    Routing efficiency in wireless sensor-actor networks considering semi-automated architecture

    Wireless networks have become increasingly popular and advances in wireless communications and electronics have enabled the development of different kind of networks such as Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Wireless Sensor-Actor Networks (WSANs). These networks have different kind of characteristics, therefore new protocols that fit their features should be developed. We have developed a simulation system to test MANETs, WSNs and WSANs. In this paper, we consider the performance behavior of two protocols: AODV and DSR using TwoRayGround model and Shadowing model for lattice and random topologies. We study the routing efficiency and compare the performance of two protocols for different scenarios. By computer simulations, we found that for large number of nodes when we used TwoRayGround model and random topology, the DSR protocol has a better performance.     Distributed Optimal Rate-Reliability-Lifetime Tradeoff in Wireless Sensor Networks

    The transmission rate, delivery reliability and network lifetime are three fundamental but conflicting design objectives in energy-constrained wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we address the optimal rate-reliability-lifetime tradeoff with link capacity constraint, reliability constraint and energy constraint. By introducing the weight parameters, we combine the objectives at rate, reliability, and lifetime into a single objective to characterize the tradeoff among them. However, the optimization formulation of the rate-reliability-reliability tradeoff is neither separable nor convex. Through a series of transformations, a separable and convex problem is derived, and an efficient distributed Subgradient Dual Decomposition algorithm (SDD) is proposed. Numerical examples confirm its convergence. Also, numerical examples investigate the impact of weight parameters on the rate utility, reliability utility and network lifetime, which provide a guidance to properly set the value of weight parameters for a desired performance of WSNs according to the realistic application's requirements.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure

    Feedback Control Goes Wireless: Guaranteed Stability over Low-power Multi-hop Networks

    Closing feedback loops fast and over long distances is key to emerging applications; for example, robot motion control and swarm coordination require update intervals of tens of milliseconds. Low-power wireless technology is preferred for its low cost, small form factor, and flexibility, especially if the devices support multi-hop communication. So far, however, feedback control over wireless multi-hop networks has only been shown for update intervals on the order of seconds. This paper presents a wireless embedded system that tames imperfections impairing control performance (e.g., jitter and message loss), and a control design that exploits the essential properties of this system to provably guarantee closed-loop stability for physical processes with linear time-invariant dynamics.     Energy-Delay Tradeoff and Dynamic Sleep Switching for Bluetooth-Like Body-Area Sensor Networks

    Wireless technology enables novel approaches to healthcare, in particular the remote monitoring of vital signs and other parameters indicative of people's health. This paper considers a system scenario relevant to such applications, where a smart-phone acts as a data-collecting hub, gathering data from a number of wireless-capable body sensors, and relaying them to a healthcare provider host through standard existing cellular networks. Delay of critical data and sensors' energy efficiency are both relevant and conflicting issues. Therefore, it is important to operate the wireless body-area sensor network at some desired point close to the optimal energy-delay tradeoff curve. This tradeoff curve is a function of the employed physical-layer protocol: in particular, it depends on the multiple-access scheme and on the coding and modulation schemes available. In this work, we consider a protocol closely inspired by the widely-used Bluetooth standard. First, we consider the calculation of the minimum energy function, i.e., the minimum sum energy per symbol that guarantees the stability of all transmission queues in the network. Then, we apply the general theory developed by Neely to develop a dynamic scheduling policy that approaches the optimal energy-delay tradeoff for the network at hand. Finally, we examine the queue dynamics and propose a novel policy that adaptively switches between connected and disconnected (sleeping) modes. We demonstrate that the proposed policy can achieve significant gains in the realistic case where the control "NULL" packets necessary to maintain the connection alive, have a non-zero energy cost, and the data arrival statistics corresponding to the sensed physical process are bursty.Comment: Extended version (with proofs details in the Appendix) of a paper accepted for publication on the IEEE Transactions on Communication

DOI: 10.1109/MCOM.2016.7509394CoAP is a lightweight RESTful application layer protocol devised for the IoT. Operating on top of UDP, CoAP must handle congestion control by itself. The core CoAP specification defines a basic congestion control mechanism, but it is not capable of adapting to network conditions. However, IoT scenarios exhibit significant resource constraints, which pose new challenges on the design of congestion control mechanisms. In this article we present CoCoA, an advanced congestion control mechanism for CoAP being standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force CoRE working group. CoCoA introduces a novel round-trip time estimation technique, together with a variable backoff factor and aging mechanisms in order to provide dynamic and controlled retransmission timeout adaptation suitable for the peculiarities of IoT communications. We conduct a comparative performance analysis of CoCoA and a variety of alternative algorithms including state-of-the-art mechanisms developed for TCP. The study is based on experiments carried out in real testbeds. Results show that, in contrast to the alternative methods considered, CoCoA consistently outperforms the default CoAP congestion control mechanism in all evaluated scenarios.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Analyzing the Impact of Wireless Multi-Hop Networking On Vehicular Safety

    One of the core challenges of Intelligent Transportation System is the dissemination of timely and accurate vehicle information (e.g. speed, position) to geographically large distances without compromising data supply rates from immediate neighbors. This feature is critical for the design of vehicle safety and navigation applications. Single hop broadcasting is often inadequate to ensure vehicle safety when the platoon size is arbitrarily large due to its upper bound on rate and range of wireless message transmission. Existing wireless multi-hop protocols do not ensure reliable message delivery while avoiding network congestion in the shared channel. In this thesis, we make two separate but related investigations to address this challenge - (1) Analyze the impact of distance sensitive multi-hop broadcasting in realistic traffic network (2) Analyze the impact of wireless multi-hop network in vehicle safety. For investigating the first part, we used VCAST, a distance sensitive information propagation technique, in which information is forwarded at a rate that decreases linearly with distance from the source. VCAST is evaluated by using extensive simulations in ns-3, a discrete event simulator for wireless and mobile ad-hoc networks, under different density, source broadcast rates and communication range. To simulate realistic traffic movement, we used 2d grids of different sizes and used both uniform and non-uniform mobility. The results show that VCAST is scalable for - large number of vehicles and large source broadcast rates. It is further shown that successful scaling is achieved by reduced number of vehicle records transmitted per second per vehicle for varying network sizes and varying source broadcast rates. Vehicle safety messages for VCAST are piggy backed on heart beat messages and does not require any modifications to the existing vehicular communication standards. For investigating the second part, we implemented a realistic car following model and used string stability analysis as a metric for measuring vehicle safety. The basic idea is to exploit the small network propagation time in disseminating safety messages over large distances, instead of relying on just the predecessor vehicle\u27s state. This enables distant vehicles in a traffic stream to plan well in advance against rear end collisions which could lead to string instability. We also proposed one such proactive method of planning - and that is by controlling the headway time. Through extensive simulations, we obtained results for vehicle safety when some incident is detected abruptly on its course. The results show that proactive planning using multi-hop network makes the entire platoon string stable in the presence of emergency road incidents
