    Recent Progress in Image Deblurring

    This paper comprehensively reviews the recent development of image deblurring, including non-blind/blind, spatially invariant/variant deblurring techniques. Indeed, these techniques share the same objective of inferring a latent sharp image from one or several corresponding blurry images, while the blind deblurring techniques are also required to derive an accurate blur kernel. Considering the critical role of image restoration in modern imaging systems to provide high-quality images under complex environments such as motion, undesirable lighting conditions, and imperfect system components, image deblurring has attracted growing attention in recent years. From the viewpoint of how to handle the ill-posedness which is a crucial issue in deblurring tasks, existing methods can be grouped into five categories: Bayesian inference framework, variational methods, sparse representation-based methods, homography-based modeling, and region-based methods. In spite of achieving a certain level of development, image deblurring, especially the blind case, is limited in its success by complex application conditions which make the blur kernel hard to obtain and be spatially variant. We provide a holistic understanding and deep insight into image deblurring in this review. An analysis of the empirical evidence for representative methods, practical issues, as well as a discussion of promising future directions are also presented.Comment: 53 pages, 17 figure

    Joint optimization of manifold learning and sparse representations for face and gesture analysis

    Face and gesture understanding algorithms are powerful enablers in intelligent vision systems for surveillance, security, entertainment, and smart spaces. In the future, complex networks of sensors and cameras may disperse directions to lost tourists, perform directory lookups in the office lobby, or contact the proper authorities in case of an emergency. To be effective, these systems will need to embrace human subtleties while interacting with people in their natural conditions. Computer vision and machine learning techniques have recently become adept at solving face and gesture tasks using posed datasets in controlled conditions. However, spontaneous human behavior under unconstrained conditions, or in the wild, is more complex and is subject to considerable variability from one person to the next. Uncontrolled conditions such as lighting, resolution, noise, occlusions, pose, and temporal variations complicate the matter further. This thesis advances the field of face and gesture analysis by introducing a new machine learning framework based upon dimensionality reduction and sparse representations that is shown to be robust in posed as well as natural conditions. Dimensionality reduction methods take complex objects, such as facial images, and attempt to learn lower dimensional representations embedded in the higher dimensional data. These alternate feature spaces are computationally more efficient and often more discriminative. The performance of various dimensionality reduction methods on geometric and appearance based facial attributes are studied leading to robust facial pose and expression recognition models. The parsimonious nature of sparse representations (SR) has successfully been exploited for the development of highly accurate classifiers for various applications. Despite the successes of SR techniques, large dictionaries and high dimensional data can make these classifiers computationally demanding. Further, sparse classifiers are subject to the adverse effects of a phenomenon known as coefficient contamination, where for example variations in pose may affect identity and expression recognition. This thesis analyzes the interaction between dimensionality reduction and sparse representations to present a unified sparse representation classification framework that addresses both issues of computational complexity and coefficient contamination. Semi-supervised dimensionality reduction is shown to mitigate the coefficient contamination problems associated with SR classifiers. The combination of semi-supervised dimensionality reduction with SR systems forms the cornerstone for a new face and gesture framework called Manifold based Sparse Representations (MSR). MSR is shown to deliver state-of-the-art facial understanding capabilities. To demonstrate the applicability of MSR to new domains, MSR is expanded to include temporal dynamics. The joint optimization of dimensionality reduction and SRs for classification purposes is a relatively new field. The combination of both concepts into a single objective function produce a relation that is neither convex, nor directly solvable. This thesis studies this problem to introduce a new jointly optimized framework. This framework, termed LGE-KSVD, utilizes variants of Linear extension of Graph Embedding (LGE) along with modified K-SVD dictionary learning to jointly learn the dimensionality reduction matrix, sparse representation dictionary, sparse coefficients, and sparsity-based classifier. By injecting LGE concepts directly into the K-SVD learning procedure, this research removes the support constraints K-SVD imparts on dictionary element discovery. Results are shown for facial recognition, facial expression recognition, human activity analysis, and with the addition of a concept called active difference signatures, delivers robust gesture recognition from Kinect or similar depth cameras

