    DC bus stabilization using passive damping network in distributed power system with constant power load

    In distributed power system (DPS), the stability performance is always associated with the behaviour of constant power load (CPL). Since DPS large complex system build up from many power electronic converters, the DC bus of the system becomes unstable due to the strenuous action from power converters. When these converters tightly regulated, it behaves as constant power load and exhibit negative incremental input impedance which becomes the main reason in stability degradation of DPS. In this paper, four passive damping network topologies was proposed to reduce the DC bus instability. The best damping performance of the topologies was chosen and analysed using MATLAB/Simulink. The DC bus performances was studied in four cases which are damping behavior due to CPL power level, CPL disconnection, effects of filter and damping capacitor, and effects of filter cut-off frequency. Simulation results obtained shows that the DC bus was successfully stabilized and the resonance damped when passive damper installed. An experimental hardware tests was conducted to verify the proposed damping method and the results were compared with the simulated output waveforms. The analysis results in overshoot, settling time and steady state error of bus voltage shows system improvement with the proposed damper network

    H∞ based control of a DC/DC buck converter feeding a constant power load in uncertain DC microgrid system

    DC microgrids are gaining more and more popularity and are becoming a more viable alternative to AC microgrids (MGs) due to their advantages in terms of simpler power converter stages, flexible control algorithms and the absence of synchronization and reactive power. However, DC-MGs are prone to instability issues associated with the presence of nonlinear loads such as constant power loads (CPL) known by their incremental negative impedance (INI), which may lead to voltage collapse of the main DC Bus. In this paper, -based controller of a source side buck converter is designed to avoid the instability issues caused by the load-side converter acting as a CPL. Besides, the proposed controller allows a perfect rejection of all perturbations that may arise from parameter variations, input voltage and CPL current fluctuations. The design process of H-based controller is based on the Golver Doyle Optimization Algorithm (GDOA), which requires an augmented system extracted from the small-signal model of the DC/DC converter including the mathematical model of parameter variations and overall external perturbations. The​ based controller involves the use of weight functions in order to get the desired performances. The proposed controller is easy to implement and lead to reducing the implementation cost and avoid the use of current measurement that may have some disadvantages. The derived controller is validated by simulation performed in Psim software and experimental setup

    Combined voltage oriented control and direct power control based on backstepping control for four-leg PWM rectifier under unbalanced conditions

    The present paper proposes a combined voltage-oriented control and direct power control (VOC-DPC) method associated with the backstepping control technique for a three-phase four-wire grid-connected four-leg rectifier in the synchronous rotating frame without using phase locked loop (PLL) and Parks transformation under balanced and unbalanced load and grid conditions. This control method is proposed in order to remove the drawbacks of the conventional VOC based on the PLL technique .The proposed control method is able to enhance the control performance and dynamic responses of the system when considering slow dynamics and instability issues of the PLL in several cases and can decrease the computational burden due to the absence of PLL and Park transformation. In addition, the performance of the proposed VOC-DPC method is enhanced by using backstepping control (BSC) based on Lyabonov theory for both the input currents and DC-bus voltage loops. As a consequence, constant DC-bus voltage, unit power factor, sinusoidal input currents, and neutral current minimization can be accurately carried out under both DC-bus voltage and load variations. Furthermore, robustness against filter inductance variations can also be achieved. The effectiveness, superiority, and performance of the proposed control method for a four-leg rectifier based on BSC in the dq0-frame are validated by several processor-in-the-loop (PIL) co-simulation tests sing the STM32F407 discovery development board

    A Comprehensive Review on Constant Power Loads Compensation Techniques

    Microgrid, because of its advantages over conventional utility grids, is a prudent approach to implement renewable resource-based electricity generation. Despite its advantages, microgrid has to operate with a significant proportion of constant power loads that exhibit negative incremental impedance and thus cause serious instability in the system. In this paper, a comprehensive review is presented on accomplished research work on stabilization of dc and ac microgrid. After reviewing these, microgrid system stabilization techniques are classified with required discussions. As found out in this paper, the stabilization techniques can basically be classified as compensation done: 1) at feeder side; 2) by adding intermediate circuitry; and 3) at load side. Finally, after analyzing the merits and drawbacks of each generalized technique, several infographics are presented to highlight the key findings of this paper

    A broadband FFT spectrometer for radio and millimeter astronomy

    The core architecture, tests in the lab and first results of a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrometer are described. It is based on a commercially available fast digital sampler (AC240) with an on-board Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The spectrometer works continuously and has a remarkable total bandwidth of 1 GHz, resolved into 16384 channels. The data is sampled with 8 bits, yielding a dynamic range of 48 dB. An Allan time of more than 2000 s and an SFDR of 37 dB were measured.     Design and Implementation of Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Tracking Control for a DC-DC Buck Converter

    This paper presents the design and implementation of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller for a DC-DC buck converter using Arduino board. The proposed fuzzy controller is able to pilot the states of the buck converter to track a reference model. The T-S fuzzy model is employed, firstly, to represent exactly the dynamics of the nonlinear buck converter system, and then the considered controller is designed on the basis of a concept called Virtual Desired Variables (VDVs). In this case, a two-stage design procedure is developed: i) determine the reference model according to the desired output voltage, ii) determine the fuzzy controller gains by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). A digital implementation of the proposed T-S fuzzy controller is carried out using the ATmega328P-based Microcontroller of the Arduino Uno board. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme
