedophile Conversations on the Internet using Online Grooming
Cyber-crime targeting children such as online pedophile activity are a major
and a growing concern to society. A deep understanding of predatory chat
conversations on the Internet has implications in designing effective solutions
to automatically identify malicious conversations from regular conversations.
We believe that a deeper understanding of the pedophile conversation can result
in more sophisticated and robust surveillance systems than majority of the
current systems relying only on shallow processing such as simple word-counting
or key-word spotting.
In this paper, we study pedophile conversations from the perspective of
online grooming theory and perform a series of linguistic-based empirical
analysis on several pedophile chat conversations to gain useful insights and
patterns. We manually annotated 75 pedophile chat conversations with six stages
of online grooming and test several hypothesis on it. The results of our
experiments reveal that relationship forming is the most dominant online
grooming stage in contrast to the sexual stage. We use a widely used
word-counting program (LIWC) to create psycho-linguistic profiles for each of
the six online grooming stages to discover interesting textual patterns useful
to improve our understanding of the online pedophile phenomenon. Furthermore,
we present empirical results that throw light on various aspects of a pedophile
conversation such as probability of state transitions from one stage to
another, distribution of a pedophile chat conversation across various online
grooming stages and correlations between pre-defined word categories and online
grooming stages