Veículos inteligentes, por exemplo, frequentemente baseiam suas decisões em observações obtidas a partir de vários sensores tais como LIDAR, GPS e câmeras. Atualmente, sensores de câmera têm recebido grande atenção pelo motivo de que eles são de baixo custo, fáceis de utilizar e fornecem dados com rica informação. Ambientes urbanos representam um interessante mas também desafiador cenário neste contexto, onde o traçado das ruas podem ser muito complexos, a presença de objetos tais como árvores, bicicletas, veículos podem gerar observações parciais e também estas observações são muitas vezes ruidosas ou ainda perdidas devido a completas oclusões. Portanto, o processo de percepção por natureza precisa ser capaz de lidar com a incerteza no conhecimento do mundo em torno do veículo. Nesta tese, este problema de percepção é analisado para a condução nos ambientes urbanos associado com a capacidade de realizar um deslocamento seguro baseado no processo de tomada de decisão em navegação autônoma. Projeta-se um sistema de percepção que permita veículos robóticos a trafegar autonomamente nas ruas, sem a necessidade de adaptar a infraestrutura, sem o conhecimento prévio do ambiente e considerando a presença de objetos dinâmicos tais como veículos. Propõe-se um novo método baseado em aprendizado de máquina para extrair o contexto semântico usando um par de imagens estéreo, a qual é vinculada a uma grade de ocupação evidencial que modela as incertezas de um ambiente urbano desconhecido, aplicando a teoria de Dempster-Shafer. Para a tomada de decisão no planejamento do caminho, aplica-se a abordagem dos tentáculos virtuais para gerar possíveis caminhos a partir do centro de referencia do veículo e com base nisto, duas novas estratégias são propostas. Em primeiro, uma nova estratégia para escolher o caminho correto para melhor evitar obstáculos e seguir a tarefa local no contexto da navegação hibrida e, em segundo, um novo controle de malha fechada baseado na odometria visual e o tentáculo virtual é modelado para execução do seguimento de caminho. Finalmente, um completo sistema automotivo integrando os modelos de percepção, planejamento e controle são implementados e validados experimentalmente em condições reais usando um veículo autônomo experimental, onde os resultados mostram que a abordagem desenvolvida realiza com sucesso uma segura navegação local com base em sensores de câmeraAbstract: The development of autonomous vehicles capable of getting around on urban roads can provide important benefits in reducing accidents, in increasing life comfort and also in providing cost savings. Intelligent vehicles for example often base their decisions on observations obtained from various sensors such as LIDAR, GPS and Cameras. Actually, camera sensors have been receiving large attention due to they are cheap, easy to employ and provide rich data information. Inner-city environments represent an interesting but also very challenging scenario in this context, where the road layout may be very complex, the presence of objects such as trees, bicycles, cars might generate partial observations and also these observations are often noisy or even missing due to heavy occlusions. Thus, perception process by nature needs to be able to deal with uncertainties in the knowledge of the world around the car. While highway navigation and autonomous driving using a prior knowledge of the environment have been demonstrating successfully, understanding and navigating general inner-city scenarios with little prior knowledge remains an unsolved problem. In this thesis, this perception problem is analyzed for driving in the inner-city environments associated with the capacity to perform a safe displacement based on decision-making process in autonomous navigation. It is designed a perception system that allows robotic-cars to drive autonomously on roads, without the need to adapt the infrastructure, without requiring previous knowledge of the environment and considering the presence of dynamic objects such as cars. It is proposed a novel method based on machine learning to extract the semantic context using a pair of stereo images, which is merged in an evidential grid to model the uncertainties of an unknown urban environment, applying the Dempster-Shafer theory. To make decisions in path-planning, it is applied the virtual tentacle approach to generate possible paths starting from ego-referenced car and based on it, two news strategies are proposed. First one, a new strategy to select the correct path to better avoid obstacles and to follow the local task in the context of hybrid navigation, and second, a new closed loop control based on visual odometry and virtual tentacle is modeled to path-following execution.     Development Of A High Performance Mosaicing And Super-Resolution Algorithm

    In this dissertation, a high-performance mosaicing and super-resolution algorithm is described. The scale invariant feature transform (SIFT)-based mosaicing algorithm builds an initial mosaic which is iteratively updated by the robust super resolution algorithm to achieve the final high-resolution mosaic. Two different types of datasets are used for testing: high altitude balloon data and unmanned aerial vehicle data. To evaluate our algorithm, five performance metrics are employed: mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio, singular value decomposition, slope of reciprocal singular value curve, and cumulative probability of blur detection. Extensive testing shows that the proposed algorithm is effective in improving the captured aerial data and the performance metrics are accurate in quantifying the evaluation of the algorithm

    3D exemplar-based image inpainting in electron microscopy

    In electron microscopy (EM) a common problem is the non-availability of data, which causes artefacts in reconstructions. In this thesis the goal is to generate artificial data where missing in EM by using exemplar-based inpainting (EBI). We implement an accelerated 3D version tailored to applications in EM, which reduces reconstruction times from days to minutes. We develop intelligent sampling strategies to find optimal data as input for reconstruction methods. Further, we investigate approaches to reduce electron dose and acquisition time. Sparse sampling followed by inpainting is the most promising approach. As common evaluation measures may lead to misinterpretation of results in EM and falsify a subsequent analysis, we propose to use application driven metrics and demonstrate this in a segmentation task. A further application of our technique is the artificial generation of projections in tiltbased EM. EBI is used to generate missing projections, such that the full angular range is covered. Subsequent reconstructions are significantly enhanced in terms of resolution, which facilitates further analysis of samples. In conclusion, EBI proves promising when used as an additional data generation step to tackle the non-availability of data in EM, which is evaluated in selected applications. Enhancing adaptive sampling methods and refining EBI, especially considering the mutual influence, promotes higher throughput in EM using less electron dose while not lessening quality.Ein häufig vorkommendes Problem in der Elektronenmikroskopie (EM) ist die Nichtverfügbarkeit von Daten, was zu Artefakten in Rekonstruktionen führt. In dieser Arbeit ist es das Ziel fehlende Daten in der EM künstlich zu erzeugen, was durch Exemplar-basiertes Inpainting (EBI) realisiert wird. Wir implementieren eine auf EM zugeschnittene beschleunigte 3D Version, welche es ermöglicht, Rekonstruktionszeiten von Tagen auf Minuten zu reduzieren. Wir entwickeln intelligente Abtaststrategien, um optimale Datenpunkte für die Rekonstruktion zu erhalten. Ansätze zur Reduzierung von Elektronendosis und Aufnahmezeit werden untersucht. Unterabtastung gefolgt von Inpainting führt zu den besten Resultaten. Evaluationsmaße zur Beurteilung der Rekonstruktionsqualität helfen in der EM oft nicht und können zu falschen Schlüssen führen, weswegen anwendungsbasierte Metriken die bessere Wahl darstellen. Dies demonstrieren wir anhand eines Beispiels. Die künstliche Erzeugung von Projektionen in der neigungsbasierten Elektronentomographie ist eine weitere Anwendung. EBI wird verwendet um fehlende Projektionen zu generieren. Daraus resultierende Rekonstruktionen weisen eine deutlich erhöhte Auflösung auf. EBI ist ein vielversprechender Ansatz, um nicht verfügbare Daten in der EM zu generieren. Dies wird auf Basis verschiedener Anwendungen gezeigt und evaluiert. Adaptive Aufnahmestrategien und EBI können also zu einem höheren Durchsatz in der EM führen, ohne die Bildqualität merklich zu verschlechtern

    Stereo-based Pedestrian Detection and Path Prediction

    In den letzten Jahren gab es eine rasante Entwicklung von Fahrerassistenzsystemen (Englisch: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems oder kurz ADAS). Diese Systeme unterstützen nicht nur den Fahrer, sondern erhöhen durch das automatische Einleiten von Sicherheitreaktionen des Fahrzeuges selber auch die Sicherheit aller anderen Verkehrsteilnehmer. Zukünftige aktive Fußgängerschutzsystem in Intelligentem Fahrzeugen müssen nun noch einen Schritt weiter gehen und lernen, ein genaues Bild ihrer Umgebung und der darin während der Fahrt zu erwartenden Änderungen zu entwickeln. Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Verbesserung bildgestützter Fußgängerschutzsysteme. Es werden darin neue Methoden der Bildhypothesengenerierung (englisch: region of interest (ROI) generation), Fußgängerklassifikation, Pfadvorhersage und Absichstserkennung entwickelt. Die Leistung der Fußgängererkennung in realen, dynamischen Umgebungen mittels einer bewegten Kamera wird durch die Verwendung von dichtem Stereo in den unterschiedlichen Modulen verbessert. In einer Experimentalstudie wurde die Effizienz eines Systems zur monokularen Fußgängererkennung mit einem System verglichen, dass erweitert wurde um dichtes Stereo für die Hypothesengenerierung und der Fußgängerverfolgung (englisch: tracking) zu nutzen. Das neue System erwies sich hierin als deutlich effizienter als das monokulare System. Diese Leistungssteigerung gab Anlass für eine erweiterte Nutzung von dichtem Stereo bei der Fußgängererkennung. Die Hypothesengenerierung wurde durch die dynamische Schätzung der Kameraorientierung und des Straßenprofils weiter verbessert. Insbesondere bei hügeligen Straßen steigerte sich die Erkennungsleistung durch die Optimierung des Suchbereichs. Zusätzlich konnte die Klassifikationsleistung durch die Fusion von unterschiedlichen Merkmalen aus Bild und Tiefeninformation verbessert werden. Aufbauend auf den Erfolgen bei der Fußgängererkennung wird in der Arbeit ein System für den Aktiven Fußgängerschutz vorgestellt, welches die Funktionen Fußgängererkennung, Situationsanalyse und Fahrzeugsteuerung kombiniert. Für die Fußgängerkennung wurden Ergebnisse eines Verfahrens zur bewegungsbasierten Objekterkennung mit Ergebnissen eines Fußgängerklassifikators fusioniert. Das System wurde in einen Versuchsträger eingebaut und half dabei, Unfälle durch einen aktiven Lenkeingriff oder ein Notbremsemanöver zu vermeiden. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Problem der Pfadvorhersage und dem Erkennen der Fußgängerabsicht in Situationen, in denen sich der Fußgänger nicht mit einer konstanten Geschwindigkeit bewegt. Zwei neue, lernbasierte Ansätze werden vorgestellt und mit aktuellen Verfahren verglichen. Durch die Verwendung von Merkmalen, die aus dichtem optischem Fluss generiert werden, ist es möglich den Pfad und die Absicht einer Fußgängers vorherzusagen. Das erste Verfahren lernt eine niedrigdimensionale Mannigfaltigkeit der Merkmale, die eine Vorhersage von Merkmale, Pfad und Absicht erlaubt. Das zweite Verfahren verwendet einen Suchbaum in dem Trajektorien abgelegt sind die mit Bewegungsmerkmalen erweitert wurden. Ein probabilistischer Suchalgorithmus ermöglicht die Vorhersage des Fußgängerpfads und Absicht. Die Leistungsfähigkeit der Systeme wurde zusätzlich mit der Leistung von menschlichen Probanden verglichen. In dieser Arbeit wurde großer Wert auf die ausführliche Analyse der vorgestellten Verfahren und die Verwendung von realistischen Testdatensätzen gelegt. Die Experimente zeigen das die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Systems zur Fußgängererkennung durch die Verwendung von dichtem Stereo verbessert werden kann. Die Vorgestellten Verfahren zur Pfadvorhersage und Absichtserkennung ermöglichen ein frühzeitiges erkenne der Fußgängerabsicht. Die Zuverlässigkeit zukünftiger System für den Aktiven Fußgängerschutz, die durch Aktiven Lenkeingriff oder Notbremsemanöver Unfälle vermeiden, kann mit den vorgestellten Verfahren verbessert werden. Dadurch können Unfälle vollständig verhindert oder die Schwere einer Kollision reduziert werden
